25. Waiting for the King

Matthew 25:1–13

I. The women—vv. 1–15

A. The story—v. 1. Jesus told a parable, advising us to be ready.

B. The symbols—vv. 2–4.

1. The foolish. They took no extra oil. They thought they had plenty of time to buy extra oil if they ran out.

2. The wise. They took extra oil. They were prepared. Remember, you cannot have too much of God.

C. The sleeping—v. 5. While waiting for the wedding, they all went to sleep. The wise went to sleep prepared; the foolish went unprepared.

II. The waiting—vv. 6–9

A. Preparation—vv. 6–7. The bridegroom was coming so they arose and trimmed their lamps. We must cleanse ourselves from sin, then we will be ready for His return.

B. Pleading—v. 8. The foolish asked the wise to give them some of their oil. The foolish were depending on the wise. You cannot depend on others—you must have a personal relationship with Christ yourself!

C. Personal—v. 9. The wise told the foolish to go and buy oil for themselves. You must live for God yourself—no one can do it for you. While waiting, we must keep busy for the Lord.

III. The wrong—vv. 10–12

A. The problem—v. 10. Notice these sad words, “The door was shut.” The people in Noah’s day had 120 years to prepare (Gen. 6:3). They refused—and the door was shut (cf. Rev. 20:11–15).

B. The plea—v. 11. “Open to us!” The door would not open for them. Today the door to heaven is open. Tomorrow it may be closed.

C. The punishment—v. 12. Notice the words, “I know you not.” Only those who are born-again will enter heaven.

IV. The watching—v. 13

A. Watch your character (2 Cor. 7:1). Each day we develop good or bad habits. You don’t pray for good character, you develop it by daily Christian living.

B. Watch your consecration (Deut. 1:36). Here we see Caleb saying, “I wholly followed the Lord.”

C. Watch your companions (2 Cor. 6:17). You are known by your friends. Your friends will either help or hinder you in living for the Lord.
