The world’s greatest killer is not disease;
it's not a pandemic
it’s war
The way of peace they do not know,
and there is no justice in their paths;
they have made their roads crooked;
no one who treads on them knows peace.
Therefore justice is far from us,
and righteousness does not overtake us;
we hope for light, and behold, darkness,
and for brightness, but we walk in gloom.
Isaiah 59:8-9 (ESV)
Justice is right relationships among all things in the created order of things.
Paul Marshall -Baylor University
And you (John the Baptist), child, will be called the prophet of the Most High;
for you will go before the Lord to prepare his ways,
to give knowledge of salvation to his people
in the forgiveness of their sins,
because of the tender mercy of our God,
whereby the sunrise shall visit us from on high
to give light to those who sit in darkness and in the shadow of death,
to guide our feet into the way of peace.”
Luke 1:76-80 (ESV)
And when he drew near and saw the city, he wept over it, saying, “Would that you, even you, had
known on this day the things that make for peace! But now they are hidden from your eyes. For the
days will come upon you, when your enemies will set up a barricade around you and surround you
and hem you in on every side and tear you down to the ground, you and your children within you. And
they will not leave one stone upon another in you, because you did not know the time of your
visitation.”
Luke 19:41-44
And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, “Drink of
it, all of you, for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the
forgiveness of sins. I tell you I will not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day
when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.”
Mt.26:27-29
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may
receive the promised eternal inheritance, since a death has occurred that redeems
them from the transgressions committed under the first covenant. For where a will is
involved, the death of the one who made it must be established. For a will takes effect
only at death, since it is not in force as long as the one who made it is alive.
Heb.9:15-17
Therefore he is the mediator of a new covenant, so that those who are called may receive the
promised eternal inheritance
Heb.9:15
What is this “inheritance?”
But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever: a sceptre of righteousness is the
sceptre of thy kingdom. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God,
hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. Heb.1:8-9 (KJV)
μέτοχος (metochos)
a partaker, Heb. 3:1, 14; 6:4; 12:8; an associate, partner, fellow, Lk. 5:7; Heb. 1:9

Daniel declared, “I saw in my vision by night, and behold, the four winds of heaven were stirring up the
great sea. And four great beasts came up out of the sea, different from one another…
“I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and
he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory
and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting
dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Daniel 7:2-3,13-14
The high priest said to him, “I charge you under oath by the living God: Tell us if you are the Messiah, the
Son of God.”
“You have said so,” Jesus replied. “But I say to all of you: From now on you will see the Son of Man sitting
at the right hand of the Mighty One and coming on the clouds of heaven.”
Then the high priest tore his clothes and said, “He has spoken blasphemy! Why do we need any more
witnesses? Look, now you have heard the blasphemy.
Mt.26:63-65
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted
up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.”
Jn.12:31-32
When was Satan, as the ruler of this world, cast out?
How was he cast out?
And you, who were dead in your trespasses and the uncircumcision of your flesh, God made alive
together with him, having forgiven us all our trespasses, by canceling the record of debt that stood
against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross. He disarmed the rulers and
authorities and put them to open shame, by triumphing over them in him.
Col.2:13-15
The three temptations of Jesus- the enticements of bread (prosperity), circuses (popularity), and
empire (politics)
“Take the ring of power Jesus.”
Christ the Wisdom and Power, not of men, but of God
For Christ did not send me to baptize but to preach the gospel, and not with words of eloquent
wisdom, lest the cross of Christ be emptied of its power.
For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the
power of God. For it is written,
“I will destroy the wisdom of the wise,
and the discernment of the discerning I will thwart.”
Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God
made foolish the wisdom of the world? For since, in the wisdom of God, the world did not know God
through wisdom, it pleased God through the folly of what we preach to save those who believe. For
Jews demand signs and Greeks seek wisdom, but we preach Christ crucified, a stumbling block to
Jews and folly to Gentiles, but to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of
God and the wisdom of God. For the foolishness of God is wiser than men, and the weakness of God
is stronger than men.
I Cor.1:17-25
The cross of Jesus is how He righted the world
Our cross is how we extend His kingdom
Like God, like Believer
“All the kitsch to be found in the Christian life and Christian art arises
from the failure to take it [the humanity of Christ] seriously.”
Hans Urs von Balthasar
Swiss theologian
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.
Isa.53:2b-3
“Now is my soul troubled. And what shall I say? ‘Father, save me from this hour’? But for this purpose I
have come to this hour. Father, glorify your name.” Then a voice came from heaven: “I have glorified it,
and I will glorify it again.” The crowd that stood there and heard it said that it had thundered. Others
said, “An angel has spoken to him.” Jesus answered, “This voice has come for your sake, not mine.
Now is the judgment of this world; now will the ruler of this world be cast out. And I, when I am lifted
up from the earth, will draw all people to myself.” He said this to show by what kind of death he was
going to die.
Jn.12:27-33
The cross was the Messiah’s coronation
When Jesus had spoken these words, he lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, “Father, the hour has
come; glorify your Son that the Son may glorify you
John17:1
God is best expressed and thereby glorified through Jesus’ co-suffering love and
forgiveness and so is true humanity
Now I rejoice in my sufferings for your sake, and in my flesh I am filling up what is lacking in Christ's
afflictions for the sake of his body, that is, the church, of which I became a minister according to the
stewardship from God that was given to me for you, to make the word of God fully known, the mystery
hidden for ages and generations but now revealed to his saints. To them God chose to make known how
great among the Gentiles are the riches of the glory of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of
glory.
