On Sunday we saw ourselves as the corrupted, hypocritical judges of Jesus; on Friday we will see ourselves as the cruel, selfish mockers of Jesus. As Jesus hung in agony on the cross, all sorts of people heaped insult on him, showing hatred, contempt and a complete lack of empathy. And while we might be more subtle with our emotions and actions, we are, deep down, no better. Our selfishness, in similar circumstances, would result in the same scoffing and scorn. And our sin heaped on him as much as any insult. But Jesus bears it willingly, reversing the shame back onto his mockers and then making a way for shame to disappear completely.
