It Is Finished
John 19:30
INTRODUCTION:
All seven sayings of Jesus on the cross have a deep and abiding meaning:
1. forgive them;
2. the promise of paradise;
3. behold, thy mother;
4. behold, thy son;
5. why hast thou forsaken me;
6. I thirst;
7. it is finished;
then He bowed His head and died, commending His Spirit unto the Father. Many, many things were thus finished which have to do with us, and the whole world.
THE WORK GIVEN HIM OF THE FATHER TO DO WHILE ON EARTH WAS FINISHED John 17:4
From this we learn:
That a work was given to Him of the Father to do.
John 17:4 (NIV)
4 I have brought you glory on earth by completing the work you gave me to do.
He performed and finished the miraculous works which bore witness to His heavenly Sonship (John 5:36).
HIS SUFFERINGS WERE FINISHED
His life from the cradle to the grave was filled with suffering. He was "a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief." He was "tempted in all points, like as we."
THE PROPHECIES CONCERNING HIMSELF WHICH HE WAS TO FULFILL WERE FINISHED, Luke 24:44
Every prophecy of the Law, prophets, and Psalms must be fulfilled to a jot and tittle (Matt. 5:17, 18).
Every one of them was fulfilled and finished completely in Him (Acts 13:29). All were fulfilled; there was none left for any other to finish.
THE LAW OF MOSES WAS FINISHED, Colossians 2:14-17
He kept every righteous precept of the Law because He was God in the flesh, and was without sin.
Then He went to Calvary and paid the penalty for all who had broken it—death! (Col. 2:14-17).
THE PLAN OF REDEMPTION WAS FINISHED, Hebrews 10:14
The sin question was settled, put away once for all (Heb. 9:26-28; Isa. 53:11). (As at the day of atonement).
The redemptive price has been paid (1 Peter 1:18, 19; Eph. 1:7; Isa. 55:1; Heb. 9:22; "Jesus Paid It All").
The sacrifice of Christ is the last act and offer of mercy and forgiveness from God (Heb. 10:26).
CONCLUSION:
The plan of salvation is finished, all settled at Calvary.
Man has only to accept the finished work of Christ to be saved forever (Heb. 10:14).
