        The Life of Jeremiah Yahweh establishes    9/21/08 p.m.

Jeremiah (jer-e-mi’-ah) = Elevated of the LORD; whom Jehovah has appointed; Jehovah is high; exalted of God. Jah will cast forth.[1]

Son of Hilkiah; a Benjamite     Jer. 1:1

Native of Anathoth     Jer. 1:1

Called before birth

Jer. 1:4–10  4 Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying:

5     “Before I  formed you in the womb  I knew you;

     Before you were born I sanctified you;

     I ordained you a prophet to the nations.”

6 Then said I:

     “Ah, Lord God!

     Behold, I cannot speak, for I am a youth.”

7     But the Lord said to me:

     “Do not say, ‘I am a youth,’

     For you shall go to all to whom I send you,

     And whatever I command you, you shall speak.

8     Do not be afraid of their faces,

     For I am with you to deliver you,” says the Lord.

Prophet under kings Josiah, Jehoiakim, and Zedekiah     Jer. 1:2, 3

Forbidden to marry

Jer. 16:1–13 The word of the Lord also came to me, saying, 2 “You shall not take a wife, nor shall you have sons or daughters in this place.”

Has internal conflicts

Jer. 20:7–18        I am in derision daily;

     Everyone mocks me.

9     Then I said, “I will not make mention of Him,

     Nor speak anymore in His name.”

     But His word was in my heart like a burning fire

     Shut up in my bones;

     I was weary of holding it back,

     And I could not.

10     For I heard many mocking:  “Fear on every side!”

18     Why did I come forth from the womb to see labor and sorrow,

     That my days should be consumed with shame?

Imprisoned by Pashur

Jer. 20:1–6  Now Pashhur the son of Immer, the priest who was also chief governor in the house of the Lord, heard that Jeremiah prophesied these things. 2 Then Pashhur struck Jeremiah the prophet, and put him in the stocks that were in the high gate of Benjamin, which was by the house of the Lord.

Writes his prophecy; Jehoiakim burns it     Jer. 36:1–26

Prophecy rewritten     Jer. 36:27–32

Tells captives to build in Babylon

Jer. 29:4–9  4     Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all who were carried away captive, whom I have caused to be carried away from Jerusalem to Babylon:

5     Build houses and dwell in them; plant gardens and eat their fruit. 6 Take wives and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, so that they may bear sons and daughters—that you may be increased there, and not diminished

10     For thus says the Lord: After seventy years are completed at Babylon, I will visit you and perform My good word toward you, and cause you to return to this place.

Motives misunderstood; Accused of defection

Jer. 37:1–16   12 that Jeremiah went out of Jerusalem to go into the land of Benjamin to claim his property there among the people. 13 And when he was in the Gate of Benjamin, a captain of the guard was there whose name was Irijah the son of Shelemiah, the son of Hananiah; and he seized Jeremiah the prophet, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans!”  14 Then Jeremiah said, “False! I am not defecting to the Chaldeans.” But he did not listen to him.

So Irijah seized Jeremiah and brought him to the princes. 15 Therefore the princes were angry with Jeremiah, and they struck him and put him in prison in the house of Jonathan the scribe. For they had made that the prison.

Released by Zedekiah

Jer. 37:17–21  16 When Jeremiah entered the dungeon and the cells, and Jeremiah had remained there many days, 17 then Zedekiah the king sent and took him out. The king asked him secretly in his house, and said, “Is there any word from the Lord?”

21 Then Zedekiah the king commanded that they should commit Jeremiah to the court of the prison, and that they should give him daily a piece of bread from the bakers’ street, until all the bread in the city was gone. Thus Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Cast into a dungeon

Jer. 38:1–6  6 So they took Jeremiah and cast him into the dungeon of Malchiah the king’s son, which was in the court of the prison, and they let Jeremiah down with ropes. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire. So Jeremiah sank in the mire.

Saved by an Ethiopian

Jer. 38:7–28  8 Ebed-Melech went out of the king’s house and spoke to the king, saying: 9 “My lord the king, these men have done evil in all that they have done to Jeremiah the prophet, whom they have cast into the dungeon, and he is likely to die from hunger in the place where he is. For there is no more bread in the city.” 10 Then the king commanded Ebed-Melech the Ethiopian, saying, “Take from here thirty men with you, and lift Jeremiah the prophet out of the dungeon before he dies.” 13 So they pulled Jeremiah up with ropes and lifted him out of the dungeon. And Jeremiah remained in the court of the prison.

Set free by Nebuchadnezzar

Jer. 39:11–14  11 Now Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon gave charge concerning Jeremiah to Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, saying, 12 “Take him and look after him, and do him no harm; but do to him just as he says to you.” 13 So Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard sent Nebushasban, Rabsaris, Nergal-Sharezer, Rabmag, and all the king of Babylon’s chief officers; 14 then they sent someone to take Jeremiah from the court of the prison, and committed him to Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, that he should take him home. So he dwelt among the people.

Given liberty of choice by Nebuzaradan

Jer. 40:1–6  4 And now look, I free you this day from the chains that were on your hand. If it seems good to you to come with me to Babylon, come, and I will look after you. But if it seems wrong for you to come with me to Babylon, remain here. See, all the land is before you; wherever it seems good and convenient for you to go, go there.”

Forced to flee to Egypt

Jer. 43:5–7  . 5 But Johanan the son of Kareah and all the captains of the forces took all the remnant of Judah who had returned to dwell in the land of Judah, from all nations where they had been driven— 6 men, women, children, the king’s daughters, and every person whom Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard had left with Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, and Jeremiah the prophet and Baruch the son of Neriah. 7 So they went to the land of Egypt, for they did not obey the voice of the Lord.

Last prophecies at Tahpanhes, Egypt

Jer. 43:8–13  10 and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel: “Behold, I will send and bring Nebuchadnezzar the king of Babylon, My servant, and will set his throne above these stones that I have hidden. And he will spread his royal pavilion over them. 11 When he comes, he shall strike the land of Egypt
