Notes
Transcript
INTRO
Cory Cooper, Executive Pastor here at OBC
Married for 3 years to Chrissy, and we have a 7 month old baby boy named CJ
I went to OCP from 1st grade through 8th grade
Went to Alive on wednesday nights during high school
Even into college, I struggled with identity, purpose, struggled with constantly wondering what other people thought about me....what they saw when they watched me...
Every human being wrestles with these things, even the popular kids
The verses we are going to look at today paint us a picture of identity and purpose. It zooms in to us as individuals, and it also zooms out and takes a shot of the bigger picture, and the future picture all at the same time.

TRUTHS

God is Holy
meaning he is perfect, and he is also good
God is sovereign
fancy word meaning he’s in control of everything
knows it all, created it all
The Bible is God’s Word
perfect, no mess ups
66 books, not 65, not 67...
God is sovereign rememnber, I believe he gav eme this book on purpose
Gods word shows us who He is, who I am, what I’m here for.
You and I
created by God, in the image of God
eternal beings
our earthly bodies will die
soul will continue to live on
with God in heaven or absent from God in hell
Turn to Ephesians 2:19-22 on your iphones please or follow on the sky Bible
The passage is written to Christians, followers of Jesus who make up the church at ephesus.
But in this passage we see the invitation of the gospel, really really good news for everybody, even those of you sitting in this room who want nothing to do with God...
Ephesians 2:19–22 (ESV)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, 21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
Let’s Pray
Ephesians 2:19 (ESV)
19 So then you are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God,

Strangers

No rights at all, because government doesn’t know you’re here. US someone who comes in under the radar

Aliens

From another country, but government knows your here. Have some privileges

Fellow Citizens

In Christ, we get access to this new country, all the rights of everyone else even though we were born somewhere else
Romans 10:9 says “if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you’ll be saved.
Citizenship
Get’s much better than that though...

MEMBERS OF THE HOUSEHOLD OF GOD

ADOPTION: Mephobosheth
Seat at the table was a statement of adoption as a son
David’s son had seats at the table
David put the crippled grandson of the man who tried to destroy him over and over again at his table, permanently.
For the rest of his days
PRAISE GOD for adopting me into his family.
New Family, new race
eat at the same dinner table, same household. Same Father. Same brother and Co-heir, Jesus Christ.
Individual status, let’s look at what God’s plan is for us together
Ephesians 2:20 (ESV)
20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone,

BUILT

Things are built for a purpose, especially buildings.
Church, Body of Christ was/is/will be Built
THis building is more beautiful than anything we can think of. Pyramids, Taj Majal, The Matterhorn, Cinderellas Castle,
before concrete trucks just pulled up to a hole in the ground and poured the slab foundation of a house or a building, masons had to use individual blocks or stones to build structures.
the cornerstone was the first stone placed for a building. It is in the corner and every stone of the foundation uses the cornerstone as it’s guide for placement.
THAT’S FIRST STONE, WHAT COMES NEXT?

US: the STONES

hand crafted by God
on purpose
God’s will for you is perfect, and you are a vital part of the whole structure
We will never know our true purpose without regard to the cornerstone
If the cornerstone is off the building is doomed.

BEING JOINED TOGETHER

Ephesians 2:21 (ESV)
21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.
In Christ
WHY?
No afterthought, not only was the church built to Glorify God but we are also God’s plan to save the lost. If you read the Bible, the church is Plan A and there is no plan B…Built on purpose to Glorify God and fulfil his purposes.
That is why, Glorify God, proclaim the gospel, make disciples…so obviously
we can’t do this as individuals, church is an assembly, a group, a family...
You are necessary
Church is necessary for you
Church needs you and therefore you need the church.
household, family, new race of people who are for you and committed to God’s glory and your good
Built on the rock of Jesus Christ.
We align ourselves to the cornerstone.

Being means this is not an old building that is finished, it is being build, being joined, it is alive, it is active

we will sin, we will mess up, we will hurt one another, but we continue to align ourselves to Jesus

HOLY TEMPLE, Dwelling Place for God

Ephesians 2:21–22 (ESV)
21 in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord. 22 In him you also are being built together into a dwelling place for God by the Spirit.
OLD Testament, the temple that God instructs Moses to build, housed the ark of the covenant in the Holy of Holies. That is where the Glory of God resided, and no one other than the High Priest could enter, unless they die.Our missions as individual Christians is to Glorify God in all we say and do. Spirit resides in us individually

INVITATION

bow your heads and close your eyes

1. NEED TO RE_ALIGN with the Cornerstone

God is so gracious, and forgives us, confess your sins to him, Go to Him every daya
Pray

GROWING

2. Be adopted into the household, make Jesus the Lord of your life

Church is growing, adding family members, growing in unity, to the glory of God.
