1 John 1:5–10 ESV
5 This is the message we have heard from him and proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. 6 If we say we have fellowship with him while we walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin. 8 If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.
v9
We have the prodigal son returning to the Father and confessing his sin. Now he was back in fellowship and receiving the blessings as a result.
It is important that we have a good relationship with God and there are many ways to ensure this happens and today we are looking at one aspect and that is 1 John 1.9
As part of the Salvation course we have already covered the fact that Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. There is no more penalty for sin as the penalty has already been paid by Jesus. This means that no matter if we sin that sin has been dealt with at the cross. We have no penance to make. We cannot improve our standing before God but something does happen to us when we sin. We break our fellowship with God. Now fellowship means to ‘have in common’. God is sinless and we are sinful. But by the blood of Jesus we are made pure. However God cannot bear sin and hates it and when we commit it so that we are no longer able to communicate with God on open channels. We have decided that our way is best and until we come back to the point where we have strayed off the path and come back to God we will find fellowship with God nigh impossible. This brings in a verse from Amos 3.3 Can two walk together except they be agreed? God does not walk with us if we don’t walk with Him.

A Christian can live carnally.
