Now the Lord said to Samuel, “You have mourned long enough for Saul. I have rejected him as king of Israel, so fill your flask with olive oil and go to Bethlehem. Find a man named Jesse who lives there, for I have selected one of his sons to be my king.”
But Samuel asked, “How can I do that? If Saul hears about it, he will kill me.”
“Take a heifer with you,” the Lord replied, “and say that you have come to make a sacrifice to the Lord. Invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you which of his sons to anoint for me.”
So Samuel did as the Lord instructed. When he arrived at Bethlehem, the elders of the town came trembling to meet him. “What’s wrong?” they asked. “Do you come in peace?”
“Yes,” Samuel replied. “I have come to sacrifice to the Lord. Purify yourselves and come with me to the sacrifice.” Then Samuel performed the purification rite for Jesse and his sons and invited them to the sacrifice, too.
When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!”
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
Then Jesse told his son Abinadab to step forward and walk in front of Samuel. But Samuel said, “This is not the one the Lord has chosen.” Next Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the Lord has chosen.” In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.” Then Samuel asked, “Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”
“Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
So Jesse sent for him. He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And the Lord said, “This is the one; anoint him.”
So as David stood there among his brothers, Samuel took the flask of olive oil he had brought and anointed David with the oil. And the Spirit of the Lord came powerfully upon David from that day on. Then Samuel returned to Ramah.
From this passage of text .....I would like to use the topic....
It Is for You
My brothers and sisters one thing that I have learned about our God.......is that when He has something in His plans for our life...... it is part of His divine purpose and destiny....for you and I to receive. While others may not see it.......while others may not understand........and while others may not understand the call....that God has for us..... What is for you......is for you. I read a post the other day that said......”It’s okay if others don’t understand your calling, it wasn’t a conference call” ..... It does not matter if you are young or old, rich or poor, educated or not, tall or short, good looking or unattractive, married or divorced.......what God has for you .......is for you.
What I like about God’s ordained plan is.....whatever God had for you.......you don’t have to like to get it, you don’t have to steal to get it, you don’t have to cheat anyone to get it, and you don’t have to beg to get it.......because what God has divinely ordered for your life........ the Lord our God will put it in place to happen. You see what God has for you may not come when you want it to come, it may not come today, next week, next month or maybe not even this year, but know today that what God has for you.......it is for you....and it will come to you in God’s own time.
But in order for you to receive what God has for you, you have to be in the position to receive what God has for you......... and sometimes......God has to prepare you in some way or fashion in order that you are ready to receive what He has for you....... I’ll share more about that later....
And in order to put yourself in the position to receive what God has for you, you ought to read and do what the Psalmist tells us in Psalm 37.....3 through 5........
Trust in the Lord, and do good;
so you will live in the land, and enjoy security.
Take delight in the Lord,
and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Commit your way to the Lord;
trust in him, and he will act.
Yes my brothers and sisters, what God has for you.......it is for you.
Now in our text this morning, ........we see that the young boy named David.....received what God had for him. That is the anointing to be the next King of Israel after King Saul.
The Bible tells us 1 Samuel 15 that King Saul had been rejected by God because of his willful disobedience .... So God sent the Prophet Samuel to Bethlehem to make a sacrifice to the Lord and to select and anoint one of the son’s of Jesse to be the next King of Israel......
And let me suggest that the reason why David received the anointing to be the next King of Israel......wasn’t because he did everything right............it wasn’t because he looked a certain way........it wasn’t because he did “good” things............. It wasn’t because he dotted every i ..........and crossed every t. No David wasn’t selected to be the next King......because he was born into royalty....and would naturally become the next King because his father was the King....... But let me suggest .....David was anointed as the next King because his heart was right with God.
The Bible tells us that David was a man after God’s own heart...... He was humble......he reverenced and feared God.........He was respectful......and He trusted the Lord....... He was devoted....and obedient.....and when he messed up........as we all do sometimes......... He had a repentant heart.
It didn’t matter that David was the youngest......it didn’t matter that he was responsible for tending to his father’s sheep..... What God had for him........was for him.....
Even David’s father Jesse tried to get in the way of what God had planned for David’s life........... But I’m here to tell you this morning my brothers and sisters...... When God has something planned for you in your life.......... your Daddy......your Momma........Your cousins.......... Your friends........not even the devil in hell can stop or prevent what God has planned for you!!
Often times ....if truth be told......sometimes we get in the way of ourselves......for what God has planned for us. But it’s important that in order for us to receive what God has for us....and His will for our lives.....we must have a relationship with Him.......we must have a connection with Him.........we must have a prayer life.......and talk with God........
You see David had a relationship with God.......he had a connection with Him.......David was a psalmist ......and would often write songs about God and His goodness ...... Yes my brothers and sisters...... David had a relationship with the Lord. But let me also say....that David did not just pray to God..........and talk with God........David listened for God’s guidance and direction.
Yes what God had for him......was for him....
You see, when Jesse received word from the Prophet Samuel that he was coming to Bethlehem to anoint one of his sons.....to be the next King of Israel......Jesse brought all of his sons to meet Samuel......except the one whom he thought Samuel would choose.
Jesse had all of his favorite seven sons.......to pass by Samuel......thinking that one of them would be anointed to be the next King...... The bible tells us that his first son Eliab passed by Samuel.....and even Samuel thought that he had to be the one that the Lord had chosen ......He looked the part of a King.......He was handsome (he had the looks of a Denzel Washington…or Idres Elba)......he was tall.......let me suggest he had a the physique and appearance of .....
