Detrimental Exercise Detrimental Exercise Michael Morse / General CrossFit / Greed; Anxiety; Stress; Life; Money; Trust; Faith; Goodness of God; Kingdom of God / Luke 12:13-34 Physically there are exercises that we can do that are detrimental to our health and fitness. Putting to much strain and unintended stress on joints, bones, ligaments and the heart is not good for our crossfitness. Spiritually there are exercises we do that are detrimental to our walk with Christ and our spiritual crossfitness. We must remove these detrimental exercises from our routines in order to maintain our spiritual crossfitness. The exercise of greed and worry. Introduction 1. Exercise is good for you right? a. It is encouraged to get at least 30 minutes of exercise 5 days a week minimum i. It is encouraged also to do more ii. But this is the "minimum" b. Most serious crossfitters do more than this recommended minimum i. not only by adding in an extra day - but by either doing 2 a days or just longer sessions ii. For the most part this is good - and keeps them in athletic shape and what we would call crossfit c. There is such a thing as detrimental exercise though i. Detrimental exercise can be bad exercises or over exercising ii. It is detrimental because it causes injury by putting undo strain and stress on the muscles, ligaments, bones and even heart 1. This is damaging and destructive to our body and threatens our crossfitness 2. The same is true for spiritual crossfitness a. There are exercises and practices we do that produce attitude and heart conditions b. These exercises are detrimental to our spiritual crossfitness - one in particular Luke will be focusing on i. Let read and see what this exercise is that is detrimental to our crossfitness so we can remove it from our routine › SLIDE Luke 12:13-15 CSB 13 Someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14 "Friend," he said to him, "who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?" 15 He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions." › SLIDE Luke 12:16-18 CSB 16 Then he told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive. 17 He thought to himself, 'What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops? 18 I will do this,' he said. 'I'll tear down my barns and build bigger ones and store all my grain and my goods there. › SLIDE Luke 12:19-21 CSB 19 Then I'll say to myself, "You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself." ' 20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared-whose will they be?' 21 "That's how it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God." › SLIDE Luke 12:22-24 CSB 22 Then he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Aren't you worth much more than the birds? › SLIDE Luke 12:25-27 CSB 25 Can any of you add one moment to his life span by worrying? 26 If then you're not able to do even a little thing, why worry about the rest? 27 "Consider how the wildflowers grow: They don't labor or spin thread. Yet I tell you, not even Solomon in all his splendor was adorned like one of these. › SLIDE Luke 12:28-29 CSB 28 If that's how God clothes the grass, which is in the field today and is thrown into the furnace tomorrow, how much more will he do for you-you of little faith? 29 Don't strive for what you should eat and what you should drink, and don't be anxious. › SLIDE Luke 12:30-32 CSB 30 For the Gentile world eagerly seeks all these things, and your Father knows that you need them. 31 "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. 32 Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. › SLIDE Luke 12:33-34 CSB 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. › SLIDE Guard Against Exercising Greed › SLIDE Luke 12:13-15 CSB 13 Someone from the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me." 14 "Friend," he said to him, "who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you?" 15 He then told them, "Watch out and be on guard against all greed, because one's life is not in the abundance of his possessions." 1. Greed has the power to destroy a. A man spoke from the crowd asking Jesus to "tell" or make his brother divide the inheritance i. divide - part or share › SLIDE Deuteronomy 21:17 CSB 17 He must acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the neglected wife, by giving him two shares of his estate, for he is the firstfruits of his virility; he has the rights of the firstborn. 1. This is known as the right of the firstborn It has been said - where there is a will... ...there is a war - involving relatives. The more money, property or possessions involved the nastier and more destructive the conflict. ii. We are not told if he was being denied his rightful portion of if he was seeking a bigger share undo him for greediness. 