It Takes Time It Takes Time Michael Morse / General CrossFit / Discipleship; Chosen; Prayer; Jesus chooses the twelve apostles / Luke 6:12-19 Jesus chose the 12 apostles not for who they were, but for who they would be. As He chose them they werent ready for the mission and calling, but they would be. They would become ready by spending time with Jesus. Jesus in the same way calls us to Him not for who we are but for who we will be in His name. We in the same way become equipped for our calling by spending time with Jesus. Introduction 1. When working out or beginning an exercise regiment it is important to document your journey a. Some do this by getting a starting weight i. This however tells you the least about your journey ii. Weight can continue to be the same while body composition changes 1. Which weighs more? 1lb of muscle or 1lb of fat? 2. They both weigh the same a. The difference is in how much of each is required to make a lb b. Muscle is leaner and denser and therefore requires much less iii. This is why we can get discouraged by only referencing our weight when working out b. The best way to stay encouraged is by using before and after shots i. With as little hiding you as possible ii. Pictures dont lie - just remember sometimes they dont flatter either 1. This is why we have perfected the art of the selfie - we find the angle that matches what we think about ourselves iii. A before shot is your motivation to achieve the goal or get healthier iv. The after shot is seeing the reward of your effort and time put in 1. Most advertisements show the before and after shots rarely do they tell you how long a. Unless they are peddling a product in which case they promise quick results 2. The after shot didnt come automatically - it required time - it took time 2. Luke's Gospel account brings us to Jesus choosing his 12 apostles a. We are going to see before and after shots of the apostles but we are going to remember that they didnt just turn the world upside down - they spent time first it took time to go from the before shot to the after shot b. As we read this my prayer is the Lord would speak to each of us this morning and remind us that we are on a journey and it takes time to arrive we dont go from the before shot to the after shot without spending time - it takes time › SLIDE - lets read together Luke 6:12-14 CSB 12 During those days he went out to the mountain to pray and spent all night in prayer to God. 13 When daylight came, he summoned his disciples, and he chose twelve of them, whom he also named apostles: 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; › SLIDE Luke 6:15-17 CSB 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 17 After coming down with them, he stood on a level place with a large crowd of his disciples and a great number of people from all Judea and Jerusalem and from the seacoast of Tyre and Sidon. › SLIDE Luke 6:18-19 CSB 18 They came to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those tormented by unclean spirits were made well. 19 The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all. › SLIDE Before Shots › SLIDE Luke 6:14-16 CSB 14 Simon, whom he also named Peter, and Andrew his brother; James and John; Philip and Bartholomew; 15 Matthew and Thomas; James the son of Alphaeus, and Simon called the Zealot; 16 Judas the son of James, and Judas Iscariot, who became a traitor. 1. Simon/Peter a. A fisherman - known for his impulsivity › SLIDE - Correcting and Rebuking Jesus Matthew 16:21-23 CSB 21 From then on Jesus began to point out to his disciples that it was necessary for him to go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and be raised the third day. 22 Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, "Oh no, Lord! This will never happen to you!" 23 Jesus turned and told Peter, "Get behind me, Satan! You are a hindrance to me because you're not thinking about God's concerns but human concerns." › SLIDE - refusing His cleansing John 13:6-9 CSB 6 He came to Simon Peter, who asked him, "Lord, are you going to wash my feet?" 7 Jesus answered him, "What I'm doing you don't realize now, but afterward you will understand." 8 "You will never wash my feet," Peter said. He asked Peter, "So, couldn't you stay awake with me one hour? 41 Stay awake and pray, so that you won't enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak." 42 Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, "My Father, if this cannot pass unless I drink it, your will be done." › SLIDE Matthew 26:43-45 CSB 43 And he came again and found them sleeping, because they could not keep their eyes open. 44 After leaving them, he went away again and prayed a third time, saying the same thing once more. 45 Then he came to the disciples and said to them, "Are you still sleeping and resting? See, the time is near. The Son of Man is betrayed into the hands of sinners. › SLIDE - Peter cuts of Malchus's ear John 18:10-11 CSB 10 Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, drew it, struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. (The servant's name was Malchus.) 11 At that, Jesus said to Peter, "Put your sword away! Am I not to drink the cup the Father has given me?" › SLIDE - Peter denies Jesus Mark 14:66-68 CSB 66 While Peter was in the courtyard below, one of the high priest's maidservants came. 67 When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, "You also were with Jesus, the man from Nazareth." 