The text says..... When they arrived, Samuel took one look at Eliab and thought, “Surely this is the Lord’s anointed!” But the Lord said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The Lord doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”
And I don’t know about you my brothers and sisters, but I like the fact that the Lord looks at our heart......and not the outward appearance. I’m so thankful that God doesn’t judge a book by its cover...... but He looks at our heart to see where we really are with him. You see ....we as humans often look at a person and judge that person based on how they look......not who they are as a person........ Amen somebody......... You may see the outer appearance ........and think negative thought about the person...... but you don’t know their heart. I’m thankful that God knows our heart.......
And so the text goes on to tell us that the second son........Abinadab.....comes......and he isn’t the one...........Jesse summoned Shimea, but Samuel said, “Neither is this the one the Lord has chosen.” In the same way all seven of Jesse’s sons were presented to Samuel. But none of them were the one that the Lord had choose.
All of Jesse’s sons looked handsome......clean cut...........dressed sharped............all of them physically fit.........they all had the appearance of a King......but none of them were chosen by THE KING....to be the King of Israel.
While Samuel wanted to say yes to the Sons of Jesse.......God said no because ........What was for David........was for David.......... And my brothers and sisters........ I’m hear to tell you ....that What God has for you is for you!!!
So the Prophet Samuel says.......“Are these all the sons you have?”
“There is still the youngest,” Jesse replied. “But he’s out in the fields watching the sheep and goats.”
In other words, what Jesse was telling Samuel was that ....... I didn’t think that David would be the one that would be anointed as King, so I didn’t even invite him to come ....or there was no way that David would be selected as the next King because he is the youngest and least qualified of all my sons to be the next King......
David was just not worth looking at........
He was tending the sheep........probably smelled bad.........and didn’t look as good.......
And that’s sad to think that Jesse thought so little of his youngest son........that he counted him out .........But my brothers and sisters......... listen........when others count you out....... know that What God has for you.......it is for you.
People may talk bad about you........gossip behind your back.......but what God has for you......it is for you.......
People may lie about you..........but what God has for you.......it is for you......
People may not think you can do it.......... but what God has for you.......it is for you.......
And notice what Samuel says........
Send for him at once,” Samuel said. “We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.
There is a lesson we can glean from that........right there.....
And that lesson is.......what God has for you.......you don’t always have to look for it......
Let me say that again.....for those in the back....... What God has for you........ you don’t always have to look for it.
You don’t have to search high and low for it..........because it will come to you.......
You see......he wasn’t even looking to be anointed the King of Israel.....
He was minding his own business.........watching his Daddy’s sheep........
He wasn’t even trying to find out what his Daddy and Brothers were doing there without him........
He wasn’t looking.....he wasn’t searching......he didn’t get mad because he wasn’t invited........and let me tell you something.......... Listen.......
And that’s usually when you get what God has for you......
You will find yourself blessed when you are taking care of your own business and doing what God has called you to do.....
Not worrying about what someone else is doing.........
Let me see if I can bring this up to 21st century context........
You don’t always have to be in search for that significant other.........or your boo........or bae............ You don’t always have to be on match.com......eharmony.com..........blackpeoplemeet.com.....all the single people.....can I get an amen?
Sometimes God will put that person in your life ......when you’re not even looking.......
What God has for you.......it is for you.
Notice what Samuel says in verse 11......“We will not sit down to eat until he arrives.”
You see there are some things that are waiting for your arrival....
The things that God has for you.......it is waiting for your arrival......
That job that God has for you......is waiting for your arrival.....
That house that God has for you......is waiting for your arrival.....
That husband or wife that God has for you......is waiting for your arrival....
What God has for you.......it cannot take place......until God brings you there.......
And what God has planned for you, what God has for you, nobody can take it from you......
Nobody can steal it.....
Nobody can cheat you out of it......
You may not be where God want you to be right now......but He has it for you....and you have to arrive for it...... Remember when I said I would share what I meant later about God preparing you in some form or fashion....
In other words, before God gives you what He has for you....He will prepare you for it......He will train you for it.......Will equip you for it....
You see David was out in the field tending sheep......and God was secretly preparing him to be the next King of Israel.......a mighty warrior.......skilled in warfare.....
The Bible tells us that David says.....
But David said to Saul, “Your servant used to keep sheep for his father; and whenever a lion or a bear came, and took a lamb from the flock, I went after it and struck it down, rescuing the lamb from its mouth; and if it turned against me, I would catch it by the jaw, strike it down, and kill it.
David was getting the skills while tending the sheep to be a mighty warrior........ which enabled David to defeat Goliath......
And God may be trying to prepare you to take you to the place.....to take you to that position.......to take you to what He has for you...... The question is.....are you letting God prepare you for it?
The scripture says that they sent for David and brought him before Samuel.......
And the Bible says that David was ......He was dark and handsome, with beautiful eyes.
And when David arrived........
He sent and brought him in. Now he was ruddy, and had beautiful eyes, and was handsome. The Lord said, “Rise and anoint him; for this is the one.” Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the presence of his brothers; and the spirit of the Lord came mightily upon David from that day forward. Samuel then set out and went to Ramah.
When God gives you what He wants for you......
He will anoint you.........so you will be able to handle......what He has for you......
He will give you understanding......to handle what He has for you......
He will give you power..........to handle what He has for you....
He will give you wisdom......to handle what He has for you......
He will give you confidence......to handle what He has for you.....
He will give you peace......to handle what He has for you......
Yes my brothers and sisters.......what God has for you.......It is for you....... But I believe you have to make that statement personal.......... and say to yourself..... What God has for me.....it is for Me!
You ought to say it with Boldness......with courage........with clarity......and with certainty....... What God has for me........It is for me!!
Oh yes my brothers and sister........I don’t know who I’m talking to this morning.......but I believe this Morning....... What God has for me.........it is for me.....
