Mothers Day
This morning As we gather together we are here to celebrate mothers
Often times when you come to church on Mother’s Day it is oh how great mothers are and then when you come back for Fathers Day it is oh how horrible you are
Well I will be on vacation for Fathers Day and Matt Narsh will be preaching so you wont want to miss that
But as I prayed for what to preach this morning
I thought we were just going to celebrate mothers and then actually not preach on mothers
But God had another idea
This morning as we look to mothers, it is important to note that as you look through scripture you don’t see a lot of scripture just for mothers
Moms don’t think you get off the hook, there is a lot that is there for you to begin to apply it to your life and I want to encourage you to be women of scripture
To open up your Bibles and be reading them
Help lead your kids in reading their Bibles!
Help Lead your kids to Christ!
With that in mind, I was drawn to a sermon we did a few years ago, and we are using some of that maybe not all of it
I encouraged you to do 2 things so far
Open your Bible and read it
Then Help lead your children in reading their Bibles
Moms you are to be a helper
Genesis 2:18–22 NASB95
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone; I will make him a helper suitable for him.” 19 Out of the ground the Lord God formed every beast of the field and every bird of the sky, and brought them to the man to see what he would call them; and whatever the man called a living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all the cattle, and to the birds of the sky, and to every beast of the field, but for Adam there was not found a helper suitable for him. 21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; then He took one of his ribs and closed up the flesh at that place. 22 The Lord God fashioned into a woman the rib which He had taken from the man, and brought her to the man.
God noticed that man
It was not good for Man to be alone
So God took it upon himself to find a suitable helper and after not finding one
God then took it upon himself to make a suitable helper
Moms you are to be a suitable helper in your families
Now some of you may ask what does that look like and I am so glad you asked
I believe Proverbs 31 gives us to insight into what a suitable helper looks like
Are you being a suitable helper to your husband in raising your kids?
Proverbs 31:10–27 NASB95
10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels. 11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. 12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life. 13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight. 14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. 15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong. 18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night. 19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands grasp the spindle. 20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy. 21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet. 22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple. 23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits among the elders of the land. 24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And supplies belts to the tradesmen. 25 Strength and dignity are her clothing, And she smiles at the future. 26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue. 27 She looks well to the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Proverbs 31:10 NASB95
10 An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above jewels.
you moms that adhere to scripture, and that are suitable helpers, and run after God are rare it says, and worth more than you will every know!
This is exactly what we should be doing mothers
Proverbs 31:12 NASB95
12 She does him good and not evil All the days of her life.
moms, you need to be doing good to your husbands, and not evil, when you are angry with your husbands or your children, do not repay evil for evil, but do good for them
Moms that means when you husbands, or fathers of your children you should not be bad mouthing them, even when we think it feels good
Moms might I encourage you to not say anything if you don’t have anything nice to say at all
It is more than words
Proverbs 31:13–17 NASB95
13 She looks for wool and flax And works with her hands in delight. 14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar. 15 She rises also while it is still night And gives food to her household And portions to her maidens. 16 She considers a field and buys it; From her earnings she plants a vineyard. 17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong.
moms are you working to provide for your families, are you helping your husband provide for you families
don’t think strictly in the sense of bringing in the bacon, but are you helping your husband be a good steward of your families finances, are you protecting and preparing your family, are you willing to work to provide for your family
Rather then possibly fighting with your husband, or father of your children, are you looking out for your children?
That is what it is to provide for your families
And sometimes that means making difficult hard decision
Proverbs 31:21 NASB95
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
mom not only should you provide for your family but are you caring for them, and moms we are grateful that you do take care of us
Moms we appreciate that you care for us
Proverbs 31:26 NASB95
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the teaching of kindness is on her tongue.
mom maybe the most important part of these part of scripture, but are you teaching your family, I have heard one of the most important things as a parent you can do, and it's fitting for mothers day, but let your children and even your husband catch you reading your Bible, as we are doing a self check, think of when you read your Bible, are you able to be caught?
if you are not reading your Bible then i would suggest you start, because you and I know raising kids is not easy and you need a manual as you raise them, you also want to pass on to your children as their mother the need and desire for reading the scripture
Moms I want to encourage you, continue to seek the lord as you help and raise your families, I also want to encourage you in your marriage to your husbands
I do have to credit this next piece of advice from a sermon I heard a while back
Proverbs 22:6 NASB95
6 Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not depart from it.
Moms this not all on you
But since it is mothers day and we are talking about mother we want to shine the light on you
So moms
This is it
This is what we are to be doing moms
Again this is not all on you but you have a part of this
Your part is just as important and it is your responsibility to HELP your childs father, your husbands to do just this
It is how you help
Proverbs 31 gives us something to look at how you as mothers can begin to help
CLOSING
as we call the band up
If you are here this morning and do not have a personal relationship with Christ
I would invite you to the front to meet with someone who can open up the Bible and show you how Jesus died for your sins, and how he arose from the grave
how to accept that free gift of salvation that is only through Jesus you need to repent and believe
Or maybe you are here this morning and simply need prayer
Or moms if you are here and have need to pray for your family, or maybe you need to repent
the altar is open
