Eschatology: Terms and Vocabulary

I. The Second Great Sign from Heaven

Revelation 12:3 NKJV

3 And another sign appeared in heaven: behold, a great, fiery red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and seven diadems on his heads.

The first sign in heaven was a sun-clothed woman (the nation of Israel).

The second sign in heaven is an enormous red dragon (Satan), which is explained further in Revelation 12:9.

Revelation 12:9 NKJV

9 So the great dragon was cast out, that serpent of old, called the Devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was cast to the earth, and his angels were cast out with him.

He is enormous because of his great power;

red, since he has killed* multitudes; and a dragon due to his fierce nature.

This fierce, powerful, murderous dragon will appear in heaven with

Seven Heads* (symbols of world governments),

Ten Horns* (symbols of powerful kings),

Seven crowns (symbols of the seven divisions controlled by the ten powerful kings).

The dragon will have seven heads symbolizing the seven Gentile world governments that Satan has led since the beginning of creation.

It will also have ten horns, symbolizing the ten kings that will reign with him during the entire Tribulation Period.

The Bible teaches that these ten kings will rise to power, and that the Antichrist will come on the scene in a unified Europe (the European Union).

The Antichrist will subdue three of those ten kings so that their power will ultimately be concentrated into seven crowns (or seven divisions) of the last world government.

This must not be taken lightly. A one-world government empowered and controlled by Satan is a terrible thought.

Some say it will make what Adolf Hitler did during WWII look like a Sunday picnic.

A good example of how this could happen is a proposal that came before the U.N. It called for the nations to surrender their sovereignty to the U.N.,

divide the world into ten regions, increase the number of permanent members on the U.N. Security Council to ten, and put one permanent member over each region.

This is the kind of thing Christians need to watch.

The seven heads are seven Gentile world governments (Revelation 17:9–10).

Five were past in John’s day, the sixth was in power (Rome), and the seventh is the future kingdom of Antichrist:

Assyria, Egypt, Babylon, Medes and Persia, Greece, Rome, United Nations (It will go through three phases or stages at the end of the age)

Phase I—World divided into 10 regions with 10 leaders called kings (10 horns with 10 crowns)

Phase II—Antichrist takes over 3 regions (leaves 10 kings or horns, but only 7 regions or 7 crowns)

Phase III—Antichrist takes over whole world (He controls 10 kings and 7 crowns or regions)—this will be the kingdom with toes of Iron + Clay (EU + Others) on the statue in Nebuchadnezzar’s dream (Daniel 2)

Note: The ten horns are ten future kings or leaders that will rule with the Antichrist at the end of the age (Revelation 17:12).

These groups advocate a world government, a merging of national entities into an international organization that centralizes political, economic, and cultural spheres into a global network.
