The Power of the Holy Spirit

Notes
Transcript
Romans 8:11 ESV
If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.

We are a Foursquare church! What does that mean?

Jesus Christ Savior

Jesus Christ Healer

Jesus Christ is Baptiser in the Holy Spirit

Jesus Christ is the soon coming King

Acts 2:1–4 ESV
When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit gave them utterance.

As a Foursquare Church, we hold the position, supported by Scripture, that the Holy Spirit’s presence and power are for every believer today and until Jesus returns.

Everyone at FWC is encouraged to seek the power, presence and gifts of the Holy Spirit for themselves in a manner they are comfortable with. No one will ever be forced to receive the Holy Spirit or any of His gifts. No one will be ridiculed if they don’t.

Luke 11:13 ESV
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

Questions and Concerns

Who is eligible

Luke 11:13 ESV
If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him!”

A 2nd work of Grace

John 1:32–33 ESV
And John bore witness: “I saw the Spirit descend from heaven like a dove, and it remained on him. I myself did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, ‘He on whom you see the Spirit descend and remain, this is he who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’

Misunderstandings

Demonstrations

1 Corinthians 12:4–11 ESV
Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord; and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone. To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.

Tongues

Corporate worship

1 Corinthians 14:1–4 ESV
Pursue love, and earnestly desire the spiritual gifts, especially that you may prophesy. For one who speaks in a tongue speaks not to men but to God; for no one understands him, but he utters mysteries in the Spirit. On the other hand, the one who prophesies speaks to people for their upbuilding and encouragement and consolation. The one who speaks in a tongue builds up himself, but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

Personal edification and prayer

Jude 20 ESV
But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are divided into three categories in 1 Corinthians 12:7-11.

* Vocal Gifts—tongues, prophecy and the interpretation of tongues * Knowledge Gifts—word of knowledge, word of wisdom and the discerning of spirits * Power Gifts—healing, faith and miracles
