Scripture: Exodus 20:12

Exodus 20:12 KJV 1900
12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Introduction

1. As I thought about the message this morning, I thought, what can I say about mothers that has not already been said many times before? a. The answer is, I doubt seriously there is anything I can say that would be new to you or would be something you have not heard before. 2. There will be many messages delivered this morning about the virtuous and godly mother of Proverbs: ''Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies. Her children arise up, and call her blessed; her husband also, and he praiseth her'' (Proverbs 31:10, 28). Proverbs 31:10 (KJV 1900)
10 Who can find a virtuous woman?

No doubt the story of Jochebed will be repeated from many pulpits today. Jochebed was the mother of Moses. What a wonderful story of a mother's love and sacrifice for her son. 4. Many pastors will recall the story of Hannah, the mother of Samuel, and how she dedicated him to the Lord, and how God honored her request by using him in the ministry. 5. Certainly there is much we can say about mothers, many stories we can tell; and what I have to say will probably be something you've heard before. But, let me be quick to add, the story of ''Mother'' never gets old. 6. Allow me to give you three brief and simple thoughts... THE RECOGNITION OF A MOTHER THE RESOURCEFULNESS OF A MOTHER THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A MOTHER
I saw somewhere, ‘A Job Description for Mothers’.
1. This is a permanent job.
2. The successful applicant must be prepared to work hard.
3. The workplace is often a challenging and chaotic environment.
4. Applicants must possess excellent communication and organizational skills and be willing to work variable hours, which will include evenings and weekends and frequent 24 hour shifts on call.
5. Extensive chauffeuring duties also required, but your travel expenses will not usually be reimbursed.
6. Some overnight travel will be required, including trips to camping sites on rainy weekends, and countless sports tournaments in faraway places.
7. Must be willing to be hated, at least temporarily, until someone needs you.
8. Must be willing to bite tongue repeatedly.
9. Must possess the physical stamina of a pack mule and be able to go from zero to 60 mph in three seconds flat in case, this time, the screams from the backyard are genuine, and not just someone crying wolf or playing.
10. Must be willing to face stimulating technical challenges, such as small gadget repair, mysteriously sluggish toilets and stuck zips.
11. Must screen phone calls, maintain calendars and coordinate production of multiple homework projects.
12. Must have ability to plan and organize social gatherings for clients of all ages and mental outlooks.
13. Must be willing to be indispensable one minute, an embarrassment the next.
14. HEALTH AND SAFETY: Must be able to handle the assembly and product safety testing of hundreds of toys and battery operated devices.
15. ATTITUDE AND DEMEANOUR: Must always hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. Must assume final, complete accountability for the quality of the end product.
16. Responsibilities also include floor maintenance, laundering and janitorial work throughout the place of employment.
17. PROMOTION PROSPECTS: None. Your job is to remain in the same position for years, without complaining, constantly retraining and updating your skills, so that those in your charge can ultimately surpass you.
18. PREVIOUS EXPERIENCE: None required, because no other form of employment is totally relevant, but On-the-job in-service training is offered on a continually exhausting basis.
19. WAGES AND BONUSES: None; job satisfaction is what you hopefully receive.
20. OUTLAYS: You pay every bill for your child at least until turn 18 because of the assumption that college will help them become financially independent.
When you die, you give them whatever is left.
The strangest thing about this reverse-salary scheme is that you should enjoy it and wish you could only do more.
21. BENEFITS: While no health or dental insurance, no pension, no tuition reimbursement, no paid holidays and no bonuses are offered; this job supplies limitless opportunities for free hugs for life if you play your cards right.
22. TENURE: For the rest of your life.
1. THE RECOGNITION OF A MOTHER