68 But he denied it: "I don't know or understand what you're talking about." Then he went out to the entryway, and a rooster crowed. › SLIDE Mark 14:69-71 CSB 69 When the maidservant saw him again, she began to tell those standing nearby, "This man is one of them." 70 But again he denied it. Andrew a. Peter's brother - the one who introduced Peter to Jesus - a disciple of John the Baptist also a fisherman b. Believed to be the first called as a disciple - not much is known about him and not much is written in the New Testament about him - mentioned about 12 times › SLIDE - doubt in feeding the 5000 John 6:4-6 CSB 4 Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. 5 So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?" 6 He asked this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. › SLIDE John 6:8-9 CSB 8 One of his disciples, Andrew, Simon Peter's brother, said to him, 9 "There's a boy here who has five barley loaves and two fish-but what are they for so many?" › SLIDE Mark 13:1-2 CSB 1 As he was going out of the temple, one of his disciples said to him, "Teacher, look! What massive stones! What impressive buildings!" 2 Jesus said to him, "Do you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another-all will be thrown down." › SLIDE - Andrew is the reason we have the signs of the end times Mark 13:3-4 CSB 3 While he was sitting on the Mount of Olives across from the temple, Peter, James, John, and Andrew asked him privately, 4 "Tell us, when will these things happen? And what will be the sign when all these things are about to be accomplished?" 3. James Zebedee and John Zebedee a. Fishermen from the Zebedee fishing enterprise or Zebedee and sons fishing enterprise b. Brothers and partners with each other and with Peter and Andrew - so I guess they could have been 4 brothers fishing enterprise i. Philip a. Of four Philips mentioned in the bible two are Herod's sons and the other is Philip the evangelist - Philip the apostle is none of those i. Possibly another disciple from John along with Andrew - introduced Nathanael to Jesus › SLIDE - Back to John's account of feeding the 5000 - pragamatic and practical John 6:4-7 CSB 4 Now the Passover, a Jewish festival, was near. 5 So when Jesus looked up and noticed a huge crowd coming toward him, he asked Philip, "Where will we buy bread so that these people can eat?" 6 He asked this to test him, for he himself knew what he was going to do. 7 Philip answered him, "Two hundred denarii worth of bread wouldn't be enough for each of them to have a little." › SLIDE - Not recognizing Jesus John 14:6-8 CSB 6 Jesus told him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. 7 If you know me, you will also know my Father. The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, 'Show us the Father'? 5. Bartholomew/Nathanael a. Bartholomew is believed to be the same person as Nathanael i. If so he is known as the skeptic › SLIDE John 1:45-47 CSB 45 Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the law (and so did the prophets): Jesus the son of Joseph, from Nazareth." 46 "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" Nathanael asked him. "Come and see," Philip answered. 47 Then Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward him and said about him, "Here truly is an Israelite in whom there is no deceit." › SLIDE John 1:48-51 CSB 48 "How do you know me?" We dont know much else about him specifically - he is mentioned only in the list of Matthew Mark Luke and Acts 6. Matthew/Levi a. tax collector i. One of the most controversial and reviled among Jesus disciples ii. probably the wealthiest of the disciples 1. Not much else is known about him 7. Thomas a. Known as doubting Thomas i. Also nicknamed Thomas the twin › SLIDE John 11:16 CSB 16 Then Thomas (called "Twin") said to his fellow disciples, "Let's go too so that we may die with him." › SLIDE John 20:24-25 CSB 24 But Thomas (called "Twin"), one of the Twelve, was not with them when Jesus came. 25 So the other disciples were telling him, "We've seen the Lord!" But he said to them, "If I don't see the mark of the nails in his hands, put my finger into the mark of the nails, and put my hand into his side, I will never believe." 8. James son of Alphaeus a. Known as James the less i. Not the brother of Jesus and not the father of Judas ii. Not much is known about him or his ministry - not the leader in Jerusalem or the writer of James 9. Simon a. Known as Simon the Zealot i. Zealot is one who was against the Roman occupation - they were known to carry daggers in their cloak and if the opportunity presented itself they would kill Roman soldiers or officials ii. Nine Simons in the New Testament - this is the only who is the zealot so he is not the other Simon's 10. Judas son of James/Thaddeus a. Not Iscariot i. Not much known - alot speculated 11. Judas Iscariot a. Most infamous of the disciples b. Synonymous with traitor i. Thief ii. Treasurer › SLIDE John 12:4-6 CSB 4 Then one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot (who was about to betray him), said, 5 "Why wasn't this perfume sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?" 