!!!!!! Introduction
Two Greek schools of philosophy flowered during the Roman period.
Each offered a path to personal happiness, but their paths went in opposite directions.
The Stoics felt that the body should be controlled, denied, even ignored in order to free the mind.
He taught his disciples that a man’s happiness consisted in bringing himself into harmony with the course of the universe.
They regarded God and the world as power and its manifestation, matter being a passive ground in which dwells the divine energy.
Their ethics were a protest against moral indifference, and to live in harmony with nature, conformably with reason and the demands of universal good, and in the utmost indifference to pleasure, pain, and all external good or evil, was their fundamental maxim.
Epicureans taught that the body must be satisfied if the mind was to know happiness.
The Epicureans were concerned with the practical results of philosophy in everyday life.
Their chief aim in life was pleasure.
They believed they could find happiness by seeking that which brought physical and mental pleasure, and by avoiding that which brought pain.
True pleasure and not absolute truth was the end at which he aimed; experience and not reason the test on which he relied.
Thus the philosophers of Alexandria perpetuated the spirit and culture of fifth-century Athens.
In so doing, they perpetuated the spirit of ancient Greece.