Col.1:24-27
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—
heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be
glorified with him.
Rom.8:16-17
To me, though I am the very least of all the saints, this grace was given, to preach to the Gentiles the
unsearchable riches of Christ, and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden
for ages in God, who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God might
now be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. This was according to the
eternal purpose that he has realized in Christ Jesus our Lord, in whom we have boldness and access with
confidence through our faith in him. So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you,
which is your glory.
Eph.3:8-13
For this reason I bow my knees before the Father, from Whom the whole family in the heavens and on
earth is named, asking that He might grant to you in accordance with the riches of His glory that you be
strengthened with power through His Spirit in your inner person so-that Christ may dwell in your hearts
through faith, in-order-that you, having been rooted and founded in love, might be strong-enough to
grasp together-with all the saints what is the width and length and height and depth, and to know the
love of Christ surpassing knowledge, in-order-that you might be filled to all the fullness of God.
Eph.3:14-19 (DLNT)
The infant will play near the cobra’s den,
and the young child will put its hand into the viper’s nest. They will neither harm nor destroy
on all my holy mountain, for the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea. In that day the Root of Jesse will stand as a banner for the peoples; the
nations will rally to him, and his resting place will be glorious.
Isaiah 11:8-10
Symbolism: For the people of ancient Israel the sea came to represent evil and chaos, the dark power.
Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and
there was no longer any sea. I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from
God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne
saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be
his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes.
There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”
He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”
Rev.21:1-5
How did the church become chaplain to the empire and endorse violence?
After routing Maxentius' forces in northern Italy, Constantine approached Rome in October. ... According to
Eusebius, Constantine saw a vision of a cross rather than the letters of Christ. “He saw with his own eyes
the trophy of a cross of light in the heavens, above the sun, and bearing the inscription, CONQUER BY THIS.
Constantine united the empire, made Christianity the religion of the empire
The bride of Christ, the prince of peace, bought into the wisdom of the world
Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness
of wisdom. But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to
the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. For
where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice.
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good
fruits, impartial and sincere. And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
James 3:13-18
For in Christ Jesus neither circumcision nor uncircumcision has any value. The only thing that
counts is faith expressing itself through love.
Gal.5:6 (DLNT)
“Love alone is credible; nothing else can be believed, and nothing else ought to be believed. This
is the achievement, the “work” of faith . . . to believe that there is such a thing as love . . . and
that there is nothing higher or greater than it. . . . The first thing that must strike a non-Christian
about the Christian’s faith is that . . .it is obviously too good to be true: the mystery of being,
revealed as absolute love, condescending to wash his creatures’ feet, and even their souls, taking
upon himself all the confusion of guilt, all the God-directed hatred, all the accusations showered
upon him with cudgels . . . all the mocking hostility . . . in order to pardon his
creature. . . . This is truly too much.”
Hans Urs von Balthasar
The ministry of John the Baptist
He said therefore to the crowds that came out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who
warned you to flee from the wrath to come? Bear fruits in keeping with repentance. And do not begin
to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you, God is able from these stones to
raise up children for Abraham. Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore
that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire.”
And the crowds asked him, “What then shall we do?” And he answered them, “Whoever has two
tunics is to share with him who has none, and whoever has food is to do likewise.” Tax collectors also
came to be baptized and said to him, “Teacher, what shall we do?” And he said to them, “Collect no
more than you are authorized to do.” Soldiers also asked him, “And we, what shall we do?” And he
said to them, “Do not extort money from anyone by threats or by false accusation, and be content
with your wages.”
Luke 3:7-14
Jesus’ first message
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up. And as was his custom, he went to
the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and he stood up to read. And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah
was given to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where it was written,
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
because he has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to the captives
and recovering of sight to the blind,
to set at liberty those who are oppressed,
to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor.”
And he rolled up the scroll and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all in
the synagogue were fixed on him. And he began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been
fulfilled in your hearing.”
Luke 4:16-21
“This is how the church bears prophetic witness to the world: by being a preview of what is to
come.”
Brian Zahnd
When we, the church, live as we’re supposed to do, it is a demonstration of the wisdom and power
of God.
Political partisanship costs the church our prophetic voice. The great promise of every empire is
peace and security, but a promise no empire can deliver.
“Ceaseless preparation for war is not peace.”
Wendell Berry
The true task of the rulers and authorities is to deliver peace, to produce a just, peaceable, and
livable society. This is the kind of peace the prophets called justice and Jesus called abundant life.
“Remember not the former things,
nor consider the things of old.
Behold, I am doing a new thing;
now it springs forth, do you not perceive it?
I will make a way in the wilderness
and rivers in the desert.
The wild beasts will honor me,
the jackals and the ostriches,
for I give water in the wilderness,
rivers in the desert,
to give drink to my chosen people,
the people whom I formed for myself
that they might declare my praise.
“Yet you did not call upon me, O Jacob;
Isaiah 43:18-22a
Now to the One being able to do super-abundantly beyond all of the things which we ask or think according to
the power being at-work in us— to Him be the glory in the church and in Christ Jesus for all generations forever
and ever, amen.
Eph.3:20-21
