I. Jesus And Jairus vs. 21-24
A. When Jesus get back to Capernaum, Jairus, who was probably the head of the synagogue. This man would have been very wealthy and very influential. He comes to Jesus, not by faith, but from desperation. Desperation is often a precursor to faith!
B. His daughter is dying, so in desperation Jairus comes to Jesus.
for he had an only daughter, about twelve years old, and she was dying. But as He went, the crowds were pressing against Him.
C. Everyone wanted to see Jesus heal. In doing so, they clog the streets.
II. Jesus And the Unclean Woman vs. 25-34
II. Jesus And the Unclean Woman vs. 25-34
A. This woman had suffered as long as the little girl had been alive. (Contrast the woman and Jairus’ life [rich, poor, happy, sad etc.]).
And a woman who had a hemorrhage for twelve years, and could not be healed by anyone,
B. In the Talmud (Jewish traditional teaching) they had a few potions, but most of the 11 remedies, were superstitious. “‘set her in a place where two ways meet, and let her hold a cup of wine in her right hand, and let some one come behind and frighten her, and say, “Arise from thy flux.’ In another place, the Talmud recommended that the afflicted woman carry a barley corn which had been taken from the droppings of a white she donkey” - R. Kent Hughes.
C. The common belief that if a very godly man’s shadow passed over you, or you touched their garment you could be healed.
D. Jesus wants to prove a point by as king who touched not Him, but His garments. He is showing that the popular superstitious belief is garbage.
E. The lady’s mustered seed sized faith, not the superstitious belief made her whole.
F. What are you believing God for, but your belief or lack thereof is getting in your way.
III. Jesus and the Dead Girl vs. 35-43
III. Jesus and the Dead Girl vs. 35-43
A. Now news comes saying that the little girl has died, but Jesus tells desperate Jairus to have faith. Why? Because all Jairus, could see told him hope was lost, but faith always has hope, when faith is placed in Jesus.
for we walk by faith, not by sight—
B. Jesus puts off the crowd and even 9 of the disciples, so that they will see this resurrection.
C. The Jews would typically have hired mourners, that hung out when someone was sick and dying, so that their mourning announced and pronounced people dead. So when Jesus says the girl was not dead, they laughed at Jesus’ perceived foolishness.
D. Death is separation from God, so when believers die, the Bible says that they’re asleep, because they only physically died.
E. Jesus resurrects her, and says literally “little lamb...”.
F. Jesus commands them, to tell no one, because His preaching ministry would be hindered.
G. In this case we see desperation, and superstition bring people to faith. What is hindering you? What miracle do you need?
