Mothers Day Sermon Eph 6:2

Notes
Transcript
Honoring our Mothers.
The commandment to “honor your father and your mother” appears often in the Bible. (Exodus 20:12; Deuteronomy 5:16; Matthew 15:4; Ephesians 6:2, 3)
We often ask what a woman wants? How about asking what a mother wants?
Its my belief that every mother wants the best for their child. As distorted as this world is i still want to believe that. As we see more often than we want to mothers saying good bye to their children because of untimely death due to violence.
A typical mother carries a baby for 40 weeks. During that time a bond is created. A love that normally cant be separated. Its a strong bond. Its a mother that knows their child the best. Not discounting fathers but its a a mother’s bond that is undeniable.
We are to honor our fathers and mothers. I wonder if its tied to Exodus 20:12 when Moses gave the Children of Israel the 10 commandments. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you. In Leviticus 19 its tied to holiness You shall be holy, for I the LORD your God am holy. 3 Every one of you shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths. (Le 19:2–3). I am the LORD your God.
Jesus makes even clearer. And why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? 4 For God commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother,’ and, ‘Whoever reviles father or mother must surely die.’ (Mt 15:3–4). Jesus was criticizing the religious elite. The held traditions higher than God’s word or distorting God’s word to keep from taking care of your parents. Jesus reminds them of what we heard in our Sunday School lesson:
So for the sake of your tradition you have made void the word of God. 7 You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, when he said:
8  “ ‘This people honors me with their lips,
but their heart is far from me;
9  in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.’ ”
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version. (2016). (Mt 15:6–9). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.
This word Honor means HONOR Good reputation, respect, purity, integrity. To the ancient world, the concept of honor was frequently linked to one’s tangible possessions. Later, the word acquired the strong ethical nature we now associate with it.
Plato was among the earliest to establish the personal moral element of honor, what he called “inward honor.” The distinctions accorded a man by the world—“outward honors”—were not of the same value as a virtuous person’s inner worth.
The Romans as well as the Greeks placed great emphasis on the indispensable role of honor in an individual’s life. Only in the Bible, however, do we gain a true perspective on honor. The OT required children to honor their parents (Ex 20:12), a command that reappears in the ethic of the NT (Eph 6:1–2). Undergirding such action is an even more basic obligation: the giving of honor to God, who worthily merits our devoted obedience. For the Bible says
Worthy are you, our Lord and God,
to receive glory and honor and power,
for you created all things,
and by your will they existed and were created.” (Re 4:11).
Honor the LORD with your wealth
and with the firstfruits of all your produce;
10  then your barns will be filled with plenty,
and your vats will be bursting with wine. (Pr 3:9–10).
We forget that we honor our mothers when we cause them to be proud of us. I remember growing up being warned not to embarrass my mother. a Today a mother has awesome responsibilities.
During this pandemic it was mostly mothers who ha to become Nurse counselor, instructor and principle
It involves four key actions.
Appreciate them. You honor your father and mother when you are thankful for all they have done for you. You can show your appreciation by valuing their guidance. (Proverbs 7:1, 2; 23:26) My son, keep my words
and treasure up my commandments with you;
2  keep my commandments and live;
keep my teaching as the apple of your eye; (Pr 7:1–2).
My son, give me your heart,
and let your eyes observe my ways. (Pr 23:26).
The Bible encourages you to view your parents as your “glory,” that is, to be proud of them.—Proverbs 17:6. Grandchildren are the crown of the aged, and the glory of children is their fathers. (Pr 17:6).
Accept their authority. Especially while you are young, you honor your father and mother when you recognize the authority God has given them. Colossians 3:20 tells young ones: “Be obedient to your parents in everything, for this is well-pleasing to the Lord.” Even young Jesus willingly obeyed his parents.—Luke 2:51. 51 And he went down with them and came to Nazareth and was submissive to them. And his mother treasured up all these things in her heart. 52 And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man. (Lk 2:51–52).
Treat them with respect. (Leviticus 19:3; Hebrews 12:9) Besides this, we have had earthly fathers who disciplined us and we respected them. Shall we not much more be subject to the Father of spirits and live? (Heb 12:9). This often involves what you say and how you say it. True, some parents at times act in ways that make it hard to respect them. Even then, children can honor their parents by avoiding disrespectful speech and actions. (Proverbs 30:17) The eye that mocks a father
and scorns to obey a mother will be picked out by the ravens of the valley and eaten by the vultures. (Pr 30:17). The Bible teaches that speaking abusively of one’s father or mother is a serious offense.—Matthew 15:4.
Provide for them. When your parents get old, they may need practical support. You can honor them by trying your best to make sure that they have what they need. (1 Timothy 5:4, 8) 3 Honor widows who are truly widows. 4 But if a widow has children or grandchildren, let them first learn to show godliness to their own household and to make some return to their parents, for this is pleasing in the sight of God. (1 Ti 5:3–4). Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles.For instance, shortly before he died, Jesus arranged for the care of his mother.—John 19:25-27. 26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!” 27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home. (Jn 19:26–27). Yes Jesus honored his own mother. WHile he was yet dying for our sins he looked down and gave instruction to John to care for his Mother.
