Story commentary, - He knew the kind of death he was going to die
Extreme weakness calls for desperate prayer
see the contrast. Jesus strength in answering critics, defending against accusations
Healing, casting out demons
Contrast with praying face down, begging god, sweating blood Around the sweat glands, there are multiple blood vessels in a net-like form, which constrict under the pressure of great stress (knew the kind of death, stress affects the body)
Jesus an example of desperate prayer
scheduling worship leaders, preachers
Lenten series planning
I Selected this passage because of upcoming hospital .
About Fear, uncertainty, spiritual struggle, vulnerability; for me-story of desperate prayer
Invitation introduction we face desperate situations, we need desperate prayers
We know desperation. (loss a job, medical bills piling, marriage crumbling, raising teen,, no crisis? Look around you. community crisis- not just personal (don’t forget community crisis - deep division; homelessness, addiction; disconnect between church and )
When we get desperate: no optimism, hope, answers, fear of tomorrow, powerless
. Worst part is the god struggle. Doubt, anger, confusion, abandoned, punishment?
Jesus' knew desperation, prayed a desperate prayer; and we need that
(Pray)
Summary - Reasons why Desperate prayer are ineffective
1) Doing it Alone, 2) Physical Barriers 3) lack a foundation, 4) lack a good ending
1,Don't do it alone - stay here, watch and pray (the most important part for me)
Facebook (personal history) AND gather people
physically in person.- disciples with him
Too weak for sustained prayer. Easy to give up
More than a list, something mentioned in church. Someone to dedicated time, knows
Alone (bed, relationship, job resume, bills; suffering in silence)- A TERRIBLE FEELING
I thing that could grow out of this: A prayer ministry??? Intentionally gathering
2. Barriers: Can you not stay awake for an hour? spirit is willing, flesh is weak
(this is for the prayer partner) They were sleeping - choose prayer partner wisely
Presbyterian service, fatigue desperation makes us sick (sweating blood);
Choose those that know you; disciplined; love God, passionate about God; IN PERSON
Our world: conflict comes more natural than praying for one another
3. Lack a good Foundation - Father
Father - respect and intimacy (hard for those w/o a father;
Not about what we do, but what God has done for us out of love
The crucifixion is coming;
suffering and death is coming - see more than that; see love, value
Is that a reality for you?
Hard during spiritual suffering (example?)
Not knowing how or if the crisis will end (image help? dark path, Jesus walking with me)
4. Wrong Ending - “Thy will be done”
Ask boldly, specifically; gather people do to the same,
Not my will but thine is not a “okay, just thought I would ask),
Not just a granted request - trusting God is working through your crisis
Bed, $, relationship - God will teach me something; God will teach someone else?
Closing
1) Gather prayer warriors, don’t do it Alone, 2) Know your Physical Barriers 3) God loves you - you are valuable to God; 4) Have a good ending: God is control
