As you guys know we have been studying through the different names and titles given Jesus. I hope this study has help you all grow closer to your Savior with such. Today we are going to focus on the names given Jesus in Revelation 1:8. Let’s read that now.
8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
Here we see Jesus is the “Almighty Alpha & Omega.” This reality demonstrates two specific facts I want us to consider today. First, with Jesus being the Almighty Alpha & Omega this lets us know that Jesus “transcends time.” In other words, Jesus is not constrained by time like we are. Remember the words of Peter in 2 Peter 3:8.
8 But do not overlook this one fact, beloved, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day.
Or the words of God through Isaiah in Isaiah 46:9-10.
9 remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is no other; I am God, and there is none like me, 10 declaring the end from the beginning and from ancient times things not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will accomplish all my purpose,’
As we can see God, which Jesus most definitely is John 1:1, transcends time but why is that relevant for you and I? It is relevant for us to know because it reminds us that Jesus, no matter what, when, or where we are Jesus is there with us. Jesus was there when the universe and all that is in it was created (Colossians 1:16) and he is there watching over all the faithful all the time (Matthew 28:20). Jesus being the Almighty Alpha & Omega secondly points to the comforting reality that his qualities transcend time as well. What do I mean by that? Jesus’ love, for example, is eternal.
34 Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good; for his steadfast love endures forever!
Jesus’ faithfulness is eternal.
5 For the Lord is good; his steadfast love endures forever, and his faithfulness to all generations.
Jesus’ righteousness is eternal.
3 Full of splendor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever.
In other words, for you and I, we can take comfort that Jesus is always loving, always faithful, and always righteous or as the Hebrew writer put it…
5 Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” 6 So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper; I will not fear; what can man do to me?”
