satan’s Lies Concerning The Holy Spirit
Wonderful news: Every Christian lives daily with the Holy Spirit with them and in them.
The moment a person repentance of sin the HS takes up residence in our lives.
Understanding this is the knowledge that changes our faith and our way of approaching life.
John 20:22 - Then he breathed on them and said, “Receive the Holy Spirit.
The first HS baptism happens at salvation. Then Jesus promises another HS baptism - The Baptism in the Holy Spirit
Baptisms purrpose is two fold:
To give power for witnessing To speak with tongues - supernatural prayer language
13 Now when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, and perceived that they were uneducated and untrained men, they marveled. And they realized that they had been with Jesus.
The New King James Version. (1982). (Ac 4:13). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
46 Then Paul and Barnabas grew bold and said, “It was necessary that the word of God should be spoken to you first; but since you reject it, and judge yourselves unworthy of everlasting life, behold, we turn to the Gentiles. 47 For so the Lord has commanded us:
The New King James Version. (1982). (Ac 13:46–47). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
And when they had prayed, the place where they were assembled together was shaken; and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit, and they spoke the word of God with boldness.
The New King James Version. (1982). (Ac 4:31). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
Why is there such controversy concerning the Holy Spirit? Why does satan try so hard to keep believers from being filled with the Holy Spirit?
satan’s tries first to keep us forming believing in Christ and repenting from sin.
When that fails he tries to keep us from living the full life in the Holy Spirit.
“Those in whom the Spirit comes to live are God's new Temple. They are, individually and corporately, places where heaven and earth meet.”
N.T. Wright,
Without the Spirit of God, we can do nothing. We are as ships without wind. We are useless.
Charles Spurgeon
First, WHY DO WE NEED THE HOLY SPIRIT?
1.Because Jesus needed Him: Jesus begins His public ministry
Luke 3:22 - and the Holy Spirit, in bodily form, descended on him like a dove. And a voice from heaven said, “You are my dearly loved Son, and you bring me great joy.”
Luke 4:14 -Then Jesus returned to Galilee, filled with the Holy Spirit’s power. Reports about him spread quickly through the whole region.
There are many verses stating that Jesus was led by the HS
Jesus in His humanity depended on the Holy Spirits power just like we do today.
If the Son of God needed the Baptism of the HS how much more do we
2. Because the early church needed Him:
The Christian will continually be facing the forces of satan and darkness. To overcome we will need a power greater than those that oppose us.
Luke 24:49 “And now I will send the Holy Spirit, just as my Father promised. But stay here in the city until the Holy Spirit comes and fills you with power from heaven.”
Trying to do the Lord's work in your own strength is the most confusing, exhausting, and tedious of all work. But when you are filled with the Holy Spirit, then the ministry of Jesus just flows out of you.
Corrie Ten Boom
3. Because Jesus said we need Him:
John 16:7 -But I tell you that I am going to do what is best for you. That is why I am going away. The Holy Spirit cannot come to help you until I leave. But after I am gone, I will send the Spirit to you.
Acts 1:4-5- And while they were gathered together,a He commanded them: “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift the Father promised, which you have heard Me discuss. 5For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.b”
The work of the Spirit is to impart life, to implant hope, to give liberty, to testify of Christ, to guide us into all truth, to teach us all things, to comfort the believer, and to convict the world of sin.
Dwight L. Moody
4. We need the Holy Spirit to understand Spiritual Things:
1 Cor 2:6-14
“No eye has seen,
no ear has heard,
no heart has imagined,
what God has prepared for those who love Him.”b
10But God has revealed it to us by the Spirit.
The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11For who among men knows the thoughts of man except his own spirit within him? So too, no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12We have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us. 13And this is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom, but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.c
14The natural man does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God. For they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. 15The spiritual man judges all things, but he himself is not subject to anyone’s judgment. 16“For who has known the mind of the Lord, so as to instruct Him?”d But we have the mind of Christ.
“When you strip it of everything else, Pentecost stands for power and life. That's what came into the church when the Holy Spirit came down on the day of Pentecost.”
david wilkerson,
Secondly, Lies about the Spirits work -
It is something else -
Acts 2:12-13 - Astounded and perplexed, they asked one another, “What does this mean?”
13But others mocked them and said, “They are drunk on new wine!”
2. The HS was only for the disciples. No longer available
Acts 2:17 - ‘In the last days,’ God says, ‘I will pour out my Spirit upon all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy. Your young men will see visions, and your old men will dream dreams.
And as I began to speak, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, as upon us at the beginning. 16 Then I remembered the word of the Lord, how He said, ‘John indeed baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit.’ 17 If therefore God gave them the same gift as He gave us when we believed on the Lord Jesus Christ, who was I that I could withstand God?”
The New King James Version. (1982). (Ac 11:15–17). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
Read Acts 19 - 25 years after the day of pentecost.
3.The Spirits work and tongues is of the devil. -
Luke 11:15 - but some of them said, “No wonder he can cast out demons. He gets his power from Satan, the prince of demons.”
Satan lies to us about the Holy Spirit because:
And these signs shall follow them that believe; in my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues; they shall take up serpents; and if they drink any deadly thing, it shall not hurt them; they shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover.” – Mark 16: 17-18
Conclusion:
Ordinary balloon vs hot air balloon
Gal 3:1-3 -O foolish Galatians! Who has bewitched you? Before your very eyes Jesus Christ was clearly portrayed as crucified. 2I would like to learn just one thing from you: Did you receive the Spirit by works of the law, or by hearing with faith?
3Are you so foolish? After starting in the Spirit, are you now finishing in the flesh? 4Have you suffered so much for nothing, if it really was for nothing? 5Does God lavish His Spirit on you and work miracles among you because you practice the law, or because you hear and believe?
Acts 2:38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. 39 For the promise is to you and to your children, and to all who are afar off, as many as the Lord our God will call.”
The New King James Version. (1982). (Ac 2:38–39). Nashville: Thomas Nelson.
