What do I want them to know? How they receive the HS, who the HS is, what are some of the things the HS does, and how to be filled with more of the HS
Why? HS is our parclett
What do I want them to do? Be filled with the HS
Why? To have more of God and goodness of God in them
We are going to be in the book of Acts which covers 30 years of the early church 33AD-63AD....It is a book that some people will call the Acts of Holy Spirit because you see 30 Acts of Holy Spirit in the book of Acts.
ME
My first job out of college as a youth pastor came with a HUGE BLESSING, A HUGE bonus that I did not expect, a BLESSING that you do not always get when you are highered.
The blessing that I received at this job is that I would have a friend who would a mentor to me....he was the teaching pastor at the church who was at one time a youth pastor too who was a about 20 years olders than me.
Jeff, that was his name, Jeff would mentor me, pour his life into me, encourage me on the days I was down, show me and disciple me on how to be a pastor, challenged me.
IT WAS A HUGE BLESSING
Jeff by the power of Holy Spirit help shape and mold me into being a pastor.
Any of you have anybody like this in your life? Maybe it wasn’t vocationally but a mentor in life, a mentor, a discipler in the ways of Jesus.
IT IS A HUGE BLESSING
We would say that person had a direct impact on my life.
God used that person to help me become the MAN or WOMAN of God that God created me to be.
Then something happened about 2 years into my time working at the church.
I still remember the day sitting in the coffee shop area of the church when Jeff said to me, “I have some news to share with you, maybe you heard it already because news travels fast in church world, that I/Jeff am feeling God calling me to plant a church”
In that moment I had to opposite feelings.
What were they?
Happiness and sadness
I was happy for Jeff (God has gifted him and called him)
But sad for me (who was going to mentor me now, who is going to show me the ropes? who do I go to when times are tough?)
Maybe you have been here to
The person who has made an indelible impact on your life is now moving away or changing companies.
This person who has blessed you is gone.
How do you feel?
Happy if they are needing to leave for the right reasons, God has blessed it
Sad because your mentor, disicipler, encouraging, you are who you are because of them.... is gone.
TENSION
These feelings we have in these moments are the FEELINGS that are rising to the surface for the disciples in Acts 1.
Why?
What happens in Acts 1 with Jesus and His disciples?
Let’s read it
Acts 1:1–3 ESV
In the first book, O Theophilus, I have dealt with all that Jesus began to do and teach, until the day when he was taken up, after he had given commands through the Holy Spirit to the apostles whom he had chosen. He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.
(the first book is Luke)
What is happening in the beginning of Acts?
It is a glorious moment for the disciples of Jesus, Jesus their rabbi, mentor, discipler, had risen from the dead and is with them in PHYSICAL FORM
What are they probably thinking in this moment about their rabbi, discipler, mentor in regards to Jesus being with them?
If Jesus can defeat DEATH, He will always be with US PHYSICALLY, in the flesh and blood.
DEATH HAS BEEN DEFEATED
HE WILL ALWAY BE THERE
Is this not what we would be thinking too?
YES
BUT IS THIS WHAT JESUS’ IS PLANNING TO DO?
Is this God’s plan?
NO
Jesus ends up leaving them 40 days after His resurrection and says it is to their advantage if Jesus does not stay
Advantage!?!
HOW?
- How is it to there advantage not to have Jesus in flesh and blood Jesus?
Let’s read John 16:7
John 16:7 ESV
Nevertheless, I tell you the truth: it is to your advantage that I go away, for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you. But if I go, I will send him to you.
Jesus says “when I go guess who comes? Holy Spirit.... to you....and not only to them as we will see but to all who believe.
Who is Holy Spirit?
God (fully God, not half God, or 1/3 God, or a helper to God as in a lesser being like an angel)
3rd person/member of the TRINITY
Parclette (our helper) (in a couple of minutes we will be the rest of the sermon we will see how the Holy Spirit helps us and why it is to our advantage)
And where does Holy Spirit reside....is He just some Spirit out and about and around us??
No
Where did Holy Spirit reside before Jesus?
Gen 1:2
Genesis 1:2 ESV
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.
Omnipresence
- And Holy Spirit resided in several people in the Old Testament, people like David, Moses, Joshua, and in the temple.
But where does He reside now for those who are believers? (where He dwells now is to our advantage)
IN YOU
1 Corinthians 3:16 ESV
Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you?
God is saying you are God’s temple and the Spirit of God is in you.
DO YOU REALIZE THAT?
GOD IS IN YOU because of HOLY SPIRIT
This is one of the reasons we can say God will never leave or forsake a believer of God because God, His Spirit is inside of you.
It is not just for David or Moses or Joshua or Saul
It is for all who believe
Heb 13:5
Hebrews 13:5 ESV
Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.”
