1. Promise of Rest in Eden
Although the word “Sabbath” does not appear in the first book of the bible, we see that God Rested on 7th Day setting the example for his people
(Genesis 2:1-3)

Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done. 3 So God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it God rested from all his work that he had done in creation

God gave the man and the woman work to do (Fill the earth, Subdue, Excercise Dominion) and then he gave them the example of Rest
While the text doesn’t explicitly say that God commanded them to follow this Work, Rest pattern it seems to imply that this was God’s plan for humanity.... to fulfill their work, and then Rest
We know that Adam and Eve failed to complete the Work they were assigned, they rebelled against God, and humanity spirals in a state of Unrest or Restlessnes (Murder, Strife, ungodly behavior)
Noah is born in the midst of all of this restlessness and wickedness and in Genesis 5:29 His Father Lamech says

and called his name Noah, saying, “Out of the ground that the LORD has cursed, this one shall bring us relief from our work and from the painful toil of our hands.”

And God did chose Noah and His family to enter into the ark and be saved from the wrath of God towards all the wickedness and rampant evil that had filled the earth...
When Noah comes out of the ark he is given a similar command as Adam (be Fruitful, subdue, exercise dominion)
The Work was the same.... but sin was still present in the world and in Noah.
Noah sinned, drinking of the Fruit of the vine, so much so that he became drunk (much like the fruit that Adam and Eve chose to eat) and it led to his nakedness and shame too.
Abraham came not long after, and this time, God said “I will multiply you” and “I will give you a good land to posses”
2. Reminder of Rest in the Wilderness
God kept his promise to Abraham and Greatly multiplied his descendants
Isacc, Jacob, Joseph and his Brothers ....and eventually the Nation of Isreal is enslaved in Egypt…
and Moses is chosen by God to lead His people out of Egypt, and the First mention of the Word Sabbath comes not long after deliverence from slavery.
The people complained to God about hunger and He rained down Manna from the heavens, and he gave them instructions regarding the Manna
(Explain what God commanded)

Morning by morning they gathered it, each as much as he could eat; but when the sun grew hot, it melted.

22 On the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers each. And when all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses, 23 he said to them, “This is what the LORD has commanded: ‘Tomorrow is a day of solemn rest, a holy Sabbath to the LORD; bake what you will bake and boil what you will boil, and all that is left over lay aside to be kept till the morning.’ ” 24 So they laid it aside till the morning, as Moses commanded them, and it did not stink, and there were no worms in it. 25 Moses said, “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to the LORD; today you will not find it in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, which is a Sabbath, there will be none.”

27 On the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, but they found none. 28 And the LORD said to Moses, “How long will you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! The LORD has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Remain each of you in his place; let no one go out of his place on the seventh day.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day.

So God was giving these instructions to his people as a Test (16 Vs. 4 “…That I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not”)
Not long later, when the Isrealites come to Mount Sinai They receive the Ten Commandments ...... if you grew up in the church this is probably what you think of when you hear the word Sabbath
The Fourth Commandment (Exodus 20:8-11 & Deuteronomy 5:12-15) This command comes only after Israel has been redeemed from Egypt. **Rest is tied directly to redemption from slavery.** Because God saved them, they are able to enjoy rest.

Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

‘Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the LORD your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. 15 You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the LORD your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the LORD your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day.

I love how Nancy Guthrie says (pg 99) “Sabbath keeping would set God’s people apart as being so well taken care of by their God that they could take a day of rest.”
having come from Slavery (likely working 7days /week for their slave master) Sabbath rest from God and For God (Holy to the Lord) must have been seen as a gracious gift!
and their children, servants and even livestock would get to enjoy this gift of rest.
the Sabbath also served as a Sign of the Covenant (Exodus 31:12-17) This seventh day is a sign of their covenant with God. A continual reminder for themselves and the nations of what God has done for them.

And the LORD said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’ ”

this Pattern of Rest was
The Sabbatical Year (Leviticus 25:1-7 & Leviticus 26:34-35,43) The land itself is granted rest every seventh year and fiftieth year - after 7 seven-year periods. When Israel fails to keep this command, God will give the land rest by exiling the people.

