Joshua- The Lord Saves

In Greek is name is Translated to Jesus
To recap: First thing we need to realize is that Joshua is taking over for Moses, Moses died outside of the promised land because he let his emotions get the best of him. One of the biggest things I learned in the space between Moses and Joshua is this: God’s plan is stead fast and true-Our calling is determined by our obedience and love of God. God can and will use anyone. We see this between Saul and David.
We see this in the new Testament Between Judas and Matthias. Our ability to follow God in our life will determine the length of stay and the amount of success we have in this present kingdom of God.
God celebrates and rewards Godly obedience, but he also punishes unrepentant disobedience. Moses had an undealt with anger issue. The first time he was annoyed with Israel he dropped the tablets. Then he struck a rock instead of speaking to it and that undealt with sin kept him from taking Israel into the promised land.
Saul’s bloodline was supposed to continue to be King-until Saul had unrepentant sin in his life.
Judas had time to deal with his battle of disbelief, until his sin relieved him of his position.
God’s plan will unfold itself. Revelation will happen. But who has what part in the outcome derives from our obedience to God.
Now Joshua is an amazing recall in the conquests of Israel.
Ch 1-12 describes the historical process by which the promised land was given (May give insight into how the Millennial Reign Kingdom is divided up.)
Ch13-21 describes the assignment of that land.
Ch22-24 Deal with the covenant faithfulness/obedience in the land
There is a lot of bloodshed in the book of Joshua Just as in the book of Revelation. You have to remember God’s sole purpose was keeping Israel free from sin and idol worship. Just as we are to severe all ties with sin when we receive Jesus he expected Israel too as well.
There is a direct link between God prospering Israel financially, locationally, and Spiritually and obedience. I think this is one of the biggest underlying themes of Joshua. Just as it was with Jesus.
F. B. Meyer connects the Book of Joshua with the Book of Ephesians. Both describe a spiritual walk of promise, and victory that are ours with Jesus.
Joshua wasn’t young when God put him into his position. However, because he grew up and was Moses’ military leader he was the perfect candidate for the battle ahead.
One of the biggest successors in Joshua was
Exodus 33:11 ESV
Thus the Lord used to speak to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. When Moses turned again into the camp, his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, would not depart from the tent.
Joshua was a man not only of obedience but of depth of relationship. He knew God because he spent time with God. Joshua was also 1 of twelve spies that origionally scouted the land of Canaan. Joshua and Caleb were the only ones who had faith over sight.
By the time Joshua had taken command he was already said to be
Numbers 27:18 ESV
So the Lord said to Moses, “Take Joshua the son of Nun, a man in whom is the Spirit, and lay your hand on him.
Joshua is the main OT book that describes the concepts of a “Holy War”
The book will emphasis 3 truth of God: Faithfulness, Holiness, and Salvation
Ch1 -The change in command
Joshua 1:1–2 ESV
After the death of Moses the servant of the Lord, the Lord said to Joshua the son of Nun, Moses’ assistant, “Moses my servant is dead. Now therefore arise, go over this Jordan, you and all this people, into the land that I am giving to them, to the people of Israel.
Now this would seem like a daunting task, but Joshua was preparing his whole life for this. He was with Moses since he was young. He followed a good leader and now it is time for him to be a good leader.
Ephesians 1:3 ESV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,
Here is the good news. You currently have every spiritual blessing you could need to do as God had commanded you. You have more blessings in your life than you know what to do with. BUT they must be seized.
Paul gave Timothy this charge
1 Timothy 1:18–20 ESV
This charge I entrust to you, Timothy, my child, in accordance with the prophecies previously made about you, that by them you may wage the good warfare, holding faith and a good conscience. By rejecting this, some have made shipwreck of their faith, among whom are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan that they may learn not to blaspheme.
How do you make good warfare-Holding the faith and have a good conscience- in other words obedience. An understanding that if God asks us to do something there may be a reason we don’t understand.
Tell housing story with financing.
He was given marching orders. Then as a Good god does he gave him confidence.
Joshua 1:3–5 ESV
Every place that the sole of your foot will tread upon I have given to you, just as I promised to Moses. From the wilderness and this Lebanon as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, all the land of the Hittites to the Great Sea toward the going down of the sun shall be your territory. No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
One of the first things God does is remind Joshua that this is a gift. It isn’t deserved, but rather gifted to them. All to often major slip ups in our faith happen when we confuse a gift with a right.
He lays out boundaries as all good gifts come with boundaries. boundaries and knowing your boundaries are essential. Growing up I wasn’t taught bounderies and I traveled onto many dangerous areas. When you know where not to go you have better freedom to enjoy that which was given to you.
and then God’s foundational promise and our foundational promise:
I will be with you
Joshua 1:5 ESV
No man shall be able to stand before you all the days of your life. Just as I was with Moses, so I will be with you. I will not leave you or forsake you.
God gave this promise to Jacob
Genesis 28:15 ESV
Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
Moses Repeared this promise to Joshua in Deut. 31:1-8
God will again give this promise to Gideon
Judges 6:16 ESV
And the Lord said to him, “But I will be with you, and you shall strike the Midianites as one man.”
God gave this promise to the JEwish people leaving Babylon where they were captives
Isaiah 41:10 ESV
fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
David passed it on to Solomon
1 Chronicles 28:20 ESV
Then David said to Solomon his son, “Be strong and courageous and do it. Do not be afraid and do not be dismayed, for the Lord God, even my God, is with you. He will not leave you or forsake you, until all the work for the service of the house of the Lord is finished.
But God gives us this promise:
Matthew 28:20 ESV
teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Romans 8:31 ESV
What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?
Understand your war physical, emotional, and spiritual is won. It just has to be claimed and lived out in the boundaries of the Word of God
