Learning from a man called Moses
Learning from a man called Moses
Moses was considered to be a very humble man. Being humble is really the ability to admit that you are not all knowing; being able to admit when you need help. Today I humble myself before you and God; I need help. I am not all knowing. I believe that we are in the wilderness journey. We may not all be in the same journey experience but we all have something that we need to journey through.
One of the things we often need to learn is our self-pity. What we can learn is that at times we get so focused on our needs and desires and become overwhelmed. Elijah was guilty of this self-pity in 1 Kings 19:10 read 19:10-18 IN this passage Elijah is depressed because the enemy has stood against him and many seek his life. Elijah turns inward with self-pity actually asking that God take his life. Elijah feels that he has no one who cares. God tells Elijah that there are 70,000 others who have not given into the evil one. Elijah would not allow himself to see his help because of his self-pity. Self-pity says “no one cares” what God is telling you today if you will hear him, is “that’s not true”.
Another area is “pride”. We sometimes think I can do this on my own. If I do it myself I won’t be in this wilderness for long. This can make our journey a lonely place. God did not design creation to be alone. If pride causes you to be alone it is possible to be caught up in a cycle that will not let you escape to make a way into paradise. Paradise is a state of peace. We cannot find peace when pride gets in our way. We will circle around in the wilderness journey pushing people away and never admitting that we are alone.
False humility is another area where we can get caught up in the wilderness and not ask for help. People will reach out to us with sympathy and we respond with “o I am okay”, “others are worse than I am”. When we are confronted with the very people who want to join us in the wilderness journey we don’t want others to think we cannot handle it on our own and so we respond with a no thanks, “I’m okay”.
The final point I want to make today is false spirituality-when you feel that because you have God you do not need anyone else. Paul was a man with great spiritual strength and passion for the Lord, but in his final days he cried out to his brother in Christ; Timothy. In Timothy Paul sought a face which would encourage him to stay firm in his passion. Paul sought someone to encourage him through the death that he was about to endure.
Jesus took three disciples with him when he prayed in the garden. We need people because God created us to have companionship. Adam had God, but God understood that Adam needed someone to live life with.
What should we take home with us today?
God created us to live in peace with each other. To live and to forgive.
We all have our wilderness that we are dealing with, or not dealing with.
We are not promised tomorrow.
