Prophesy is not … but excellent gift of understanding… Calvin: “Under the kingdom of Christ there shall not be a few prophets only, unto whom God may reveal his secrets; but all men shall be endued with spiritual wisdom, even to the prophetical excellency. As it is also in Jeremiah, “Every man shall no longer teach his neighbour; because they shall all know me, from the least unto the greatest,” (Jeremiah 31:34.)

Speaking in languages wonders of God - maximum effect… then Spirit stopped through their mouths, and Peter stood up … making it clear that though some expected events remain in the future the final stages of history have now been reached; the gift of the Spirit belongs to the last days = why all nations can call on NAME and be saved!
Age when Prophesy not confined to a few!
v.21 As many as call on Lord at end = End of Joel tacked on by Peter in first par tof speech, but Proimse for all whom the Lord our God will call… as many as the Lord calls. v.39 = his sermon is a standard Jewish (midrashic) exposition of the last line he quoted, and answers the question: What is the name of the Lord on whom they are to call? In the Hebrew text, “Lord” here is the sacred name of God (Yahweh), which readers in the synagogue would pronounce as the word for “Lord” (Adonai); in the Greek text that Peter probably cites to communicate with hearers from many nations, it is simply the Greek word for “Lord,” but everyone would know that it means “God” here.

the pleasure at right hand forever more is the HSp and Jesus is pouring Him out, rather than them at the Father’s right hand.
Peter’s understanding: = my soul and holy one same person, speaking of Messiah not himself, Why use Psalm? - impossible Jesus is held by death? die but not remain dead, since in God’s presence in new way after death… = but big deal is WHAT DAVID PROPHETICALLY NEW IN 2:30 set one of his descendants on his throne, and resurrection = not Hades, not courrption …

= confirms the view that Jesus received the Spirit to confer on the church at his ascension, a different event from his own reception of the Spirit for his messianic ministry at his baptism (Luke 3:22; Acts 10:38 = Beale PENTECOST = DESCENT OF LATTER_DAY TEMPLE of God’s presence on his people! Receive the Holy Spirit.” ’ It is no coincidence that some commentators have observed that this act of ‘breathing’ echoes Genesis 2:7, where God ‘breathed’ (the same Greek word as in John 20) into Adam ‘the breath of life, and Adam became a living being’. In the preceding verse (v. 21), Christ says, ‘as the Father has sent Me, I also send you’. This is another episode like the ‘Great Commission’ given in Matthew 28:18–20, which we have seen is plausibly to be understood as a renewal of the commission given to Adam. In this sense, this event is different from the subsequent event of Pentecost, when many more received the Spirit.
Therefore, the allusion to Genesis 2:7 takes on more significance: Jesus is empowering his followers not with physical life, as with Adam, but with spiritual empowerment to do what Adam and others had failed to do (note the parallel empowerment formula in Matt. 28:20, ‘I am with you always’). The Twelve are commissioned as the representative bridgehead of the new humanity, the new Israel. Pentecost shows this bridgehead expanding further with a greater outpouring of the Spirit.

Time had fully come - Luke Jesus set his face like flint to Jerusalem, Luke 9:51, Gal 4:4 sent forth his Son… not just arrived, but FULLNESS OF THIS TIME, not just chronological.. BUT kairos… HINGE PASSAGE… moves us from Creation - God dwells with us,… whole OT not but by ritual cleanness… tempotrary Spirit for specfic tasks, INcarnation - Son of God for first time dwells in our humananture in virgin mary, and so too now - preganant moement when Holy Spirit - dwell not just with but in the people of Go don earth...
Key = made witness - first sense they are dead now eye witnesses, but second sense what Resurrected Christ means - now Church in worship, preaching, CONFESSION does to world!
Christianity not just something that you try on and take up, it is somnething that happens to you … when Holy Spirit stirs, oepns, converts, first thing - flood light …