The LORD spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying, 2 “Speak to the people of Israel and say to them, When you come into the land that I give you, the land shall keep a Sabbath to the LORD. 3 For six years you shall sow your field, and for six years you shall prune your vineyard and gather in its fruits, 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of solemn rest for the land, a Sabbath to the LORD. You shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 You shall not reap what grows of itself in your harvest, or gather the grapes of your undressed vine. It shall be a year of solemn rest for the land. 6 The Sabbath of the land shall provide food for you, for yourself and for your male and female slaves and for your hired worker and the sojourner who lives with you, 7 and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land: all its yield shall be for food.

Then the land shall enjoy its Sabbaths as long as it lies desolate, while you are in your enemies’ land; then the land shall rest, and enjoy its Sabbaths. 35 As long as it lies desolate it shall have rest, the rest that it did not have on your Sabbaths when you were dwelling in it.

But the land shall be abandoned by them and enjoy its Sabbaths while it lies desolate without them, and they shall make amends for their iniquity, because they spurned my rules and their soul abhorred my statutes.

3. The Ruin of Rest in Canaan
Sabbath Observance Requires Justice (Isaiah 56:1-2) Keeping the Sabbath was never about a ceremony but about worshipping YHWH exclusively and doing justice.

Thus says the LORD:

“Keep justice, and do righteousness,

for soon my salvation will come,

and my righteousness be revealed.

2  Blessed is the man who does this,

and the son of man who holds it fast,

who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,

and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”

Israel Exiled b/c Failure to Keep Sabbath (Ezekiel 20:10-26) God gives the land seventy years of rest by sending the people away to Babylon. The day of rest prescribed for God’s people in the wilderness pointed them forward in faith to the day when God would lead them into the promised land. When they entered the land however, they worshipped idols and profaned the Sabbath so God exiled them and gave the land 70 years of rest.

So I led them out of the land of Egypt and brought them into the wilderness. 11 I gave them my statutes and made known to them my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live. 12 Moreover, I gave them my Sabbaths, as a sign between me and them, that they might know that I am the LORD who sanctifies them. 13 But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not walk in my statutes but rejected my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; and my Sabbaths they greatly profaned.

“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them in the wilderness, to make a full end of them. 14 But I acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. 15 Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would not bring them into the land that I had given them, a land flowing with milk and honey, the most glorious of all lands, 16 because they rejected my rules and did not walk in my statutes, and profaned my Sabbaths; for their heart went after their idols. 17 Nevertheless, my eye spared them, and I did not destroy them or make a full end of them in the wilderness.

18 “And I said to their children in the wilderness, ‘Do not walk in the statutes of your fathers, nor keep their rules, nor defile yourselves with their idols. 19 I am the LORD your God; walk in my statutes, and be careful to obey my rules, 20 and keep my Sabbaths holy that they may be a sign between me and you, that you may know that I am the LORD your God.’ 21 But the children rebelled against me. They did not walk in my statutes and were not careful to obey my rules, by which, if a person does them, he shall live; they profaned my Sabbaths.

“Then I said I would pour out my wrath upon them and spend my anger against them in the wilderness. 22 But I withheld my hand and acted for the sake of my name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations, in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 Moreover, I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them through the countries, 24 because they had not obeyed my rules, but had rejected my statutes and profaned my Sabbaths, and their eyes were set on their fathers’ idols. 25 Moreover, I gave them statutes that were not good and rules by which they could not have life, 26 and I defiled them through their very gifts in their offering up all their firstborn, that I might devastate them. I did it that they might know that I am the LORD.

Returned Exiles Fail to Keep Sabbath (Nehemiah 13:15-22) Even when they return they still do not keep the Sabbath properly.

