Acts 2:1- 21
Pentecost, What is it and Why do we celebrate it and what do we learn from it?
Those are the three questions that we are going to answer.
What is Pentecost? Lets get interactive. Throw your answers in the chat.
Pentecost is the day that Jesus had told the disciples about. He said to wait in Jerusalem until the Holy Spirit would come. The disciples waited and then this is what we are told.
Read Acts 2:1-21
look at the words in the chat.
The meaning of the word Pentacost- is the Festival of the Weeks.
The Festival of Weeks takes place during the 50 days after the Festival of Unleaven Bread or Passover. The Sunday after the Passover, this day was a day dedicated to bringing in the first fruits to the Lord from the barley harvest. Before the Passover they had to get rid of all bread, anything that contained yeast. Before they can make another loaf of bread from the new harvest they had to tak the first sheaf of the barley harvest before the Lord in the temple. How did they know it was the first one? As the farmer would walk through the field the first peice of barley was marked in some way for the farmer to know which of the first fruits to offer to the Lord.
On the Sunday following the Passover that first sheaf of barly is offered to the Lord. It was a declaration of thankfulness to God by offer the first and finest part of the harvest. Once this is done, fifty days later, they would return with an offering of two loaves of bread made with the barley and also they were to present other offerings of first fruits at this time.
It is interesting that God would have them wait for 50 days. This is very significant because it was at that very first Passover when the Lord saved the Isralites and then it was 50 days later that God gave Moses the Law. Scripture tells us that God in the Psalm, I will write my laws on their hearts, there is a promise of an indwelling. The Jewish Festival of Weeks- represents first fruit.
From the passage I read, We can see that the day of Pentacost is a lot more involved then only recieving the Holy Spirit, It is also the day of first fruits after the asscention of Jesus. Over 3000 people were baptized that day.
So this is what Pentacost is, So why should we celebrate it? The answer is quite simple, we should celebrate because it reminds of God's faithfulness that He will do what He says He will do. We celebrate the things that have great impact on our lives, weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, little mile stones on the journey and they become like markers on the way of our journey.
I was sharing with some one this week, lets write this down and remember in the times of doubt or uncertaintity what God is doing. It is these mile markers in our lives that we should celebrate. The day of Pentecost is no different. We need to celebrate the day the Holy Spirit came to dwell among us and gave birth to the church.
share about taking Shay to see a counsellor and I shared with him that it took me a bit to remember how to speak Shaylea. This is the third thing I want us to look at today, When the Holy Spirit dwells within, He gives us the insight to understand others that maybe we wouldn't nessacrarly understand. He calls us to live in community and then he gives us the ability to understand those around us when we look through His lense. He gives us a place to belong. A place to be loved and cared for in such unique ways. Ways that are best for us, even when we don't think their best.
God brings the people together that he wants to be together and then gives them the ability to love and understand others.
We all need community, a place to belong. Where is your community? Who is your community? If you do not have a community, then I want to invite you to be part of ours. We are perfectly imperfect people who love the Lord and want to follow after all that he has for us.