Peter and early Church now seeing whole earthly minstiry of Jesus and especially His death in brand new way - CONTRAST NOT DRUNKEN BABBLERS - no determined counsel of God - this is what the greatest denier of Christ’s death - 50 days later -great risk of his life - huge crowd, humble Galilean fisher man stands up - CRYSTAL CLEAR LOGIC OF GOD< LOGIC OF SCRIPTURE = AND BIGGEST DEAL BY HISLIFE AND DEATH, NOW they also understood that in his resurrection Jesus had been appointed Lord and Christ, Leader and Judge! = Matthias chosen as wtiness to this Acts 1:22, but look all 120 indwlet by Spiriit in way only Apostles at Resurrectino but whole wchurch now and Peter says: Acts 2:32
beginning from the baptism of John until the day when he was taken up from us—one of these men must become with us a witness to his resurrection.”
This Jesus God raised up, and of that we all are witnesses.
Repeatedly promised in OT, and by Jesus to disciples: Not only would the Spirit of the Lord in all his fullness rest upon the Servant of the Lord (Isa. 11:2), but in the last days he would also be poured out upon all flesh, upon sons and daughters, the aged and the young, male and female slaves (Isa. 44:3; Ezek. 39:29; Joel 2:28ff.). John the Baptist, taking over this promise, said of the Messiah that he would baptize, not like himself with water, but with the Holy Spirit and with fire, the purifying and consuming fire of the Holy Spirit (Matt. 3:11; Luke 3:16; cf. Acts 2:3; 18:25; Rom. 12:11; 1 Thess. 5:19).
Special role in world - convince world of sin righteousness and judgment according to Christ not world;
Special role in church: Spirit of love and of power - fullness accompanied in this stage with WONDERS = early period in numerous extraordinary signs of power. In the nomistic Judaism of that time, we rarely find any references to the Holy Spirit. God has become a God from afar and no longer dwells with his Spirit in the hearts of humans. But with John the Baptist and subsequently especially with the appearance of Christ, a new era was ushered in. The Spirit who descended on him was a Spirit of love and of power, and that is how he also became manifest in the church after the day of Pentecost. As a rule the Spirit was granted after someone had come to faith, sometimes at the time of baptism (Acts 2:38), or at the laying on of hands before the baptism (Acts 9:17), or at the laying on of hands after the baptism (Acts 8:17; 19:6), usually bringing along a special gift as well as power. We read, for example, that by the Spirit the disciples were given “boldness” in speaking the word (Acts 4:8, 31), an unusual measure of faith (6:5; 11:24), comfort and joy (9:31; 13:52), wisdom (6:3, 10), glossolalia (10:46; 15:8; 19:6), prophecy (11:28; 20:23; 21:11), appearances and revelations (7:55; 8:39; 10:19; 13:2; 15:28; 16:6; 20:22), miraculous healings (3:6; 5:12, 15–16; 8:7, 13). As did the works Jesus performed, so also these extraordinary feats of power manifested in the church provoked fear and amazement (2:7, 37, 43; 3:10; 4:13; 5:5, 11, 13, 24). On the one hand, they nettled the opposition and provoked the hearts of the enemies to hatred and persecution, but, on the other, they also prepared the soil for the reception of the seed of the gospel. In that first period they were necessary to effect in the world acceptance and permanence for the confession of Christ.

And not only Christ but God himself by this Spirit comes to take up residence in them and to fill them with his fullness in order that in the end he may be all in all (John 14:23; 1 Cor. 3:16–17; 6:19; 15:28; 2 Cor. 6:16; Eph. 2:22). By effecting communion with the person of Christ, the Holy Spirit also effects participation in all his benefits, his wisdom (1 Cor. 2:6–10), righteousness (1 Cor. 6:11), holiness (1 Cor. 6:11; Rom. 15:16; 2 Thess. 2:13), redemption (Rom. 8:2, 23).
Q. How could this have been done better than by letting this just-established, small world church proclaim in many languages the mighty works of God
indwell church for worldwide mission in a way only indwelt temple in Israel… At the creation the morning stars sang, and all the children of God shouted with joy. At the birth of Christ a multitude of heavenly hosts raised a song of jubilation to God’s good pleasure. On the birthday of the church, the church itself acclaims in many languages the great works of God.
