Wrapping It Up…Keep Yourself from Idols
1 Jn.5:6-21
Refuting Cerinthus and the subsequent errors 5:6-13
The divine Christ descended upon Jesus at his baptism and left Him before His crucifixion
The three that testify:
The water, the blood and the Spirit
By this you know the Spirit of God: every spirit that confesses that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is
from God, and every spirit that does not confess Jesus is not from God. This is the spirit of the
antichrist, which you heard was coming and now is in the world already.
I Jn.4:2-3
Confidence in Jesus Christ for life
Prayer and a Sin unto Death 5:14-17
John does not name it
Spiritual death, or physical death?
Be careful in drawing any conclusions
The Christian Life Is the Real Life 5:18-21
How do we keep ourselves from sin and the wicked one?
I have written unto you, young men, because ye are strong, and the word of God abides in you, and ye
have overcome the wicked one.
I Jn.2:14b
Little children, you are from God and have overcome them, for he who is in you is greater than he who
is in the world.
I Jn.4:4
For whatsoever is born of God overcomes the world: and this is the victory that overcomes the world,
even our faith. Who is he that overcomes the world, but he that believeth that Jesus is the Son of God?
I Jn.5:4-5
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Gal.5:16
As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the
uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy.
They are to do good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and ready to share, thus storing up
treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the future, so that they may take hold of that
which is truly life.
I Tim.6:17-19
What Does Real/True Life Look Like?
For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” But if you bite and
devour one another, watch out that you are not consumed by one another.
But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.
Gal.5:14-16
Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knows
God. He that loveth not knows not God; for God is love.
I Jn.4:7-8
Real/true life looks like Jesus
Keep Yourself from Idols…Why?
As concerning therefore the eating of those things that are offered in sacrifice unto idols, we know that
an idol is nothing in the world, and that there is none other God but one.
I Cor.8:4
What do I imply then? That food offered to idols is anything, or that an idol is anything? No, I imply
that what pagans sacrifice they offer to demons and not to God. I do not want you to be participants
(partakers, implying fellowship) with demons.
I Cor.10:19-20
Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and
their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” Then
Jesus said to him, “Be gone, Satan! For it is written,
“‘You shall worship the Lord your God
and him only shall you serve.’”
Mt.4:8-10
What is an Idol?
Anything we substitute for the true God
I write to you, fathers,
because you know him who is from the beginning.
I write to you, young men,
because you are strong,
and the word of God abides in you,
and you have overcome the evil one.
Do Not Love the World
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is
not in him. For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of
life—is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires,
but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
I Jn.2:14-17
And he said to them, “Take care, and be on your guard against all covetousness, for one's life does not
consist in the abundance of his possessions.”
Luke 12:15
Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and
covetousness, which is idolatry.
Col.3:5
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath
said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
Heb.13:5 (KJV)
And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God,
and Jesus Christ whom you have sent….That they all may be one;
as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be
one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me.
Jn.17:3, 21
When God wanted to send the best message He could; He sent
a person.
He still does
“In the beginning was the divine dance.”
Fellowship is an invitation to dance with God so
that the world will believe
