John 16:4-15

This morning I'll be reading John chapter 16 verses 4 through 15.
And I'll be reading from the Holman Christian Standard Bible.
John 16:4-15
In these verses,,, Jesus is warning the disciples again that He will be going away. Later they would remember His words,,, and it would help them to understand that it was part of His plan all along.
John 16:4-15
4 But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you may remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you. 5 “But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you. 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged. 12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come. 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.
God bless the reading and the hearing of your word this morning.
Let us pray:
Dear Lord,,, as we begin this morning,,, with everyone here today and all that are listening and watching by video,,, we ask that you open our ears to hear and our hearts and minds to receive the message that you have for us today,,, In Jesus' name I pray,,, Amen.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Last Sunday,,, we learned from the church in Ephesus that when we do the things that Jesus has taught us to do,,, our efforts will be noticed.
We also know that if we aren't doing the things that Jesus taught us,,, it will hurt us as a church and hurt our chances of helping others to see how much God could help them in their own life.
Since today is Pentecost Sunday,,, and the Holy Spirit is so important to our daily walk with God,,, it is very important that we look at the Holy Spirit that Jesus promised the disciples was coming after He left them.
So let’s look at these verses and see how they will help us in our walk with God this week.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 4 says: 4 But I have told you these things so that when their time comes you may remember I told them to you. I didn’t tell you these things from the beginning, because I was with you.
Jesus is warning the disciples in advance so that they would not be moved by things that would happen.
Over and over Jesus has warned them so that they would know that these were a part of His plan.
Even though He knew that they wouldn’t remember them as they were happening,,, Jesus knew that they would remember later and this memory would strengthen their faith.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 5 and 6 say: 5 “But now I am going away to Him who sent Me, and not one of you asks Me, ‘Where are You going?’ 6 Yet, because I have spoken these things to you, sorrow has filled your heart.
The disciples are more concerned with there own feelings than what Jesus is talking about to truly understand.
In the previous verses,,, Jesus has been talking and trying to help them see what is going to happen but they are feeling sad because of the things that Jesus has said.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verse 7 says: 7 Nevertheless, I am telling you the truth. It is for your benefit that I go away, because if I don’t go away the Counselor will not come to you. If I go, I will send Him to you.
Jesus must fulfill the plan that God has in place.
The death,,, burial,,, resurrection,,, and ascension,,, of Jesus are necessary for the atonement of sin.
Without them,,, we have no gospel,,, without them,,, we would not be saved,,, and without them,,, we would not be able to have the personal relationship that we enjoy with our Savior today!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 8 through 11 say: 8 When He comes, He will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment: 9 About sin, because they do not believe in Me; 10 about righteousness, because I am going to the Father and you will no longer see Me; 11 and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.
We have the Holy Spirit that works in all of us,,, even before we accept Jesus Christ,,, in what John Wesley called “Prevenient Grace”,,, to make us aware that what we are doing is wrong,,, and we need Jesus in our life.
We also have the Holy Spirit continuing to guide us after we accept Jesus Christ as our Savior,,, which is what John Wesley called "Sanctifying Grace".
This is all of the things that we do that strengthen our relationship with God as we continue our journey here on earth.
And sin,,, is rebellion against God.
And today the greatest sin,,, is the failure to believe in Jesus Christ.
One of my commentaries says that most people will not admit to being guilty of sin,,, instead they want to admit to failures,,, or vices,,, or,,, even crimes.
It says that they do this,,, because,,, to admit to sin,,, is to admit there is a God,,, and that is something that they just can not bring themselves to do.
It also says that in crucifying Jesus,,, the Jewish leaders thought that they had crucified an unrighteous person,,, but the resurrection and ascension proved that Jesus was God’s righteous servant,,, and the Holy Spirit convicts men of their faulty views about Jesus when the gospel with its stress on the resurrection is proclaimed.
Then concerning judgement,,, when Jesus Christ rose after death on the cross and is now seated at the right hand of God,,, satan was defeated,,, even though he’s still active today,,, but like a condemned criminal on death row,,, his execution is waiting!
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 12 and 13 say: 12 “I still have many things to tell you, but you can’t bear them now. 13 When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all the truth. For He will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears. He will also declare to you what is to come.
Jesus knew that it wouldn’t do any good to tell the disciples anything else because they have heard all that they can stand at this point.
Right now,,, their minds are still stuck in this world,,, they can’t believe that Jesus is talking about death,,, when they were convinced that He was the promised Messiah from the scriptures that they have heard about all their life.
They will be guided by the Holy Spirit when He comes,,, and then they will truly begin to understand all of the things that Jesus tries to tell them now.
Jesus also says that the Spirit,,, will not speak on His own, but He will speak whatever He hears.
This refers to the interdependence of the Persons in the Trinity.
The Father would tell the Spirit what to teach the disciples about the Son.
Also,,, the Spirit would teach,,, what is to come.
This statement helps us to understand the promise made earlier,,, He will guide you into all the truth.
This was a promise to the disciples that their partial understanding of Jesus as the Messiah would be fully understood when the Holy Spirit helped them to understand all of the coming events that Jesus has been talking about.
The New Testament books are the fulfillment of this teaching ministry of the Spirit.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Verses 14 and 15 say: 14 He will glorify Me, because He will take from what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 Everything the Father has is Mine. This is why I told you that He takes from what is Mine and will declare it to you.
Because Jesus is the “word”,,, the revelation of the Father,,, or as Paul said in Colossians 1:15 - 15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation.
All that belongs to the Father is also the Son’s.
So,,, the Spirit of Truth brought glory to Jesus as He revealed to the disciples the meanings about everything that Jesus has been trying to teach them.
-----------------------------------------------------------
So as we finish with these verses this morning,,, on Pentecost Sunday,,, I hope that each of you truly understand what it means for us today,,, that Jesus left and sent the Holy Spirit to help the disciples,,, and of course,,, us today as well.
Living a life that is pleasing to God,,, without the help of the Holy Spirit helping us is impossible,,, as the Israelites found out when they tried to live by the laws of Moses.
And,,, we might be able to live right for a little while on our own strength,,, but we will always mess up,,, and that’s all it takes,,, is one mistake without Jesus as our Savior.
But thankfully,,, God knew this,,, and had this plan in place to save us from our sins,,, and allow us the chance to live in eternity,,, with Him,,, in heaven,,, forever!
