Text:
Romans 6:19 NKJV
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

I. Defining Habits

Definition – an action or pattern of behavior that is repeated so often that it becomes typical of somebody, although he or she may be unaware of it: prevailing disposition or character of a person’s thoughts and feelings.

A Directive

Romans 6:19 NKJV
I speak in human terms because of the weakness of your flesh. For just as you presented your members as slaves of uncleanness, and of lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves of righteousness for holiness.

Defining Old Habits

How did you present your members (body actions, thoughts, emotions, desires, etc) as slaves of uncleanness and lawlessness leading to more lawlessness?

Discard Old Habits

What are those old habits that need to be discarded (identify)?

Hebrews 12:1 NKJV
Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
Colossians 3:5–6 NKJV
Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. Because of these things the wrath of God is coming upon the sons of disobedience,
Colossians 3:8–9 NKJV
But now you yourselves are to put off all these: anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy language out of your mouth. Do not lie to one another, since you have put off the old man with his deeds,
James 1:21 NKJV
Therefore lay aside all filthiness and overflow of wickedness, and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.
1 Peter 2:1 NKJV
Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,

Developing New Habits

Based on Your New Identity

1 Peter 1:22–25 NKJV
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart, having been born again, not of corruptible seed but incorruptible, through the word of God which lives and abides forever, because “All flesh is as grass, And all the glory of man as the flower of the grass. The grass withers, And its flower falls away, But the word of the Lord endures forever.” Now this is the word which by the gospel was preached to you.
1 Peter 2:1 NKJV
Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking,
1 Peter 2:2–3 NKJV
as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby, if indeed you have tasted that the Lord is gracious.
Colossians 3:1 NKJV
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God.
Colossians 3:3 NKJV
For you died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.
Colossians 3:4–5 NKJV
When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with Him in glory. Therefore put to death your members which are on the earth: fornication, uncleanness, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.

Based on Your Incorporation of the Word

1 Peter 1:22 NKJV
Since you have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit in sincere love of the brethren, love one another fervently with a pure heart,
1 Peter 2:1–2 NKJV
Therefore, laying aside all malice, all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and all evil speaking, as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,
Colossians 3:1–2 NKJV
If then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ is, sitting at the right hand of God. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Colossians 3:16 NKJV
Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Based on Your Surrendering to the Holy Spirit

Ephesians 5:18 NKJV
And do not be drunk with wine, in which is dissipation; but be filled with the Spirit,

Based on Your Surrounding Yourself with God’s People

Hebrews 10:24 NKJV
And let us consider one another in order to stir up love and good works,

Habits are developed and reinforced by frequent repetition

IN THE FAITH (CHRISTIAN FAITH)

Colossians 1:23 NKJV
if indeed you continue in the faith, grounded and steadfast, and are not moved away from the hope of the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven, of which I, Paul, became a minister.
1 John 2:19 NKJV
They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

PRAYER

Colossians 4:2 NKJV
Continue earnestly in prayer, being vigilant in it with thanksgiving;
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

PRAISE

Hebrews 13:15 NKJV
Therefore by Him let us continually offer the sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of our lips, giving thanks to His name.
Psalm 70:4 NKJV
Let all those who seek You rejoice and be glad in You; And let those who love Your salvation say continually, “Let God be magnified!”

In breaking sinful habits never let an exception occur

“When we allow exceptions we are reinforcing old habits, or else failing to reinforce the new one. At this point we must watch the ‘just this once’ type of thinking, which is subtle, dangerous trap. Because we are unwilling to pay the price of saying no to our desires, we tell ourselves we will indulge only once more, and tomorrow will be different. Deep inside we know that tomorrow it will be even more difficult to say no, but we don’t dwell on this fact.”
Example: Drunkenness
Leviticus 10:9 NKJV
“Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations,
Proverbs 23:31 NKJV
Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly;
Proverbs 31:4 NKJV
It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink;
Daniel 1:8 NKJV
But Daniel purposed in his heart that he would not defile himself with the portion of the king’s delicacies, nor with the wine which he drank; therefore he requested of the chief of the eunuchs that he might not defile himself.
Name sinful habits that you are making exceptions for?

Diligence in all areas is required to ensure success

“We may feel that a particular habit ‘isn’t too bad’ but continually giving in to that habit weakens our wills against the onslaught of temptations from other directions.”
Romans 13:14 NKJV
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to fulfill its lusts.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2 Peter 1:5–7 NKJV
But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

Don’t be discouraged by falling

“There is a difference between failing and becoming a failure. We become a failure when we give up – when we stop trying.”
Proverbs 24:16 NKJV
For a righteous man may fall seven times And rise again, But the wicked shall fall by calamity.
(KJV) 16 For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again: but the wicked shall fall into mischief. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Psalm 37:24 NKJV
Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the Lord upholds him with His hand.
(KJV) 24 Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down: for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Micah 7:8 (KJV) 8 Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise; when I sit in darkness, the LORD shall be a light unto me. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
2 Corinthians 4:9 (KJV) 9 Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed; _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
