When I was pregnant with my oldest, a friend gave my husband a shirt which said “World’s Greatest Dad,” which he…much to my dismay....wore proudly to church on Father’s day- before our child was even born.
Several years into fatherhood, while my husband is a great dad, I can confidently tell you that he is not- the World’s Greatest Dad!
We all have different experiences with Fathers- and sometimes our past experiences with our earthly Fathers can shape how we view God as our Father.
Even if you had the worlds greatest dad, he is NOTHING compared to God the Father. God is infinitely greater than the best earthly Father.
In Genesis we have spent the year following the life of the founding father’s of God’s chosen people....Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and his 12 sons…
As we come to the end of our study , I don’t think anyone who has gone through the book of Genesis this year, would look at these founding Fathers and describe them as perfect.
They were simply imperfect earthly Fathers....
And, while their stories take place in Genesis- the book of beginnings....before there was Abraham, Isaac, or Jacob....there was The Father…God the Father.
Jesus is the Son which means that in relation to the son God is the Father. Fatherhood is his very essence..it is who he is.
We learn about Him through His creation, His word and His Spirit.
Everything God does stems from the fact that he is first and foremost a Father.
God the Father shows us who He is by what He does.
All of God’s attributes describe who He is as Father.
He is Perfect, Good, Provider, Savior, Present, Protector and so much more.
The more we read God’s word and learn about his character and draw closer to him the more we can understand who he is as our good and perfect Father...
And while our earthly Father’s may fail us, as believers in Christ you have been adopted into a family with a Father who will never let you down…
a Father who longs for relationship with you...
A Father who longs to give you good things so that you can enjoy Him, because that is what a good and perfect Father does.
As children of God: you are apart of God’s family. He is your Father. He wants you. He is with you. And He is for you.
- Do you believe that the Father’s plans for you are good?
How can you consciously and deliberately seek and see God the Father’s personal hand in everything that happens in your life?
Don’t let the experience you had with your earthly Father limit your experience and understanding of God the Father. God the Father has no limitations or weakness or failures.
Galatians 4:4-6
“When the fullness of time had come, God sent forth his Son,” “So that we might receive adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, ‘Abba! Father!’” (Galatians 4:4–6).
- When you go to God in prayer- do you approach God as Father?
How might recognizing and approaching God as Father draw you closer into relationship with him?
God gave us his son to bring us to himself…so in that moment when Jesus saved you-
you were brought into God’s gamily…in that moment, you were brought home to the Father.
