Raid on Camp Bastian

September 14, 2012 Taliban forces in the Helmund province orchestrated a raid British base, but in during the surge, the US began sending Marines to the base along with Harrier Jets and logistical support. The base grew to a city sized compound of over 30,000 British and American Soldiers.
The attack on the base resulted in the death of two marines, eight Harrier Jets, one C130 airplane, and a refueling center.
“Worst loss of US Airpower since the Vietnam war.”
What really stands out is how the raid was conducted. See, they didn’t come through the front gate guns blazing.
15 Taliban soldiers dressed un stolen US Military uniforms breached the perimeter and attacked the men and equipment from within.
Not only was there a heavy price paid when the raid occured. (Hundreds of millions of dollars in equipment, and the loss of two Marines)
But the psychological damage to all the soldiers in the region that they were never safe, they could never let their guard down. Always on alert. Causes fatigue.

Jude

One chapter and only 25 verses.
They urgent theme of the letter is that we are being infiltrated and attacked from within. From inside the wire.
Church response to attacks from outside the Church.
Security teams
Elaborate camera systems.
Hire off duty officers
Train staff and parishioners on active shooter drills.
But the question is, what are we doing to protect the church from the spiritual attacks that come from within?
Jude addresses this problem and directs us how to handle this situation.
Jude 1 NASB95
1 Jude, a bond-servant of Jesus Christ, and brother of James, To those who are the called, beloved in God the Father, and kept for Jesus Christ:
Jude was written in the first Century
Most scholars agree that the author was Judas the brother of James and half brother of Jesus.
Judas was a common name. Jesus had two apostles named Judas. James brother, the author of this letter was named Judas.
So why was is shortened to Jude?
Most likely, the same reason none of us have children named Adolph.
Jude 3 NASB95
3 Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you appealing that you contend earnestly for the faith which was once for all handed down to the saints.
Contend : The greek word Jude uses carries the idea of an agonizing struggle.
Contending for the faith will be hard, costly, unpopular, it will be agonizing.
He wrote this knowing that there would be days when you wake up and want to throw you hands up and say, I’m tired. I’m just done, and can’t go any further.
Here is our Gospel.
You are a sinner
Because of your sin, you are eternally separated from God.
The only way to be reconciled to God is through the forgiveness of you sin through Jesus.
To accept Jesus is to repent of your sins and accept Him as your Lord, obeying all that He teaches and commands.
about Love
about obedience
about sex
about marriage
about money
about lying
about gossip.
You can’t pick and choose what you believe about Christ. Christianity is not a buffet where you can take the things you like and leave the things you don’t.
That is not a popular message and you will be called a biggot, intollerant. You will be hated.
John 15:18 NASB95
18 “If the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you.

The Problem

Jude 4 NASB95
4 For certain persons have crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn the grace of our God into licentiousness and deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.
licentiousness - License to sin. Sensuality. What feels good.
Deny out only Master.
Two choices: follow self or follow Christ.
Luke 14:26 NASB95
26 “If anyone comes to Me, and does not hate his own father and mother and wife and children and brothers and sisters, yes, and even his own life, he cannot be My disciple.
Not literal hate, but giving up as first priority.
Matthew 16:24 NASB95
24 Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
There are people in the Church that have chosen self.

Freedom of choice, not freedom from consequences

Egypt during the time of Moses.
Suffered the plagues.
Destroyed in the Red Sea.
Angels who did not keep their own domain.
Possibly a reference to Genesis 6.
Abandoned God
Kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment.
Sodam and Gamorrah
gross immorality, strange flesh
Destroyed by eternal fire.
Jude 8 NASB95
8 Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, defile the flesh, and reject authority, and revile angelic majesties.
Lust - Sodam and Gamorah
Rebelliousness - Angels
Irreverence - Egyptians.

False beliefs in the church

Overemphasis of prosperity
Exaggerated view of Grace
Antinomianism
Deification of Man
Challenging the authority of the Word
Jude compares these people:
Unreasoning animals
hidden reefs
clouds without water
trees witout fruit
Jude 16 NASB95
16 These are grumblers, finding fault, following after their own lusts; they speak arrogantly, flattering people for the sake of gaining an advantage.
