The “god” of this generation is a helpless … being who commands the respect of no really thoughtful man. He no more resembles the Supreme Sovereign of Holy Writ, than does the dim flickering of a candle, the glory of the midday sun! — A.W. Pink
“It often appears that preachers are busy attempting to reinterpret certain passages to protect people from just such an encounter, reducing God to a more manageable, cosmic elected official.”

God, The Great King

Malachi 1:14 ESV
14 Cursed be the cheat who has a male in his flock, and vows it, and yet sacrifices to the Lord what is blemished. For I am a great King, says the Lord of hosts, and my name will be feared among the nations.

What is it to be sovereign?

Omnipotence refers to God being unlimited in His actions because of His ability.
Sovereignty refers to God being unlimited in His actions because of His moral right.
Sovereignty means that God possesses and continually exercises the sole right to do all His pleasure with all His creation, without explanation or successful interference.

1. God’s rule is unique because sovereignty is essential to His person.

2. God’s sovereignty is unique because it is self-existing and independent.

Psalm 103:19 ESV
19 The Lord has established his throne in the heavens, and his kingdom rules over all.
1 Timothy 6:15–16 ESV
15 which he will display at the proper time—he who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality, who dwells in unapproachable light, whom no one has ever seen or can see. To him be honor and eternal dominion. Amen.

3. God’s sovereignty is unique because it is eternal and enduring.

Daniel 7:13–14 ESV
13 “I saw in the night visions, and behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. 14 And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed.
Isaiah 40:23–25 ESV
23 who brings princes to nothing, and makes the rulers of the earth as emptiness. 24 Scarcely are they planted, scarcely sown, scarcely has their stem taken root in the earth, when he blows on them, and they wither, and the tempest carries them off like stubble. 25 To whom then will you compare me, that I should be like him? says the Holy One.
Psalm 93:1–2 ESV
1 The Lord reigns; he is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; he has put on strength as his belt. Yes, the world is established; it shall never be moved. 2 Your throne is established from of old; you are from everlasting.

God is the Best of Kings

1. God is the best of kings, having created all that He presently rules.

Colossians 1:16 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.

2. God is the best of kings, sustaining all He rules.

Colossians 1:17 ESV
17 And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

3. God is the best of kings, and the vastness of His realm includes all places and persons.

Consider WHERE He rules
Consider OVER WHOM He rules

4. God is the best of kings, being the reason for all things and persons.

Colossians 1:16 ESV
16 For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him.
Romans 11:36 ESV
36 For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be glory forever. Amen.
Revelation 4:11 ESV
11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”

5. God is the best of kings, possessing every perfection desirable in a ruler.

“Just because a person has the ability to rule does not mean he has the right. Just because a person has the right to rule does not mean he has the ability. In God, all the perfections of greatness and goodness are combined.”
If there be a God, a “King, eternal, immortal, and invisible,” he cannot but be sovereign, and he cannot but do according to his own will, and choose according to his own purpose. You may dislike these doctrines, but you can only get quit of them by denying altogether the existence of an infinitely wise, glorious, and powerful Being. God would not be God were he not thus absolutely sovereign, in his present doings and his eternal pre-arrangements. —Horatius Bonar
