Last week, we were asking the question- Who can ascend the Hill of the Lord?
In other words, who can approach a holy God?
We discussed about our own sinfulness and our need for Christ.
How each of us are unable to approach God because of our sinfulness!
This psalm really is a micro picture of the macro picture of the whole story line of the Bible.
The bible begins with Man and God dwelling together in unbroken fellowship in the Garden of Eden.
Sin enters the World when they transgressed the covenant.
They are barred from entering in as punishment but also for their own safety. Our God is an all consuming fire.
Then the Lord God said, “Behold, the man has become like one of Us, knowing good and evil; and now, he might stretch out his hand, and take also from the tree of life, and eat, and live forever”— therefore the Lord God sent him out from the garden of Eden, to cultivate the ground from which he was taken. So He drove the man out; and at the east of the garden of Eden He stationed the cherubim and the flaming sword which turned every direction to guard the way to the tree of life.
And the question as we take a right out of Eden, is will we ever get back?
Will we ever eat of the tree of life again?
This Psalm answers that question.
The earth is the Lord’s, and all it contains,
The world, and those who dwell in it.
For He has founded it upon the seas
And established it upon the rivers.
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord?
And who may stand in His holy place?
He who has clean hands and a pure heart,
Who has not lifted up his soul to falsehood
And has not sworn deceitfully.
He shall receive a blessing from the Lord
And righteousness from the God of his salvation.
This is the generation of those who seek Him,
Who seek Your face—even Jacob.
Selah.
This Psalm answers the question it poses.
Who may ascend into the hill of the Lord? And who may stand in His holy place?
The answer is the King of Glory.
Look at verse 7.
Lift up your heads, O gates, And be lifted up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in!
The King of Glory can ascend the Hill.
The Psalm poetically described the gates of God as the Ancient Gates.
The Psalmist here says open up the gates.
Open up the ancient doors, There is one can enter. i’m reminded here of Revelation 5- Where they are searching for someone who can open up the scrolls.
And I saw a strong angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the book and to break its seals?”
and one of the elders said to me, “Stop weeping; behold, the Lion that is from the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has overcome so as to open the book and its seven seals.”
In this passage the one who can enter is- the King of Glory
And He identifies him as the King of glory.
He goes on to ask a rhetorical question that he immediately answers.
Who is the King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle.
SO- Who is the one that enters the gates of God?
Who is the one the doors open for?
It is the Lord strong and mighty in battle.
The idea here is that the gates and doors open up for Him as he returns from battle.
He returns as the strong and mighty warrior who conquered His enemies.
So he is welcomed as this Victorious King.
When we think of Jesus, do we picture him this way?
Oftentimes, I think Jesus is pictured as a humble servant. A lamb like figure.
And he is.
But he is also a mighty warrior as well. He is a Lamb who take away the sin of the world, but he is also the Lion who rises victorious over the grave.
He is the King of Glory.
How does a King become glorious?
by conquering His enemies.
He went to the cross as a lamb, and arose victorious as a lion.
The Treasury of David, Volume 1: Psalms 1–26 Exposition
We know the might of Jesus by the battles which he has fought, the victories which he has won over sin, and death, and hell, and we clap our hands as we see him leading captivity captive in the majesty of his strength.
The Psalm repeats itself- Essentially this is a chorus- repeated
Lift up your heads, O gates, And lift them up, O ancient doors, That the King of glory may come in! Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. Selah.
The one who goes into the gates is the:
The King of Glory, The Lord of Hosts, Strong and Mighty- Mighty in Battle.
This King of Glory- Is Jesus.
None of the rulers of this age understood this, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
Then the seventh angel sounded; and there were loud voices in heaven, saying, “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ; and He will reign forever and ever.”
And on His robe and on His thigh He has a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”
And he is the king of glory who has defeated His and our enemies.
And he is the king of glory who has defeated His and our enemies.
and the living One; and I was dead, and behold, I am alive forevermore, and I have the keys of death and of Hades.
but now has been revealed by the appearing of our Savior Christ Jesus, who abolished death and brought life and immortality to light through the gospel,
Therefore, since the children share in flesh and blood, He Himself likewise also partook of the same, that through death He might render powerless him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,
Jesus is our conquering King,
This Psalm is a praise I believe that is fulfilled in the king of Glory Jesus Christ.
I think it is a micro picture of the macro story of all the Bible.
Without Him, we have no hope of entering into the presence of God.
At Calvary.
4 O the love that drew salvation's plan!
O the grace that brought it down to man!
O the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary. [Refrain]
It was a mighty gulf.
None of us are deserving of the grace. If we are saved, it is because spanned the gulf of our sin that separated us and came to us.
But we should also realize the future glory that this psalms directs us to look.
Jesus has arose conqueror over death and sin, but we still live here in the messed up broken and sinful world.
But the King of Glory has promised us something.
“If I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself, that where I am, there you may be also. “And you know the way where I am going.” Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?” Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.
Because he went, WE CAN GO. Because he ascended the Hill, so also will we if we believe in Him.
Will we ever get back to the tree of Life?
Then he showed me a river of the water of life, clear as crystal, coming from the throne of God and of the Lamb, in the middle of its street. On either side of the river was the tree of life, bearing twelve kinds of fruit, yielding its fruit every month; and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. There will no longer be any curse; and the throne of God and of the Lamb will be in it, and His bond-servants will serve Him;