When you read through the Ten Commandments you will find that 6 of the 10 Commandments focused on our relationship with others. This is the first commandment of the six – God starts at home. This is also the first commandment of the ten that has a promise. It implies a shorter life, proving there is no set time to die and suggesting that man has an impact on his own length of life and destiny. Young people did you hear me? God has given you a promise. Now it’s up to you to grab a hold of it or let it slip through your hands. So let me read that again and you really need to pay attention: “Honor your father and your mother that your days may be long upon the land which the Lord your God is giving you.” Unlike today in America, during Biblical times a child was under their parent’s authority for the duration of their parent’s life.
Anna Jarvis’ motive for having a recognition day for mothers was to honor and remember mothers for their achievements. I believe her motive for fighting for its removal was for the same reason: to honor and remember mothers for their achievements. Mothers do not deserve to be honored for one day only to be neglected the rest of the year. God’s creative plan to bring love and caring to light is through the mothers. Mother’s Day has a very special place in the hearts of the majority of people.
STATISTICS:
• Hallmark estimates that 150 million Mother’s Day cards will be sent this year but only 95 million Father’s Day cards;
• Mother’s Day is the third largest greeting card holiday of the year.
• U.S. Americans spend an average of $105 on Mother’s Day gifts, $90 on Father’s Day gifts.
• The phone rings more often on Mother’s day than Father’s day.
• The busiest day of the year at car washes? The Saturday before Mother’s Day.
2. THE RESOURCEFULNESS OF A MOTHER
When I was just a little kid, I got between a mother hen and her chicks, let me tell you this much, I didn’t stay there for very long as she charged me with her wings all furled out…
This is just as true of human mothers…
Solomon, in his wisdom, uses this well known fact. This knowledge is what enabled him to successfully try the case.
Solomon no doubt learned what a mother’s love is like from his mother, Bathsheba.
What does Solomon know about a mother’s love?
I. A mother’s love is nurturing (21).
For a mom, sleeping in, is usually out of the question. There is a child who needs to be cared for. This mom got up in the morning (dawn, at the breaking through of the daylight).
It is true that these ladies didn’t have anyone else to help them.
But, the responsibility for taking care of the children, especially as babies, usually falls
on the mother.
If your kids are going to eat, and eat healthy, it will usually depend on the mom.
A mother uses all means at her disposal to take care of her children.
Typically, there isn’t anything or anyone more tenacious than a mother fighting for her child. It doesn’t matter who or what gets in the way. You better watch out if it is you.
3. THE RESPONSIBILITY OF A MOTHER
The book of Proverbs is filled with verses telling us what a great blessing children are. And I think all the moms here would agree. It is a privilege to have children, and not an obstacle to your career or a cramp in your style. But children are also an opportunity to thank God for the salvation that he has given us. They are our responsibility to raise in God’s Word. That’s right, God works through mothers and fathers to create saved children of God.
We see a great example of that in Naomi. Ruth didn’t want to leave Naomi, not only because of her love for her mother-in-law, but also because she saw Naomi as her teacher of the truths of God’s Word. She told her, “your God will be my God.” Through the guidance and teaching of Naomi, Ruth had become a child of God. And that is your main responsibility as a parent.
Mothers you are God’s instruments through whom he creates saving faith in your children. Don’t ever take that responsibility lightly. As mothers you have been given many great blessings, but with those blessings come responsibilities. So thank God for the blessings by fulfilling your responsibilities.
To raise children unto God, to seek what is the BEST for them.
Communicating the Truth verbally.
Teach our children the truths of scripture.

CLOSE: That is the advantage a Christian mother has over even the most Godly mother of the Old Testament. The Christian mother can point to a God - so powerful He could experience the turmoils of life who faced suffering, rejection, and even death… and He conquered it all because death would not hold Him.
And she can point to a God who went thru all that because He loved us.
Psalm 22 is a powerful chapter in Scripture… but I believe it’s greatest power is in reminding us of our potential as parents - especially as mothers to prepare our children for the difficulties of life. To give them most powerful tool for overcoming despair.
And that is – the story of a God who cares so much for us… and for our children… that He gave HIS only begotten child… to die on the cross for us and our children.
