Matthew 7:7–14 ESV
7 “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and the one who seeks finds, and to the one who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or which one of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? 11 If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him! 12 “So whatever you wish that others would do to you, do also to them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. 13 “Enter by the narrow gate. For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction, and those who enter by it are many. 14 For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few.
What did we talk about last time?
Matthew 7:1-11
Judging others - see your sin first
Turn with me to Matthew 7:7-12

Big Question - What is the one thing man kind wants?

What is the thing that we are all searching for?
Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs
physiological (food and clothing),
safety (job security),
love and belonging needs (friendship),
esteem
self-actualization.
Maslow stated that human motivation is based on people seeking fulfillment and change through personal growth. Self-actualized people are those who were fulfilled and doing all they were capable of.
Becoming the best version of you. Have you heard this before???
The problem - how do you know when you are there?
What about people in third world countries?
What do we actually want?

Verse 7-11

What is Matthew getting at? First 4 verses?
Is Jesus’ point that if we keep asking God will eventually give in?
Is His point that God will give you what you want?
If my son ask me if they can play with fire
Everyones dad in here is tainted by sin, yet they feed you clothe you …
God - Infinitely better.
What is it that God gives us?
Himself
What every person on earth wants is to find salvation. Whatever that means for them.
God gives us not just salvation but himself.

Verse 12

This is the golden rule.
Typically said in the negative.
Whatever you wish someone wouldn’t do to you, don’t do to someone else.
So … meaning?
Out of milk SO I went to the store.
If God doesn’t simply give us salvation, but gives us himself
How are we supposed to treat others?
As good as we wish we could treat ourselves.
Is this possible?

Bottom Line - God gives us what we desire most, we should do that for others.

Does this mean that you should let people walk all over you?
Kind of
Jesus let people walk over him
Gospel
Questions:
Is the golden rule something we should always do, or are there times when we shouldn’t?