6 He didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. Known for his impulsive ways and speaking out - Peter became the main spokes person on the day of Pentecost - 3000 converted that day › SLIDE Acts 2:14 CSB 14 Peter stood up with the Eleven, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them: "Fellow Jews and all you residents of Jerusalem, let me explain this to you and pay attention to my words. › SLIDE Acts 2:41 CSB 41 So those who accepted his message were baptized, and that day about three thousand people were added to them. b. Working miracles - healing the sick and laying hands on for the holy spirit c. Wrote 2 Epistles and was martyred for his faith by Emperor Nero 64 AD - crucified upside down 2. Andrew a. He was first to idenitfy Jesus as Messiah - John 1:27 i. Peter was made famous for his declaration but Andrew was first "He preached the gospel to many Asiatic nations; but on his arrival at Edessa he was taken and crucified on a cross, the two ends of which were fixed transversely in the ground. Hence the derivation of the term, St. Andrew's Cross." - Foxes Book of Martyrs 3. James Zebedee a. John Zebedee a. Went from being a disciple who wanted to rain thunder down on those who didnt accept Jesus to being the Apostle of love - writing a Gospel bearing his name as well as three epistles and the book of revelation i. The disciple whom Jesus loved - on of the inner 3 ii. The only apostle to die of old age - not that they didnt try to martyr him - boiling him in oil didnt work - they exiled him to Patmos where he wrote revelation 5. Philip 6. Bartholomew/Nathanael a. Tradition says he preached in several countries and translated Matthew into East Indian language and taught there. i. Beaten mercilessly and crucified 7. Matthew/Levi a. Tradition - says he went to Ethiopia b. Pinned to the ground and beheaded AD 60 8. Thomas a. Preached in Persia, Parthia, and India b. As a zealot it is amazing that he would have been associated with Matthew the tax collector i. believed to be a martyr - not exactly sure how or when - Tradition says Simon was martyred with Jude in Syria 11. Time in prayer - verse 12 a. Verse 12 tells us in the days of increasing hostility and opposition i. Hostility and opposition drove Jesus to pray - it should drive us to prayer also ii. As Jesus went to pray - he went to the mountain to pray b. Jesus was praying as He would be choosing disciples to send out as Apostles i. In the OT psalms mountains are places of safety, strength, and permanence › SLIDE Psalm 121:1 CSB 1 I lift my eyes toward the mountains. Where will my help come from? ii. Jesus went to the mountain to have solitude 1. He would be undisturbed and prayed all night 2. Jesus didnt always pray all night - he liked sleep like we do - but when He needed to He prayed all night a. Here b. Garden of Gethsemane - 3 disciples kept falling asleep - because it was late c. Choosing the disciples would be arguably the most important choice - to establish the church - to pour into to mature strengthen and instruct 2. Time as a disciple - verse 13 a. Jesus came down and chose His apostles from among the disciples i. This meant Jesus had a large group of disciples - those who were with Him ii. The twelve came from among these men 1. Disciples were followers - but Apostles are sent out ones - delegated with Authority › SLIDE We must spend time with Jesus as disciples first for Him to choose from among us for other service 3. Time in ministry - verse 17-19 a. Jesus came down with the apostles and stood on a level place with disciples and the crowd i. With Jesus we are all on equal ground - none are higher or lifted up 1. Jesus Himself came not to be served but to serve › SLIDE We must spend time in ministry in order to learn that we are all in desperate need of Jesus b. They came to hear Jesus and be healed by Jesus - the crowd wanted to touch Jesus › SLIDE We must spend time in ministry so we can learn and know - we must bring the crowds to Jesus and we must go to Jesus Conclusion Jesus's example of prayer Jesus could have used His omnipotence to select the 12 but He limited Himself to need God the Father and set an example for us to pray • Where is your mountain to pray? Where is your solitude where you can spend time in the presence of Jesus? • Mountains are awesome usually they help us get away from everything that would interrupt us • If you dont have a mountain you need to have one Jesus chose 12 ordinary men Jesus did not choose any religious leaders, he did not choose any remarkable men - in fact some would argue that the group He chose would be the hardest to deal with and work with Jesus's choice vs man's choice - resumes of 12 men Dear Sir: Thank you for submitting the resumes of the twelve men you have picked for managerial positions in your new organization. One of the candidates, however, shows great potential. He is a man of ability and resourcefulness, meets people well, has a keen business mind, and has contacts in high places. He is highly motivated, ambitious, and responsible. We recommend Judas Iscariot as your controller and right-hand man. All of the other profiles are self-explanatory. We wish you every success in your new venture. • Jesus chooses differently than we do and He chooses even knowing us - He chose you knowing you it didnt deter Him - find solace and grace in that your works acts past present or future didnt scare Him off • Also notice Jesus chose ordinary men - that gives you and I hope that He can and will use us - just remember it takes time with Jesus before He can use us Disciples are different from the crowds - the crowds come for the fill in the blank and then go home - disciples remain in proximity to Jesus › SLIDE Discipleship take time with Jesus As we spend the time with Jesus He grows us matures us conforms us into His image - The disicples named apostles didnt turn the world upside down overnight - they made mistakes, they tripped up and they continued on and they continued with Jesus and after 3 years Jesus was ready to leave them and send them out After time with Him He wants to send us out also.