1. Just remember the point is demanding a share and wanting Jesus to make it so b. Jesus replies friend who appointed me a judge or arbitrator over you? i. It is true Jesus is judge over all - but in this matter - this trivial matter and family dispute Jesus would not judge in › SLIDE Jesus did not come in this world to settle trivial family matters; although when people are devoted to Jesus they are able to work out such matters - but only after submitting to and obeying His word and commandments 2. Jesus says to everyone (there and here this morning) watch out and be on guard against ALL greed a. Greed - the sense is greediness - a noun - something possessed and used or exercised i. Greed is the insatiable desire for more - more of anything ii. Jesus says be on guard, be on watch against ALL Greed iii. Other translations use the word covetousness › SLIDE Fighting for what we believe is rightfully ours or owed to us - can be a form of covetousness and greed 1. We mask this by claiming a righteous crusade - I am only seeking whats rightfully mine... › SLIDE - think back to the brothers Proverbs 15:27 NLT 27 Greed brings grief to the whole family, but those who hate bribes will live. J.R. Miller points out: This is one of the red flags our Lord hung out which most people nowadays do not seem much to regard. Christ said a great deal about the danger of riches; but not many are afraid of riches. Covetousness is not practically considered a sin in these times. If a man breaks the sixth or eighth he is branded a criminal and covered with shame; but he may break the tenth, and he is only enterprising. The Bible says the love of money is a root of all evil; but every man who quotes the saying puts a terrific emphasis on the word "love", explaining that it is not money, but the love of it, that is such a prolific root. 3. Life is not in the abundance of one's possessions a. Jesus is explaining that life is not found in possessions › SLIDE To live with the attitude that our life consists in what we possess - we live covetousness; which is idolatry › SLIDE Colossians 3:5 CSB 5 Therefore, put to death what belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desire, and greed, which is idolatry. b. We read - "in the abundance of one's possessions" and we consider ourselves safe - because we dont have an abundance - we can think of those who have more i. But Jesus is saying life is not found in an abundance of possessions of any amount - therefore be on the watch for greed - it is detrimental those who "have" and those who "lack" as well ii. Jesus gives three parables to illustrate this truth › SLIDE Greed In Abundance › SLIDE Luke 12:16-18 CSB 16 Then he told them a parable: "A rich man's land was very productive. 17 He thought to himself, 'What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops? 18 I will do this,' he said. Jesus gives us the parable of the rich man show greed in abundance a. The rich man had very productive land - it produced an abundance of crops i. Faced with a problem - not knowing what to do with the abundance of crops ii. Foolishly we think more will rid us of our problems and anxieties - but clearly abundance brings in its own troubles b. The rich man decides that the abundance is for him to enjoy › SLIDE 1 Samuel 25:4-6 CSB 4 While David was in the wilderness, he heard that Nabal was shearing sheep, 5 so David sent ten young men instructing them, "Go up to Carmel, and when you come to Nabal, greet him in my name. 6 Then say this: 'Long life to you, and peace to you, peace to your family, and peace to all that is yours. › SLIDE 1 Samuel 25:7-8 CSB 7 I hear that you are shearing. When your shepherds were with us, we did not harass them, and nothing of theirs was missing the whole time they were in Carmel. 8 Ask your young men, and they will tell you. So let my young men find favor with you, for we have come on a feast day. Please give whatever you have on hand to your servants and to your son David.' " › SLIDE 1 Samuel 25:9-11 CSB 9 David's young men went and said all these things to Nabal on David's behalf, and they waited. 10 Nabal asked them, "Who is David? Who is Jesse's son? Many slaves these days are running away from their masters. 11 Am I supposed to take my bread, my water, and my meat that I butchered for my shearers and give them to these men? I don't know where they are from." › David at once went armed ready attack for lack of sharing › SLIDE - Abigail gave David what he asked and then Nabal about it 1 Samuel 25:36-38 CSB 36 Then Abigail went to Nabal, and there he was in his house, holding a feast fit for a king. Nabal's heart was cheerful, and he was very drunk, so she didn't say anything to him until morning light. 37 In the morning when Nabal sobered up, his wife told him about these events. His heart died and he became a stone. 