High Priestly Prayer - Prayers for Himself, Prayers for His Disciples, Prayers for All Believers, Prayer for Unity

Notes
Transcript

The High Priestly Prayer, most scholars think that Jesus was praying this prayer either in the Upper Room or on the way to the Garden of Gethsemane. Let’s quickly review what has come before this prayer - leading up to the WWJP - WHAT WOULD JESUS PRAY?

John 13:1-20 is Jesus Washing the Disciples Feet, a demonstration of His servant leadership, SHOWING Us clearly how we ought to lead!

John 13:21-27 is a reminder that Judas Iscariot was there as well. Jesus washed his feet also! Knowing all the while that Judas was going to betray Him. BUT Jesus put it in perspective, in v. 31, It is for the Glory of God! Even sinful men’s sinful choices, God can and does use for HIS GLORY!! Not all things in this world are good, but God is good and He uses all things for the good of those who love Him.

John 14 is reminder that even though we will face trouble and anxiety, but the Holy Spirit is our ally and there is a place of rest in heaven for those that truly know Him by Grace through Faith. The Spirit works to convict the world of sin and guilt and to guide believers in the TRUTH!! JOHN 15 is the VINE AND THE BRANCHES! He is our Life and we draw strength and vitality from HIM!! We cannot function as believers in this lost world without HIM and THE POWER and LIFE that comes from ABIDING in JESUS!! JOHN 16 is a warning that there will be trouble in this life for believers —> and once again the PROMISE of the SPIRIT’s power in our lives as we minister and live for Jesus. Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection - He knew it, and leaned into it BECAUSE THAT’S WHY HE CAME!

John 17 is the continuation of Jesus’ prayer,

WWJP?! He would Pray:

For Confidence In The Father’s Plan

From the human point of view, Calvary was a revolting display of man’s sin; but from the divine point of view, the cross revealed and magnified the grace and glory of God.

The Hour has come
Glorify (5x) verses 1 (2x), 4, 5, 10
Wiersbe - BEC “From the human point of view, Calvary was a revolting display of man’s sin; but from the divine point of view, the cross revealed and magnified the grace and glory of God.”
Glorify Your Son
that He Might Glorify You
v. 10 That the disciples (and we) might bring glory to Him...
May I glorify you with my life!
Jesus anticipated His return to heaven when He said, “I have finished the work which Thou gavest Me to do” (John 17:4).
This “work” included:
His messages and miracles on earth (John 5:17–19),
the training of the disciples for future service,
and most of all, His sacrifice on the cross (Heb. 9:24–28; 10:11–18).

Confirmation of the TRUTH!!

to disciples

to the world

See the tension of Truth? v. 13-21

We are in the world, but we are NOT of the world.

We MUST KNOW THE TRUTH, because the TRUTH Sets Us Free!

With Freedom there is a JOY, a lasting happiness.

** I overheard a woman talking the other day about a hairstyle. I don’t rememeber all they said, but there was this, “I love it, it is COMPLETE FREEDOM.” I remember thinking to myself, that’s a bit of an exaggeration…but

There is a joy to be found in the Word of God, in knowing Jesus but there is also a temptation to give ourselves to the world, and lose the true JOY that comes from knowing Him and His Word.

Wiersbe - BEC John 17
“How does the Word of God enable us to overcome the world?
To begin with, it gives us joy (John 17:13); and this inward joy gives us the strength to overcome (Neh. 8:10).
We commonly think of Jesus Christ as “a man of sorrows” (Isa. 53:3), and indeed He was; but He was also a person of deep abiding joy. John 17:13 is the very heart of this prayer, and its theme is joy!
Jesus had referred to His joy already (John 15:11) and had explained that joy comes by transformation and not substitution (John 16:20–22).
Joy also comes from answered prayer (John 16:23–24). Now He made it clear that joy comes from the Word also.
The believer does not find his joy in the world but in the Word. Like John the Baptist, we should rejoice greatly when we hear the Bridegroom’s voice! (John 3:29)
We must never picture Jesus going around with a long face and a melancholy disposition.”
