Introduction
Reference the Penny competition.
Opening Illustration:
Finding a penny with a Mark, even on this small scale can be difficult. Honestly, it is a game of chance. To some extent you can control how quickly you can pick up the next penny, but you can’t necessarily control when you will pick up the penny with the mark on it. The fact is that the penny is in a different spot in the bowl every time.
It truly is a game of chance. Yet, let’s for just a moment imagine expanding this game of chance. Now imagine instead of pennies we had a stack of a silver dollar and stacked them 2 foot tall. Now, imagine if we took that stack of coins and continued to stack them across the entire state of Texas. Yet, one. Only one was marked with an X. Then we blindfolded you and expected you to pull the marked coin on your first attempt.
What do you think would happen? Would he do it? The odds of pulling it out is nearly impossible. Peter Stoner said, that Jesus fulfilling just eight prophecies has the same odds as that man pulling that coin.
Yet, let’s make it just a little bigger.
What about 16 prophecies? Let’s say we took one of you yet again and blind folded you. We took the same silver dollar and shoved them all into a sphere and filled the sphere up full of more coins. Now, we would need to put the sun at the center of the sphere. The sphere would then reach out all the way out to Neptune’s orbit. Then you would have to try and pick the marked coin on your first try! The numerical value is 1 X 10^45 power! That’s 45 1 with 45 zeroes!
Yet, Jesus didn’t fulfill yet lets really up the number What about 48 prophecies?
First off, how many of you know what is electron? It one of the smallest particles of matter known to man! It takes 2.5 quadrillion electrons in a straight line to make 1 inch!
You only thought the pennies were hard. Try looking for a mark on the electron! The odds of one person being able to accomplish 48 prophecies would be 1 in 10^157 power! In other words, if we took 10^157 of those electrons and merged them all together into a ball. It would practically fill the entire known universe.
Yet, Jesus didn’t just fulfill 48 prophecies. He fulfilled over 300 prophecies!
Over the next several weeks. We are going to be examining how God promised and used his prophets to declare the coming messiah and how Jesus fulfilled those prophecies!
Tonight, we begin with the Prophecy of Lineage.
The prophecy
I. Human Lineage
I. Human Lineage
1. Shem
1. Shem
26 He also said, “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Shem; and let Canaan be his servant.
27 May God enlarge Japheth, and let him dwell in the tents of Shem, and let Canaan be his servant.”
36 the son of Cainan, the son of Arphaxad, the son of Shem, the son of Noah, the son of Lamech,
2. Abraham
2. Abraham
a. Blessing through His descendent.
3 I will bless those who bless you, and him who dishonors you I will curse, and in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.”
25 You are the sons of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your fathers, saying to Abraham, ‘And in your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.’
26 God, having raised up his servant, sent him to you first, to bless you by turning every one of you from your wickedness.”
b. The promise of land to Christ.
7 Then the Lord appeared to Abram and said, “To your offspring I will give this land.” So he built there an altar to the Lord, who had appeared to him.
16 Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, “And to offsprings,” referring to many, but referring to one, “And to your offspring,” who is Christ.
3. Isaac
3. Isaac
a. The promise of the world being blessed through the Offspring of Isaac.
19 God said, “No, but Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac. I will establish my covenant with him as an everlasting covenant for his offspring after him.
7 and not all are children of Abraham because they are his offspring, but “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”
18 of whom it was said, “Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.”
2 And the Lord appeared to him and said, “Do not go down to Egypt; dwell in the land of which I shall tell you.
3 Sojourn in this land, and I will be with you and will bless you, for to you and to your offspring I will give all these lands, and I will establish the oath that I swore to Abraham your father.
4 I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven and will give to your offspring all these lands. And in your offspring all the nations of the earth shall be blessed,
5 because Abraham obeyed my voice and kept my charge, my commandments, my statutes, and my laws.”
4. Judah
4. Judah
10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah, nor the ruler’s staff from between his feet, until tribute comes to him; and to him shall be the obedience of the peoples.
Part of the prophecy.
5. David
5. David
12 When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.
1 The book of the genealogy of Jesus Christ, the son of David, the son of Abraham.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
6. Zerubbabel
6. Zerubbabel
23 On that day, declares the Lord of hosts, I will take you, O Zerubbabel my servant, the son of Shealtiel, declares the Lord, and make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you, declares the Lord of hosts.”
23 Jesus, when he began his ministry, was about thirty years of age, being the son (as was supposed) of Joseph, the son of Heli,
24 the son of Matthat, the son of Levi, the son of Melchi, the son of Jannai, the son of Joseph,
25 the son of Mattathias, the son of Amos, the son of Nahum, the son of Esli, the son of Naggai,
26 the son of Maath, the son of Mattathias, the son of Semein, the son of Josech, the son of Joda,
27 the son of Joanan, the son of Rhesa, the son of Zerubbabel, the son of Shealtiel, the son of Neri,
Because the Bible keeps track of genealogies we are able to witness how God keeps working through history leading to the birth of Christ. We see how God continues to prophecy that Jesus Christ is coming! He is going to rule! He is going to bless the world through his life. In his coming!
II. Divine Lineage.
II. Divine Lineage.
6 For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. And the Lord God will give to him the throne of his father David,
14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
16 Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.
5 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will raise up for David a righteous Branch, and he shall reign as king and deal wisely, and shall execute justice and righteousness in the land.
6 In his days Judah will be saved, and Israel will dwell securely. And this is the name by which he will be called: ‘The Lord is our righteousness.’
So What?
God is fully man and fully God. He is the promised offspring of the OT and he is the chosen one from before the foundations of the earth.
Jesus is fully God and fully human meaning he perfectly relates to us and God the Father.
We can fully trust in the deity and humanity of Christ.
We can rest assured knowing that God is truly good and trust worthy.
