Who Jesus is?
Colossians 1:15–20 NIV
The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
this is what we believe
he is the Son of God v15
he died for our sins v20
he has created all things and all things are under his authority and power v16
this is our challenge
do we know Jesus just in our mind?
do we just feel Jesus?
have we put Jesus into our whole being?
do we recognize the practical and experiential reality of living in Christ?
today want to discuss the high five of Jesus
this gives us the impetus to magnify our response to him
maybe even change that response
Jesus who saves
Romans 5:10 NIV
For if, while we were God’s enemies, we were reconciled to him through the death of his Son, how much more, having been reconciled, shall we be saved through his life!
the beginning truth - we were God’s enemies
before Christ we are disobedient, we do not acknowledge him as creator or God in any way
we are dead, that is, there is no life outside of Christ
the everlasting truth - we are reconciled by Jesus
we are now saved and life eternal is ours
it is the life we live in Christ that gives us life eternal
Jesus who sanctifies
Romans 6:22–23 NIV
But now that you have been set free from sin and have become slaves of God, the benefit you reap leads to holiness, and the result is eternal life. For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
this new life is free from sin
we have become slaves of God - we are subject to his rule over us
the world sees slavery as bondage
slaves to God brings freedom, complete and utter freedom
if we are in Christ we are free, free indeed
we are free because death is no longer part of the equation
it is a gift, freely given because Jesus willingly died
let us not neglect or tarnished this wonderful freedom
let us live a holy and sanctified life
let every word and every deed glorify our Lord Jesus
Jesus who heals
Acts 3:16 NIV
By faith in the name of Jesus, this man whom you see and know was made strong. It is Jesus’ name and the faith that comes through him that has completely healed him, as you can all see.
there are three points to make here, three massive points
it is the name of Jesus that has healing power
it is faith in the name of Jesus that releases that healing
the power of Jesus brings complete healing
we expect healing through Jesus, with our faith in him for wholeness of the person
Jesus who empowers - baptize in the HS
Luke 24:49 NIV
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high.”
Jesus promised to send the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of power
we have this great gift to follow our new life and freedom
we have the full power of the Godhead within us
Jesus himself gives us what no other god can do
he gives us unlimited unfettered spiritual power
all others rely on human strength and power, yet Jesus gives us his power
2 Timothy 1:7 NIV
For the Spirit God gave us does not make us timid, but gives us power, love and self-discipline.
this power is not just power
it is the power of sacrificial love that will directed toward others
it is the power of self-discipline where we can overcome and destroy the sinful nature and forces that beset us
so do not be timid about this power
lock into this power and use it for the benefit of the Kingdom
Jesus who now comes as King
1 Timothy 6:14–15 NIV
to keep this command without spot or blame until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ, which God will bring about in his own time—God, the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords,
Jesus is now king and we await his return
he is coming in the God appointed time
he is already known as King of kings
so we must respect and honour Jesus as king
we must do it now even though he was on this earth as a an
he by his sacrifice and obedience has been made King over all creation
if we believe all these other things about Jesus, then this is the ultimate status of Christ
He is King and we must come before him as such
Jesus - the high five
saves
sanctifies
heals
empowers
regal as King
