Introduction:

Introduce and Show “Raptors” Video Clip
This “trailer” is a complete misrepresentation of the actual movies it previews, other than dinosaurs being included.
Not a Documentary but a Thriller.
The main characters, which are human in every movie, are non-existent in the “trailer.”
This is often the mistake we make with Revelation.
Consider the way pop-culture presents the book.
Some misconceptions to pick off at the beginning:
Revelation vs. Revelations
It’s scary...
Its main objective is to give us a roadmap for how the end will go.
Revelation is written by Jesus about Jesus for the glory of Jesus.

Text: Revelation 1:1-3

The Revelation of Jesus Christ
Revelation
Apocalypse: “Unveiling,” Pulling the cover back and exposing reality.
Apocalypse does also carry with it the connotation of final things.
Also called a prophecy in verse 3.
Foretelling & Forth-telling
A biblical word on the nature of prophecy: a lamp in the darkness.
2 Peter 1:19 ESV
And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed, to which you will do well to pay attention as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts,
Plenary objective: both from and about Jesus
Which God gave Him: God is the source of this information.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ, then, is a God’s Eye picture of reality.
Mediated to the servant John, through an angel.
The apostle John
Angel - a spiritual being who’s primary purpose (at least here) is to be God’s messenger.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ presents a spiritual way of looking at reality that transcends our physical reality.
For the servants
His servant, John himself, is included among this lot.
All the saints throughout space ant time.
You and me.
The Revelation of Jesus Christ reminds the church of its hero’s inevitable victory so that it might hold fast through inevitable difficulties.
The 1st Beatitude of Revelation
1 of 7… go figure
You’re blessed today!
Like many letters, Revelation was meant to be read aloud, likely amongst the seven churches of Asia Minor mentioned in the letter.
For the time is near.
But this was like nearly 2,000 years ago?
The three audiences of Revelation
The immediate context - 7 church in Asia Minor dealing with Roman persecution
Every church generation since then.
The final church generation.
