Transcript

Ancient letter-writing was opposite to ours.

The signature of the writer was provided at the beginning, not the end.

Paul uses his Greek name, not his Hebrew one.

He used 3 self-identifiers.

A servant of Jesus Christ.

A doulos, literally a slave.

Jesus Christ= Name + Title

Called to apostleship.

Apostle was normally reserved for The Twelve

The word apostle simply means messenger.

Acts 9:15 LEB
15 But the Lord said to him, “Go, because this man is my chosen instrument to carry my name before Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel.
Acts 13:1–3 LEB
1 Now there were prophets and teachers in Antioch in the church that was there: Barnabas, and Simeon (who was called Niger), and Lucius the Cyrenian, and Manaen (a close friend of Herod the tetrarch), and Saul. 2 And while they were serving the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart now for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.” 3 Then, after they had fasted and prayed and placed their hands on them, they sent them away.

Set apart to share God’s good news.

Set apart: sanctified

Promised beforehand

Galatians 3:8 LEB
8 And the scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the good news in advance to Abraham: “In you all the nations will be blessed.”
Genesis 12:1–3 LEB
1 And Yahweh said to Abram, “Go out from your land and from your relatives, and from the house of your father, to the land that I will show you. 2 And I will make you a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great. And you will be a blessing. 3 And I will bless those who bless you, and those who curse you I will curse. And all families of the earth will be blessed in you.”

The prophets testified to Jesus (whether or not they were aware of it).

In the flesh, he was of David's line.

The resurrection vindicated his claim to be the Son of God.

His resurrection was effected outside himself by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Jesus Christ our Lord (Jesus Christ whose slaves we are)

He gave us grace (salvation) and apostleship (mission)

The mission is to call Gentiles.

The obedience that comes from faith: the faith that produces obedience.

And you (Romans Christians) are among Jesus Christ’s elect.

Now we get to the Dear ----, part of the letter.

To God’s beloved in Rome, the holy ones (saints).

Grace and peace: typical salutation

God our Father, notice the plural.
