The Danger of Looking Back and The Difficulty of Moving Forward
The Danger of Looking Back and The Difficulty of Moving Forward
Genesis 19 - Insights from reading:
The trauma we experience in our life have a way of crippling our ability to move forward. Lot’s wife has experienced significant trauma.
The marriage was toxic.
The husband Lot, was greedy and full of selfish ambition; and, in the end, he proved himself to be a fearful and desperate man.
He is greed for more resources, and his selfish ambition to be rich by himself - not in partnership with his own family, but Lot wanted his own independent riches.
His selfish ambition is exemplfied when he chooses the territory that looked prosperous; you notice the selfish ambition by the generous attitude of Abraham. Abraham is confident in his GOD, confident in GOD’s provision, GOD’s protection, and GOD’s purpose! So, for him, selfish ambition is just unnecessary, it’s unfruitful.
Example #1:
Voicelessly, the wife sat by and watched her husband argue to separate from Abraham; and to be certain, this decision led to a division in the family, temporary loss of their possessions, as well as the temperary status of being enslaved, due to their inability to fight off opposing forces, by thereself. Voicelessly, Lot’s wife is certainlly traumatized by the poor character and greedy ambition of her husband.
Example #2
To make matters worst, Lot and his wife settled in the land of Sodom; they left the culture of GOD, with Abraham, and fled to a culture of sexually immorality. In this text, Sodom is not. presented as a perverted person, rather, a perverted generation, culture, government and leadership. In the ancient near eastern world, the men led their civilizations - The culture of Sodom was one of sexual immorality.
On one occassion, Lot allowed two angel’s of the Lord to come and stay with him and his family for a night. When the men of the city of Sodom heard about the two angel’s, who appeared as men, these men had the lustful ambition of violating these men, sexually.
And to compound the problem, voicelessly again, Lot’s wife had to sit and watch her husband offer her virgin daughters to these savage men to be used sexually.
