Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
This verse has been on my mind all week. We have grown so dependent on gas that when we can have it, we get all up in a tizzy.
What does this tell you about who we are?
I am reminded of this great passage of several things. The word “trust” means to boast, swear by, memorialize, or to keep in memory or ponder. So if we take this in context, we are seeing that some will boast , swear by, memorialize in chariots and horses.
Faith is put in that which provides security. It is in one sense saying, that we are going to be successful because of the strength we have in what we can do with our means of transportation and what that represents.
If we modernize this, some place their ability to exist based on their ability to have transportation. If that is taken away, life gets more “tizzified.”
It becomes a matter of RELIANCE. What are you putting your reliance in? This gas thing, is a huge test on our reliance.
Reliance in stuff of the world will always become shallow.
Woe to those who go down to Egypt for help,
who rely on horses,
who trust in the multitude of their chariots
and in the great strength of their horsemen,
but do not look to the Holy One of Israel,
or seek help from the Lord.
A horse is a vain hope for deliverance;
despite all its great strength it cannot save.
Psalm 20:7 tells us to place our trust in the Name of the Lord our God.
It is not just a random idea. In fact, the whole Psalm 20 shows us 7 things in how God can be trusted.
For the director of music. A psalm of David.
May the Lord answer you when you are in distress;
may the name of the God of Jacob protect you.
May he send you help from the sanctuary
and grant you support from Zion.
May he remember all your sacrifices
and accept your burnt offerings. Selah
May he give you the desire of your heart
and make all your plans succeed.
We will shout for joy when you are victorious
and will lift up our banners in the name of our God.
May the Lord grant all your requests.
Now I know that the Lord saves his anointed;
he answers him from his holy heaven
with the saving power of his right hand.
Some trust in chariots and some in horses,
but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.
They are brought to their knees and fall,
but we rise up and stand firm.
O Lord, save the king!
Answer us when we call!
God can be trusted in our time of trouble (vs. 1)
God can be trusted to protect us (vs. 1)
God can be trusted to send help (vs. 2)
God can be trusted to support and strengthen us (vs. 3)
God can be trusted to give us our heart’s desire (vs. 4)
God can be trusted to make our plans succeed (vs. 4)
God can be trusted to answer us with His saving power (vs.6)
Based on all of these preliminary verses that describe how God and be trusted, we can apply this to what we are all experiencing today.
And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
So should we be in a tizzy about gas running out?
