As you all know we have been studying through the theme “Names of Jesus” and I hope it has been as much a blessing to you as it has to me. There is never a downside to learning more about our Lord and Savior. Today we are going to be examining Jesus as the “Lamb of God.” Before we jump into the passages related to this we need to step back into the Old Testament to understand the significance of Jesus being called the Lamb of God. Lamb’s, in the Old Testament, were used by God to represent or foreshadow a valuable role concerning sins and their atonement. The Hebrew word for “atone,” simply conveyed the idea of “covering sins” i.e., rolling sins forward in anticipation of the ultimate lamb sacrifice, Jesus. We first see the lamb as a powerful “shadow” of Christ with the Passover lamb during the last plague against Egypt (Exodus 12). This lamb was to have no broken bones (Exodus 12:46) and it’s blood was to be spread over the door post of the home so that the angel would not kill the first born of that home (Exodus 12:7-12). In other words, the blood saved some in that family from death certain death. This is why lambs play such an important part, and were used as daily reminders concerning the peoples sins (Exodus 29:38-46; Leviticus 4:27-35). Now with the Jews fully aware of the purpose of these “unblemished lambs” it is no wonder Jesus would take the title Lamb of God. After all it was even prophesied that he would be the “lamb led to the slaughter.”
7 He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth; like a lamb that is led to the slaughter, and like a sheep that before its shearers is silent, so he opened not his mouth.
So, John the baptizer, who prepared the way for Jesus’ ministry (Mark 1:1-8), rightly declared Jesus as the Lamb of God.
29 The next day he saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!
And as we go throughout the scriptures we see this very reality declared by several of the New Testament writers.
Paul would describe Jesus as the Passover Lamb.
7 Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed.
Luke & Philip identify Jesus as the “lamb led to the slaughter” in Acts 8:32.
32 Now the passage of the Scripture that he was reading was this: “Like a sheep he was led to the slaughter and like a lamb before its shearer is silent, so he opens not his mouth.
Peter calls the Christ the precious unblemished and spotless lamb.
19 but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot.
And in the book of Revelation we see Jesus as the “slain lamb” for the sins of the world.
1 Then I saw in the right hand of him who was seated on the throne a scroll written within and on the back, sealed with seven seals. 2 And I saw a mighty angel proclaiming with a loud voice, “Who is worthy to open the scroll and break its seals?” 3 And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth was able to open the scroll or to look into it, 4 and I began to weep loudly because no one was found worthy to open the scroll or to look into it. 5 And one of the elders said to me, “Weep no more; behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root of David, has conquered, so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.” 6 And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. 7 And he went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. 8 And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. 9 And they sang a new song, saying, “Worthy are you to take the scroll and to open its seals, for you were slain, and by your blood you ransomed people for God from every tribe and language and people and nation,
Truly, Jesus is the Lamb of God.