In those days I saw in Judah people treading winepresses on the Sabbath, and bringing in heaps of grain and loading them on donkeys, and also wine, grapes, figs, and all kinds of loads, which they brought into Jerusalem on the Sabbath day. And I warned them on the day when they sold food. 16 Tyrians also, who lived in the city, brought in fish and all kinds of goods and sold them on the Sabbath to the people of Judah, in Jerusalem itself! 17 Then I confronted the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil thing that you are doing, profaning the Sabbath day? 18 Did not your fathers act in this way, and did not our God bring all this disaster on us and on this city? Now you are bringing more wrath on Israel by profaning the Sabbath.”

19 As soon as it began to grow dark at the gates of Jerusalem before the Sabbath, I commanded that the doors should be shut and gave orders that they should not be opened until after the Sabbath. And I stationed some of my servants at the gates, that no load might be brought in on the Sabbath day. 20 Then the merchants and sellers of all kinds of wares lodged outside Jerusalem once or twice. 21 But I warned them and said to them, “Why do you lodge outside the wall? If you do so again, I will lay hands on you.” From that time on they did not come on the Sabbath. 22 Then I commanded the Levites that they should purify themselves and come and guard the gates, to keep the Sabbath day holy. Remember this also in my favor, O my God, and spare me according to the greatness of your steadfast love.

4. The Revelation of Rest in Jesus
Jesus Offers True Rest (Matt. 11:28-30) The rest that the Sabbath pointed to is found only by coming to Jesus in faith.

28 Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.”

Jesus is Lord of Sabbath (Luke 6:1-11; Mark 2:23-28; Matthew 12:1-8) Pharisees try to hold Jesus to the letter of the law (which wasn’t really in the Law at all) and Jesus shows that they don’t know how to read the OT by pointing to David in 1 Sam. 21:1-6. It was never about the letter of the law! It was about honoring God and having faith in Him alone.

On a Sabbath, while he was going through the grainfields, his disciples plucked and ate some heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. 2 But some of the Pharisees said, “Why are you doing what is not lawful to do on the Sabbath?” 3 And Jesus answered them, “Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him: 4 how he entered the house of God and took and ate the bread of the Presence, which is not lawful for any but the priests to eat, and also gave it to those with him?” 5 And he said to them, “The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath.”

A Man with a Withered Hand

6 On another Sabbath, he entered the synagogue and was teaching, and a man was there whose right hand was withered. 7 And the scribes and the Pharisees watched him, to see whether he would heal on the Sabbath, so that they might find a reason to accuse him. 8 But he knew their thoughts, and he said to the man with the withered hand, “Come and stand here.” And he rose and stood there. 9 And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful on the Sabbath to do good or to do harm, to save life or to destroy it?” 10 And after looking around at them all he said to him, “Stretch out your hand.” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they were filled with fury and discussed with one another what they might do to Jesus.

Jesus Accomplishes All the Work (John 5:17; 17:4)

But Jesus answered them, “My Father is working until now, and I am working.”

I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work that you gave me to do.

4. The Rest that Remains
God’s Rest is Found Only in Jesus (Hebrews 4:1-11) The Israelites in the wilderness never truly entered God’s rest - the Promised Land - because of their unbelief. God’s rest is made available to all who believe in Jesus.

Therefore, while the promise of entering his rest still stands, let us fear lest any of you should seem to have failed to reach it. 2 For good news came to us just as to them, but the message they heard did not benefit them, because they were not united by faith with those who listened. 3 For we who have believed enter that rest, as he has said,

“As I swore in my wrath,

‘They shall not enter my rest,’ ”

although his works were finished from the foundation of the world. 4 For he has somewhere spoken of the seventh day in this way: “And God rested on the seventh day from all his works.” 5 And again in this passage he said,

“They shall not enter my rest.”

6 Since therefore it remains for some to enter it, and those who formerly received the good news failed to enter because of disobedience, 7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted,

“Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts.”

8 For if Joshua had given them rest, God would not have spoken of another day later on. 9 So then, there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God, 10 for whoever has entered God’s rest has also rested from his works as God did from his.

11 Let us therefore strive to enter that rest, so that no one may fall by the same sort of disobedience.

For Christians today we can enter the rest that Jesus has provided through his life, death, and resurrection. The command for us is to believe in Jesus and thus enter into His rest by faith.