JESUS SAYS IT IS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE BECAUSE WHEN HE LEAVES HOLY SPIRIT, GOD COMES NOT TO BE AROUND YOU IN FLESH AND BLOOD LIKE JESUS WAS TO THE DISCIPLES BUT INSIDE OF YOU....YOU HAVE GOD WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES
HOW DOES THIS HAPPEN? How do we receive the Spirit?
First, How did the disciples receive Holy Spirit?
What does Jesus tell them to do? To those who already believe in Jesus
Jesus gives them instructions in Acts 1:4-5
Acts 1:4–5 ESV
And while staying with them he ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, he said, “you heard from me; for John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now.”
You have been baptized with John’s baptism, read Matt 3:1-6)
What was John’s baptism? (Read Matt 3:1-6)
John’s baptism had to do with repentance—it was a symbolic representation of changing one’s mind and going a new direction.
Matthew 3:1–6 ESV
In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.’ ” Now John wore a garment of camel’s hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins.
ReDedication of confession sins
Matthew 3:11 ESV
“I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.
John says his baptism is a baptism of repentance of changing direction, BUT Jesus baptism will be one where you are baptized with Holy Spirit and Fire.
What happens in Acts 2:1-4?
Acts 2:1–4 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.
50 days after resurrection, Jesus has not been around for 10 days.
What is happening here?
What Jesus promised 3 years before the day of Pentecost is happening. They are beginning baptized with Holy Spirit and fire (tongues of fire).
We will read later in a couple of weeks what happens after these events.....and we will see why some people call the book of Acts, Acts of Holy Spirit.
Is this how we receive Holy Spirit?
We wait in an upper room in Jerusalem, then a sound like a rushing wind comes, and a tongues of fire appear on heads
NO
This is atypical, no other time in scripture or history is an event recorded like this exact event.
How do we receive Holy Spirit?
Acts 2:37-39
After disciples receive Holy Spirit, Peter, the one who just denied Jesus 50 days ago, preaches with boldness in the Spirit about Jesus, Peter preaches the Gospel.
And happens to 3000 who hear the Gospel?
Acts 2:37–38 ESV
Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, “Brothers, what shall we do?” And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
When do we receive Holy Spirit? Upon conversion. Upon repentance and believing in Jesus.
Doesn’t it say repent and be baptized?
Do we have to be baptized too to receive Holy Spirit?
No, baptism is an outward sign of an inward work of God.
Often you will read in the scriptures people believing and then being baptized as a outward sign of an inward work.
We see this happen in Acts 10:44-48 Holy Spirt comes then they are baptized
Acts 10:44–48 ESV
While Peter was still saying these things, the Holy Spirit fell on all who heard the word. And the believers from among the circumcised who had come with Peter were amazed, because the gift of the Holy Spirit was poured out even on the Gentiles. For they were hearing them speaking in tongues and extolling God. Then Peter declared, “Can anyone withhold water for baptizing these people, who have received the Holy Spirit just as we have?” And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ. Then they asked him to remain for some days.
We receive the Gift of the Holy Spirit at conversion God resides in you at conversation, not at baptism.
How many baptisms are there in the name of Jesus?
what does Eph 4 say?
Ephesians 4:4–5 ESV
There is one body and one Spirit—just as you were called to the one hope that belongs to your call— one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
ONE BAPTISM
Some people say you need the baptism of Holy Spirit too to receive the fullness more specifically....but the problem is in scripture there is not place that says you need to have the baptism of Holy Spirit....BUT what you do see is people being prayed over to RECEIVE a GREATER FILLING OF HOLY SPIRIT (and many people who practices baptism of Holy Spirit are praying for a greater filling of Holy Spirit)
Also, some people say we need a 2nd baptism of Holy Spirit to do the sign gifts (toungues, miracles, propheycy)
- But What doe we see in Acts 10....when were they speaking in tongues before they were baptized or after? Before
What I see in scripture is ONE baptism many fillings of Holy Spirit.
BUT HOW DOES ANY OF THINGS I JUST MENTIONED HAPPEN?
How does Holy Spirit dwell in us (which is to our advantage)? How do we become Christians?
We are going backwards a little bit.
How does conversion happen? How did it happen in your life?
Through the work of Holy Spirit…before he dwells within us He does something outside of us
How we become believers Holy Spirit does 2 things
First, Bears witness about Jesus
John 15:26
John 15:26 ESV
“But when the Helper comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth, who proceeds from the Father, he will bear witness about me.
What Holy Spirit does in our lives is He bears witness to who Jesus is, He reveals to us who is Jesus.
John 1:29 ESV
The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
First He shows us who Jesus is, and secondly He shows us we are not Jesus....we are a sinner in a need of a savior.