38 About ten days later, the LORD struck Nabal dead. › SLIDE 1 Samuel 25:39 CSB 39 When David heard that Nabal was dead, he said, "Blessed be the LORD who championed my cause against Nabal's insults and restrained his servant from doing evil. The LORD brought Nabal's evil deeds back on his own head." Then David sent messengers to speak to Abigail about marrying him. c. This rich man decided to tear down for himself instead of consider who might have need i. At greater expense to himself ii. Easier to share the abundance than guard it Ambrose said "the bosoms of the poor, the houses of the widows, the mouths of the children are the barns which last forever." d. Plans to retire and live comfortably for himself i. Notice the selfishness - my crops, my barns, my grain, my goods - forgetting everything is God's and we are only stewards › SLIDE Greed in abundance leads us to forget God 1. We think we are independent and look at what we did 2. We have no want and therefore we have no need of God ii. Boasting about tomorrow › SLIDE James 4:13-14 CSB 13 Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will travel to such and such a city and spend a year there and do business and make a profit." 14 Yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring-what your life will be! For you are like vapor that appears for a little while, then vanishes. 2. God says to the rich man - and to the one who is greedy in abundance - YOU FOOL a. God says this night your life is demanded of you i. You think time is in your hands? ii. You live for yourself with no preparation for what's next - eternity › SLIDE Eternity proves a man a fool who puts too much value on the abundance of material things iii. demanded - language of obligation and debt b. The things you have now - whose will they be? i. You cannot take any of it with you 3. This is how it will be for the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God › SLIDE Jesus does not endorse the philosophy of looking out for numero uno a. We must ask ourselves the question - if Christ should come today - whose would all my possessions be? i. Wouldnt it be better to use them for God today - to be rich toward God - than for them to be left to the devil tomorrow? › SLIDE 1 Timothy 6:17-19 CSB 17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God, who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. 18 Instruct them to do what is good, to be rich in good works, to be generous and willing to share, 19 storing up treasure for themselves as a good foundation for the coming age, so that they may take hold of what is truly life. › SLIDE Greed In Lack › SLIDE Luke 12:22-24 CSB 22 Then he said to his disciples, "Therefore I tell you, don't worry about your life, what you will eat; or about the body, what you will wear. 23 For life is more than food and the body more than clothing. 24 Consider the ravens: They don't sow or reap; they don't have a storeroom or a barn; yet God feeds them. Greed not only affects those who have much but also those who consider they lack › SLIDE Greed in lack breeds worry and anxiety; because greed in lack leads to not trusting God a. Jesus admonishes them to not worry about your life i. Not about food or the body - clothing ii. Basic necessities - food clothing and shelter (according to the world) - God promises to provide food and clothing - because He is our shelter b. Jesus next tells us - life is more than food and the body more than clothing i. It is not worth your life to worry about these things 1. Worry is harmful a. Research shows that stress deteriorates our immune systems and people under constant high stress show lower T-Cell counts which are essential for immune response b. Stress affects fertility c. Prolonged stress affects the brain - causing one to be unable to respond to future stress d. Stress is also harmful to the heart and circulatory system - leading to heart failure, stroke and other maladies › SLIDE There may be greater sins than worry, but none are more self-defeating and useless ii. Life is more than the physical 1. Animals live in the purely physical 2. You life as one created in the image of God is more - it consists of eternal/spiritual matters c. One of the dangers is that aquisition of food and clothing becomes the aim of our life - our existence. i. This becomes the focus of our life and we push the work for the Lord to the side ii. This happens when we desire more than what we have - we feel we lack and we believe we should have more 1. We become greedy in our lack and we dont trust God - so we worry about how to provide these things and make sure we arent without 2. Jesus gives two illustrations to help us trust God to provide a. Ravens/Crows i. Consider them - think and study - understand 1. They dont sow or reap 2. They dont store up or have barns ii. Yet God feeds them - they are taken care of 1. They live in ongoing dependence upon God - not worrying and frantic to provide future needs iii. Aren't you worth more than the birds? 