Romans 12- The Gifts

12:1- Sacrifices Living-

harder than killing

no blaze of glory, no kamikaze, no holy suicide- have to live with it

Baptism is entrance into a life of sacrifice

It is only REASONABLE

When we can’t sacrifice: will, appetite, sin, agend, self- we are being unreasonable

bit evaluating things properly, not considering Christ

12:2- Conformed to the world- to be shaped by

What is the friendship of the world that makes me Gods enemy? (James 4:4) Ye adulterers and adulteresses ,  know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God ?  whosoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

Linked to pride and self- The Satan

Transformed

Have to leave open the possibility for change

Self analysis and deceptiveness of emotions/rationalizations

process leads to perfect will of God

Do we really want the will of God

Not my will but thine be done

12:3 Sober = Seruiys- take yourself seriously

Every Man= every list of gifts uses this terminology

12:4 Member= body part

Office= function or purpose

grace (χαρισ) - faith (πιστισ) = both given

Gifts in Rom 12

Prophecy- Ephesus- proud look

Ministry- Smyrna- lying tongue

Teaching- Pergamos- shed innocent blood

Exhortation- Thyatira- devise wicked imagination

Giving- Sardis- swift in running to mischief

Ruling/Leading/Managing- Philadelphia- false witness

Mercy (lit. pity)- Laodicea- sowing discord
