Overcome or Overcame?
I Jn. 5:4-5
I will no longer talk much with you, for the ruler of this world is coming. He has no claim on me
Jn.14:30
“If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the
world would love you as its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the
world, therefore the world hates you.
Jn.15:18-19
The world hated Jesus. It will hate us too; not because we proclaim an “afterlife”, but because we
proclaim another kingdom
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation.
But take heart; I have overcome the world.”
Jn.16:33
For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world,
even our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of
God?
I Jn.5:4-5 (KJV)
Questions to address
What did Jesus mean “I have overcome the world?”
How did He accomplish it?
How do we as believers overcome the world?
What does that look like?
What did Jesus mean “he has overcome the world?”
Overcome means to defeat, overpower, to conquer
We know that we are from God, and the whole world lies in the power of the evil one.
I Jn.5:19
When Adam succumbed to the offer of Satan (the knowledge of good and evil) he also surrendered
dominion to Satan
Now is the judgment of this world:
now shall the prince of this world be cast out.
And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me.
Jn.12:31-32
How did He accomplish it?
Since the children are made of flesh and blood, it’s logical that the Savior took on flesh and blood in order
to rescue them by his death. By embracing death, taking it into himself, he destroyed the Devil’s hold on
death and freed all who cower through life, scared to death of death.
Heb. 2:14-15 (The Message)
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our sins, having canceled the charge of our legal
indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us; he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And
having disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by
the cross. Col.2:13b-16 (NIV)
Jesus did not conquer by overpowering, but by underpowering
He has delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son
Col.1:13
A new kingdom…a new creation
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.
II Cor.5:17-18 (ESV)
…what we see is that anyone united with the Messiah gets a fresh start, is created new. The old life is gone; a
new life emerges!
II Cor. 5:17-18 (The Message)
Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his
creatures.
James 1:18 (ESV)
How do we as believers overcome the world?
I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But
take heart; I have overcome (perfect tense) the world.”
Jn.16:33
I write unto you, young men, because ye have overcome (perfect tense) the wicked one. I Jn.2:13
I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye have
overcome (perfect tense) the wicked one. I Jn.2:14
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome (perfect tense) them: because greater is he that is in you,
than he that is in the world. I Jn.4:4
We are in Christ and Christ is in us…positional truth
Our faith empowers us to experience our position
For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome
the world—our faith. I Jn.5:4
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now
live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
Ga. 2:20 (ESV)
What does that look like?
So these came to Philip, who was from Bethsaida in Galilee, and asked him, “Sir, we wish to see Jesus.” Philip
went and told Andrew; Andrew and Philip went and told Jesus. And Jesus answered them, “The hour has come
for the Son of Man to be glorified. Truly, truly, I say to you, unless a grain of wheat falls into the earth and dies, it
remains alone; but if it dies, it bears much fruit. Whoever loves his life loses it, and whoever hates his life in this
world will keep it for eternal life. If anyone serves me, he must follow me; and where I am, there will my servant
be also. If anyone serves me, the Father will honor him.
“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I have
come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it, and I will
glorify it again.” The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others said, “An angel has
spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine. Now is the judgment of this
world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted up from the earth, will draw all people
to myself.”
Jn.12:21-32 (ESV)
Like Jesus we conquer, not by overpowering, but underpowering
Two ways of
conquering
God made you alive with Christ. He forgave us all our
sins, having canceled the charge of our legal
indebtedness, which stood against us and condemned us;
he has taken it away, nailing it to the cross. And having
disarmed the powers and authorities, he made a public
spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.
Col.2:13b-16 (NIV)
And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come
proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech
or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you
except Jesus Christ and him crucified.…
But we impart a secret and hidden wisdom of God, which
God decreed before the ages for our glory. None of the
rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they
would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
I Cor.2 :1-2,7-8
So let my life be the proof, the proof of your love
Let my love look like you, and what you're made of
How you lived, how you died
Love is sacrifice
So let my life be the proof
The proof of your love
When it's all said and done
When we sing our final song
Only love remains
Only love remains
For King and Country
