I. Jesus Rejected vs. 1-6
I. Jesus Rejected vs. 1-6
A. The last time Jesus was in His hometown, they tried to kill Him.
And all the people in the synagogue were filled with rage as they heard these things;
and they got up and drove Him out of the city, and led Him to the brow of the hill on which their city had been built, in order to throw Him down the cliff.
But passing through their midst, He went His way.
B. Jesus visited home, consider that His half-brother and mother thought He was crazy, it should have been an interesting visit.
C. Jesus did the traditional thing and taught first in the synagogue, so as not to upset anyone. You can “play by the rules” but the message will always offend.
D. People rarely honor the hard preachers in their lifetime it is usually after they have died that they are honored.
E. Your family is the worst, because they remember who you use to be (That really doesn’t apply to Jesus!)
F. For them to say that Jesus was Mary’s son was to call Mary a harlot and Jesus illegitimate. This was a great insult to Jesus and Yahweh.
G. Jesus wondered, or marveled at their unbelief. Basically, Jesus was surprised by their unbelief. Why? Could it be that we become so familiar with Jesus that we become too familiar with Jesus? Meaning, the Nazarenes “knew” Jesus (they knew who they thought Him to be), but didn’t really “know” Jesus. Much like us, we know a Jesus, that we think is nice, but do not know the real Jesus, as our Saviour and Lord!
H. Jesus healed a few people, but didn’t do any other miracles, because of their unbelief. When we don’t believe God to work, then He won’t.
And let endurance have its perfect result, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all generously and without reproach, and it will be given to him.
But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind.
For that man ought not to expect that he will receive anything from the Lord,
being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
I. Jesus would not perform miracles, because of their unbelief.
“Unbelief freezes the exercise of God’s power.... Unbelief robs the church of it’s power” -R. Kent Hughes
And He did not do many miracles there because of their unbelief.
And without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who seek Him.
J. Jesus taught those who would listen, in the surrounding villages. This would have been a mixture of people who knew Jesus well, knew of Him, or only heard of Him, much like the world around us.
II. The Disciples Sent Out vs. 7-13
II. The Disciples Sent Out vs. 7-13
A. Jesus sends the disciples out, so that they will learn what they will do. In those days a Rabbi with authority would send out their disciples two by two, and it was like they were the Rabbi’s representatives. We are Christ’s ambassadors.
Therefore, we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God were making an appeal through us; we beg you on behalf of Christ, be reconciled to God.
B. In rabbinic law a man put off his staff, shoes, and money girdle, when entering the temple. The lack of provision shows that ministry is sacred no matter where it takes place.
C. God always richly provides. Sometimes when you have no provisions, God works all the more to show that He is our provision and provider.
Your creatures settled in it;
You provided in Your goodness for the poor, O God.
And my God will supply all your needs according to His riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
D. You are not responsible for people’s reactions, only the message itself. If people respond positively, then praise God. If they respond negatively, dust your feet off, that is pronounced judgment.
E. Even Judas preached, cast out demons, and healed people. When we believe God is going to do something, the lost that are demonically deceived into thinking they are saved, will go right along with us, until whatever they hold dear is threatened and they come after you guns blazing!