1. Do you trust that you are worth more to God than birds are? › SLIDE When you understand your value before God and trust it, you will root out worry b. Wildflowers/Lilies i. Consider these now 1. They dont labor or spin - making cloth or coverings ii. Yet not even Solomon in all of his splendor was arrayed as one of these 1. If this is how God clothes the grass - which is in the field today and furnace tomorrow - has a shorter lifespan than you 2. How much more will He do for you? You of little faith - of little trust a. When we worry we prove oursevles to be lacking faith in God's provision for us or being discontent with it c. It doesnt mean we should stop working or providing i. It means we should walk with the same dependence on God ii. He knows your needs and will meet them 1. Can any add a moment to their life worrying? 2. If you cant even do that little thing - Jesus says - why worry about the rest › SLIDE Trust in the One to whom it is a small thing to add a moment of life 3. Jesus says dont strive for what you should eat or drink a. Strive - look for or desire or seek i. The Gentile world seeks these things - God knows that you NEED them ii. We waste too much of our lives worried and anxious over what God would provide for us if we would just devote our time and talents to Him iii. Jesus contrasts the life of the believer and a Gentile - pagan, godless, unbeliever › SLIDE There should be a difference from the life of a believer and one of the world › SLIDE You say again that you cannot help being anxious. Then, my dear friend, I must solemnly ask you what is the difference between you and the man of the world? › SLIDE Recovery From Greed › SLIDE Luke 12:31-32 CSB 31 "But seek his kingdom, and these things will be provided for you. 32 Don't be afraid, little flock, because your Father delights to give you the kingdom. › SLIDE Luke 12:33-34 CSB 33 Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Make money-bags for yourselves that won't grow old, an inexhaustible treasure in heaven, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. 34 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. 1. To recover from the detriment of greed requires exercising new priorities a. Greed made seeking more a priority - but to recover we must have a new priority › SLIDE To overcome and recover from greed our new priority is seeking God's kingdom i. This isnt just a new priority added to what we already do - it must be the priority in all we do 1. Seek His kingdom in all you do a. Being a husband, wife, father, mother, sister, brother, son, daughter, worker, neighbor, provider, leader, etc ii. When we have this as a new priority the other things will be provided for you b. Dont worry - God delights to give you the kingdom i. Trust the Lord desires good for you - that in providing is His delight ii. Habits cannot just be stopped they must be replaced › SLIDE Ephesians 4:28 CSB 28 Let the thief no longer steal. Instead, he is to do honest work with his own hands, so that he has something to share with anyone in need. 1. Replace worry with concern for the kingdom of God c. Generosity corrects greed i. Sell your possessions and give to the poor 1. The command to give away what we have is a test of discipleship › SLIDE When you choose to live by faith, that faith will always be tested 2. It is also a tool to train us as disciples to trust God and be conduits of His blessings 2. Greed comes from seeking and storing treasure in a world with corruption and sin - to overcome we seek God's kingdom and store treasure there a. There is no sin or corruoption in heaven - no thief to steal, no rust to destroy and no moths b. Jesus says where your treasure is there your heart is also i. Where is your treasure? Thats where your heart is Conclusion Greed is a detrimental exercise - we think we are looking out for our good but we end up forgetting and not trusting God. Greed rots and destroys all it touches. Greed isnt just a rich problem - it is a heart problem Greed and worry are closely connected - greed can never get enough and worry is afraid it will never have enough - neither one has their eyes on Jesus › SLIDE Philippians 4:12-13 CSB 12 I know how to make do with little, and I know how to make do with a lot. In any and all circumstances I have learned the secret of being content-whether well fed or hungry, whether in abundance or in need. 13 I am able to do all things through him who strengthens me. › SLIDE Proverbs 30:7-9 CSB 7 Two things I ask of you; don't deny them to me before I die: 8 Keep falsehood and deceitful words far from me. Give me neither poverty nor wealth; feed me with the food I need. 9 Otherwise, I might have too much and deny you, saying, "Who is the LORD?" or I might have nothing and steal, profaning the name of my God. › SLIDE 1 Timothy 6:6-10 CSB 6 But godliness with contentment is great gain. 7 For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out. 8 If we have food and clothing, we will be content with these. 9 But those who want to be rich fall into temptation, a trap, and many foolish and harmful desires, which plunge people into ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, and by craving it, some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.
