Blessed Are Those Who Mourn

FOCUS

If someone always laughs or always cries, or never laughs or never cries, something is terribly wrong & that person desperately needs help. While laughing & crying are necessary for mental stability, spiritual health & emotional wellbeing, they need to be expressed at the right time, in the right way & for the right reasons.

This morning we hear Jesus tell us that those who mourn will be comforted. Our sincere sorrow concerning the sadness, sin & brokenness that accompany us within & without brings the blessing of God. He really does comfort those who mourn.

This isn’t a call to go looking for sorrow. It’s an invitation to turn to God when it comes. May this message be used by Him to give us a greater understanding of the comfort He gives as the poor in spirit mourn as they should.

To mourn is to …

1. grieve by acknowledging how broken we are & the world is.

It’s not OK to be OK with all that is wrong with us & the world in which we live.

Matthew 5:4 (Psalm 106:43 Micah 1:7-9 James 4:8-10)

2. position ourselves for the blessed comfort only God can give.

There’s nothing like the comfort the God of all comfort gives.

Romans 7:21-25 & 8:1-2 / 2 Corinthians 1:3-4 & 7:8-13 (esp v10)

Making It Real

1] Are you getting batter at embracing how broken we & the world are?

2] In what ways have you experienced God’s blessings as you’ve mourned?

Action Step

Write down three of the biggest life experiences in which you’ve mourned.

Look for opportunities to share them with others currently in that same boat (2 Cor 1:3-4).