Holy Spirit brings conviction of sin.
- He shows us that we are a sinner in need of a savior.
John 16:8 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment:
Oh we don’t like that
One of the most gracious things Holy Spirit does in our lives is He shows us we are a sinner and in need of a savior.
You are not Jesus
YOU NEED A SAVIOR.....Believe in Jesus
Romans 10:9–10 ESV
because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved.
AND THE GOOD NEWS IS BEARING WITNESS AND CONVICTION DOES NOT STOP AT CONVERSION
Good news!?! How?
WE SEE A GREATER GLIMPS OF HIS GLORY
Nature
Worship
Reading the Word
It is through conviction at times that God helps us live a happier and Holier life.
He does this with kindness
Romans 2:4 ESV
Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?
How does this happen?
Holy Spirit comes and says to us.
You are treating your family member like garbage....go apologize…(me say I am sorry) I don’t want to
DON’T be prideful
Repair the relationship....you were in the wrong
Holy Spirit says, You should not be looking at those things on the internet....tells you to stop and then confess
I don’t want to....what if they think less of you? God doesn’t, they might and also we all fall short....NOT ONLY THAT WE MISS OUT ON HEALING
James 5:16
James 5:16 ESV
Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.
Holy Spirit helps us by
1. Dwelling in us
2. Bearing witness to who Jesus is and convicting us of sin
3. He guides and leads us into all truth
John 16:13 ESV
When the Spirit of truth comes, he will guide you into all the truth, for he will not speak on his own authority, but whatever he hears he will speak, and he will declare to you the things that are to come.
Holy Spirit will show you the way to live, the way you should go.
Here is a question does the Bible answer every question you have?
NO
The Bible answers A LOT of questions
The BIG QUESTIONS OF LIFE
But does the Bible answer questions such as
should you buy this house or that house or take this job or that job or should marry this person or that person.
The Bible does not say in 1 Pete Pinkowski 6:8 that I should buy ____ house....but it does say for me to be wise with my money
Or that 1 Peter Pinkowski 7:9 that I should take such and such job…but it does tell me I am to work.
Or should marry this person or that person....it does say
2 Cor 6:14
2 Corinthians 6:14 ESV
Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness?
The good news is we have the Spirit to guide us into all truth. He will guide us, if we listen to Him.
Look also what Ezek 36:26-27
Ezekiel 36:26–27 ESV
And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. And I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes and be careful to obey my rules.
The Spirit of God is going to lead us and show us.
This is the house you need buy
This is who you should marry
This is what you should today
You should call your friend Amanda she needs some encouragement.
BUT HERE IS A LITTLE WARNING WE NEED TO TEST THE SPIRIT, WHAT WE BELIEVE HTE SPIRIT IS SAYING
1 John 4:1 ESV
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world.
Sometimes it is not the Spirit talking but our flesh, or another persons flesh talking.
Pray about it
Wait on it
The Lord is faithful, His timing is perfect.
He will lead you in the ways you should go
I think sometimes we invoke this principle on the Lord for things we don’t want to do (as a means of procrastination) and do the opposite on things we WANT, in our flesh to do.
We see this what believers did in Acts 13:2-3
Acts 13:2–3 ESV
While they were worshiping the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” Then after fasting and praying they laid their hands on them and sent them off.
Holy Spirit
Dwells in you
Bears witness to Jesus and convicts of sin
Leads and guides
Empowers you with gifts of the spirit
4.
We will not spend a lot of time on this today…we will see over the next couple of months some of these gifts come to life.
1 Corinthians 12:7–11 ESV
To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
Holy Spirit is revealing to some of you in this room that God has gifted you, gifted you, gifted you…and you don’t believe it…you believe what you mom said about you “who said you couldn’t do anyting” or Christian pastor or leader
He has given the gift of wisdom
He has given the gift of faith
He has given the gift of healing
He has given the gift of preaching
2 Timothy 1:5–6 ESV
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,
Some of you need to be praying over by the laying on of hands, because your flame has gone dim.
Others of you need a greater filling of the Holy Spirit.
It is not your flame for ministry that has went out, but your flame for God has grown dim and God wants to have the body of believers pray over you, others of you want and need more of Holy Spirit.
If that is you we are asking for you to raise your hand and then have the body of Christ pray around you, maybe you can pray for that person and other people can pray for you....others of you can also pray for more of Holy Spirit by yourself
I want to be prayed for more of the Spirit
How that happens is for you to pray and for others to lay hands on you and pray for you to be filled.
Eph 5:18
Ephesians 5:18 ESV
And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,
Praying more of the Spirit.
Ephesians 3:14–21 ESV
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, that according to the riches of his glory he may grant you to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith—that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may have strength to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge, that you may be filled with all the fullness of God. Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.
