1. Work out your own salvation. Philippians 2:12–13
Philippians 2:12–13 NKJV
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.
a. As you have obeyed. Philippians 2:8
Philippians 2:8 NKJV
And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.
i. Obedience=faith=devotion
b. Paul is not introducing doubt.
i. Therefore,
1. Because our conduct should be worthy of the gospel (1:27),
2. Because we have been granted to believe and suffer for Christ (1:29),
3. Because of what Christ has done for us, and because we have received love, mercy, and the affection and fellowship of God’s Spirit (2:1-2),
4. Because Christ humbled Himself for us and took on the form of a servant and died in our place (2:5-8),
5. Because the Father has and will continue to exalt the name of Christ above every other name (2:9-11),
6. Get to work living for God!
c. God is working in you. 1 Peter 1:3–9
1 Peter 1:3–9 NKJV
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to His abundant mercy has begotten us again to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, to an inheritance incorruptible and undefiled and that does not fade away, reserved in heaven for you, who are kept by the power of God through faith for salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
2. Shine the Light! Philippians 2:14–16
Philippians 2:14–16 NKJV
Do all things without complaining and disputing, that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world, holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
a. Don’t be a whiner. Philippians 2:14; 1 Timothy 6:6
Philippians 2:14 NKJV
Do all things without complaining and disputing,
1 Timothy 6:6 NKJV
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.
b. Don’t be a wimp. Philippians 2:15, 1 Peter 4:12–14
Philippians 2:15 NKJV
that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world,
1 Peter 4:12–14 NKJV
Beloved, do not think it strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened to you; but rejoice to the extent that you partake of Christ’s sufferings, that when His glory is revealed, you may also be glad with exceeding joy. If you are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed are you, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you. On their part He is blasphemed, but on your part He is glorified.
c. Don’t be a quitter. Philippians 2:16 James 1:12
Philippians 2:16 NKJV
holding fast the word of life, so that I may rejoice in the day of Christ that I have not run in vain or labored in vain.
James 1:12 NKJV
Blessed is the man who endures temptation; for when he has been approved, he will receive the crown of life which the Lord has promised to those who love Him.
i. Here Paul introduces doubt.
3. Be prepared to live as a sacrifice. Philippians 2:17–18
Philippians 2:17–18 NKJV
Yes, and if I am being poured out as a drink offering on the sacrifice and service of your faith, I am glad and rejoice with you all. For the same reason you also be glad and rejoice with me.
a. This is our calling! James 5:19-20
James 5:19–20 NKJV
Brethren, if anyone among you wanders from the truth, and someone turns him back, let him know that he who turns a sinner from the error of his way will save a soul from death and cover a multitude of sins.
b. This is our joy! 1 Peter 1:6–9
1 Peter 1:6–9 NKJV
In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ, whom having not seen you love. Though now you do not see Him, yet believing, you rejoice with joy inexpressible and full of glory, receiving the end of your faith—the salvation of your souls.
