"How are we to live out our faith when we are surrounded by a faithless world?"

Introduction

Samuel Clemens, more commonly known by his pen name, Mark Twain was a gifted writer. Yet Twain held a deep contempt for Christianity. He once referred to it as a “slaughterhouse religion” because of the doctrine of the blood atonement, and he often turned his ridicule on those who believed the Bible. He met and fell in love with Olivia Langdon, a young woman from a good Christian family. While they were courting he appeared to have downplayed his lack of faith, and she agreed to marry him.
After their marriage, Twain began to openly mock Christianity once again, and before too much time passed, Olivia stopped attending church. Twain and his family suffered many great reversals, including a complete financial collapse and the death of a beloved daughter. At one point Twain attempting to comfort his grieving wife said, “Livy, if it comforts you to lean on your faith, do so.” She replied sadly, “I cannot. I do not have any faith left.”
The people we spend most of our time with, and cultural influences such as books, music, social media, and television that we allow into our hearts and minds have a dramatic influence on us. This is why Solomon warned of the dangers of wanting to spend time with those who are evil.
Proverbs 24:1–2 CSB
Don’t envy the evil or desire to be with them, for their hearts plan violence, and their words stir up trouble.
In our culture today, there are many, like Mark Twain, that mock the Christian faith. The question you may ask yourself from time to time, how are we to engage with those who don’t believe? Should we only have Christian friends? Should our fun only be found in church activities? Can I dress and act based on what the world says? While it is easy to get focused on a list of Do’s and Don’ts, let’s go to God’s Word to see how some of the other believers modeled their faith journey in an unbelieving culture.

A Warning About The World:
1 John 2:15–17 CSB
Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For everything in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride in one’s possessions—is not from the Father, but is from the world. And the world with its lust is passing away, but the one who does the will of God remains forever.
Does this mean I can’t enjoy the food for this weekend?
Matthew 4:1–11 CSB
Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was hungry. Then the tempter approached him and said, “If you are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.” He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God. Then the devil took him to the holy city, had him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to him, “If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down. For it is written: He will give his angels orders concerning you, and they will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone. Jesus told him, “It is also written: Do not test the Lord your God. Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he said to him, “I will give you all these things if you will fall down and worship me.” Then Jesus told him, “Go away, Satan! For it is written: Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him. Then the devil left him, and angels came and began to serve him.
Should We Remove Ourselves From Culture?
1 Corinthians 9:19–23 CSB
Although I am free from all and not anyone’s slave, I have made myself a slave to everyone, in order to win more people. To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win Jews; to those under the law, like one under the law—though I myself am not under the law—to win those under the law. To those who are without the law, like one without the law—though I am not without God’s law but under the law of Christ—to win those without the law. To the weak I became weak, in order to win the weak. I have become all things to all people, so that I may by every possible means save some. Now I do all this because of the gospel, so that I may share in the blessings.
“We live in the world but not of the world.”
There are things that Paul did with the culture, but there are things he didn’t participate with as well.
1 Corinthians 10:23–33 CSB
“Everything is permissible,” but not everything is beneficial. “Everything is permissible,” but not everything builds up. No one is to seek his own good, but the good of the other person. Eat everything that is sold in the meat market, without raising questions for the sake of conscience, since the earth is the Lord’s, and all that is in it. If any of the unbelievers invites you over and you want to go, eat everything that is set before you, without raising questions for the sake of conscience. But if someone says to you, “This is food from a sacrifice,” do not eat it, out of consideration for the one who told you, and for the sake of conscience. I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person’s. For why is my freedom judged by another person’s conscience? If I partake with thanksgiving, why am I criticized because of something for which I give thanks? So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God. Give no offense to Jews or Greeks or the church of God, just as I also try to please everyone in everything, not seeking my own benefit, but the benefit of many, so that they may be saved.

“In The World vs. Of The World Debate.”

1.) Should a Christ-Follower go to a concert where they know they’ll encounter excessive drinking, drugs, etc.
2.) Should a Christ-follower attend prom?
3.) Should a Christ-follower watch a well-made and well-acted movie or television show that has rated “R” content.
4.) Should a Christ-follower smoke e-cigarettes with friends?
5.) Should a Christ-follower date a non-believer?
