However, when you are at the beginning of anything, you can find yourself experiencing fear, uncertainty, and the burden of the work you are about to embark on. That’s what it was like when we started FBA.I remember when the idea for the Academy first came up. We were in that kitchen back there and to keep it as short as I can I’ll just say, Pastor said “I wonder how difficult it would be to open a school in Arizona?” That was in February of 2016 and by August of that same year, we opened the doors to Freedom Baptist Academy.Mrs. Melissa did a lot of the leg work in those early days and served as the lead person there for its first few years. She felt most of what I just mentioned. I remember the meetings we had in, what at that time was to be known as our Youth building, and discussing shirts, dress code (like shirts tucked in and belts), price, room set up, fire codes, and so on and so forth. These young men were starting 8th grade a that point. But that’s not when I first met them. That was back in 2013. When I was just coming back to my faith and pastor gave Sarah and I the opportunity to teach on Wednesday nights and in Junior Church. It was during this time, this photo was taken.Great memories. Now, for you graduates, High school is just that…a memory. Memories are great to look back on and laugh, cry, and find enjoyment thinking about how God has provided for you, enabled you, and protected you. But memories are not where we live. We live in the moment and look toward the future. In this moment you are at the beginning of your adult life. The beginning can be exciting but it is also those things I mentioned a moment ago: Filled with uncertainty, fear, and seeing the work that is ahead of you.Tonight, as I take the next few moments to deliver this charge to you I want you to know that my challenge to you in this moment, as you look toward the future is three fold: Over the years I got to see Jackson and Jacob grow and keep up with Brandon through his parents and social media.Throughout this time and especially now it is evident that God has been at work in their lives. While completing High school is a great accomplishment, the greatest decision each of you boys have made was not to get the homework done, it was your decision to trust in Jesus as your Savior. In doing so I believe you, and all other believers, find themselves propelled into a position of leadership in the world. Leaders are known for having a vision, leaders are known for setting the example, and leaders are known for having an impact. Christians should be known for the same.At this integral juncture you have the opportunity to decide how you will live your life. You are at the beginning of this race we call life and as you begin to get set and launch off the starting blocks into the world, I challenge you to purpose in your hearts to live for significance, not success. As believers in Christ, It is my belief that all of us who profess faith in Christ are called to be leaders in some way. We are called to set an example for the world to see Jesus through us. We are called to communicate the gospel to those around us. We are called to not only accomplish a great commission but to raise up other disciples to do the same.
John Maxwell a leadership expert said “A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.”
I agree with him. You know who else I agree with? The one who said
John 14:6 KJV 19006 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
John 14:6 KJV 19006 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
As young men entering the world where you should no longer be under the responsiblity of your parents, you will need to determine on your own the path you will follow. As young men who trust in Christ, I challenge you to be leaders in your spheres of influence.Be a leader who knows the way. Know Jesus intimately. You’ve trusted Him as your savior, now trust Him with your life.
2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 19007 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
2 Corinthians 5:7 KJV 19007 (For we walk by faith, not by sight:)
Walk by faith. Live your life taking your next step of faith each day. Growing in your love and understanding of who God is and what Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection means to and for you.You cannot lead others if you have no direction or vision for yourself. For years as children and teenagers you were asked the question “What do you want to be when you grow up?”I’m sure your answers varied…but now I challenge you with a different question ‘Who does God want you to be now that you are grown up?”Know Jesus and the way God would have you to travel through this life. The road of faith is one that is not always straight or clear cut. At times there may be obstacles or a change in direction. Do not shy from them. Embrace them. Accept the challenges and changes that can come.God knows now the challenges you will face as you follow Him by faith and you can know now and when they come, He will get you through the difficulties. Knowing Jesus is knowing that He will take care of you.Knowing Jesus means knowing you don’t know everything. Embrace learning. Become a sponge to good influences. Choose wisely who you surround yourself with. Don’t just learn from books, learn from people. Pastor has always said there is more caught than taught. Choose who wisely who you play catch with.Know the Way. Then Go the way.Go after Jesus with all of your heart. Don’t allow anyone to deter you.
