Matthew 7:1–11 ESV
1 “Judge not, that you be not judged. 2 For with the judgment you pronounce you will be judged, and with the measure you use it will be measured to you. 3 Why do you see the speck that is in your brother’s eye, but do not notice the log that is in your own eye? 4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when there is the log in your own eye? 5 You hypocrite, first take the log out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to take the speck out of your brother’s eye. 6 “Do not give dogs what is holy, and do not throw your pearls before pigs, lest they trample them underfoot and turn to attack you. 7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!
Asking Good Questions -
What does judge mean in their context?
How would someone in the crowd have understood this?
What does Jesus mean by pearls and pigs?
Why does Jesus give this log illustration, rather than just give the facts to them?
What is Jesus intending the audience to do with this knowledge?
Main Idea - Jesus is telling the crowd the rules we make, we don’t keep, which makes us hypocrites.
Transformational Intent - See your sin a bigger than everyone else’s.
Bottom Line - See your sin first.
Big Question -
Romans 2

2 Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things.

Introduction

Open up to Matthew 7:1-11
I hate getting cutoff.

Tension

There are some rules that either need to be enforced stricter, or rules that need to become law.
What are some rules that would make the world a better place?

Big Question - What causes us to judge others?

Read Scripture

Truth

Vs 1-2 —
Judging like what our culture thinks of judging?
All those rules we listed above.
Imagine someone ran a tape recorder on your whole life
Vs 3-5 —
optical illusion (shapes that look bigger or smaller but are the same size)
What happens when you have something small close to your eye?
If you are aware of you sin it should look bigger to you than someone else's sin.
We are so good at not seeing these things.
Cant see your nose.
Vs 6 —
What can you do to get a dog to like you?
Pearls were really valuable in Jesus time.
Swim down - dangerous
Dogs and pigs don’t see value in this
Turn and trample you
Don’t call out sin in people who aren’t christians. They won’t see the value in it.

Bottom Line - See your sin first

We are called as christians to call sin out in each other.
Your sin needs to be your highest priority
We need to have humility to see this in ourselves.

Questions

How have you heard this saying used incorrectly? What’s the danger of not helping other christians see their sin?
What are situations where we shouldn’t be judging others?
Read Galatians 1:6-9
What are situations when we should judge others?
